Mike did a great job. I had ten unrelated jobs that had to be completed — a punch list of sorts. It included repairs, electrical, installations etc... I would, and will, hire him in the future for any handyman job. I give him a full endorsement.

Keith was amazing! I entered the request for work needed on Monday. On Tuesday he gave me a bid. On Wednesday he began and completed the work, all right at what he said it would cost and even did a couple of small things at no charge. He did exactly what I needed, responding very quickly to my job needs. I will definitely hire him again when I need handyman work done. Thank you Keith!

We had a sprinkler main pipe leakage. Darrell came to rescue on Mother's day Sunday. It took longer than expected for Darrell to finish the repair job. Since the pipes didn't glue together well enough the first time, it leaked again when water was turned back on. It took time to go get parts from Home Depot twice. However, we are happy with the final result. Darrell is a very nice guy to work with.

Not only will i ise Simon again i will not hesitate to refer anybody to him.

Cranston sent out John who was very friendly and knowledgeable. When the wrong door was pulled by the home improvement store , John immediately went and had the company exchange for the correct door. I will be using Cranston again for our up coming projects.

Todd is extremely responsive and will make sure the job gets done well! When I requested a handyman, I received 2 quotes, 1 from Todd and another from a "Top Pro". The Top Pro was extremely unresponsive and very unprofessional. Todd should be considered a Top Pro because he responded back right away, was always on time, and did the job quickly and better than any handyman in the area. I highly recommend Todd for any handyman projects you need done! Thanks Todd!

Val did a great job finding the problem with our low water pressure. Where other companies wanted to just jump in and re-pipe the whole house, Val started at the beginning, ran some pressure checks, found that we had significant pressure, just no flow. So he focused on the pressure reducing valve, which was more than likely as old as the house. He replaced the PRV and tested the fittings with no leaks. He replaced the old galvanized pipe that came in from the foundation up to the shut off valve, by the way, replaced that too, with new PEX tubing. So to see if this was really going to help, we turned on the upstairs bath, three sinks, and the shower, and flushed a toilet with water still flowing at a second sink. I couldn't say when the last time I saw that happen in our house. It used to be flush a toilet and there wasn't enough pressure to wet a toothbrush in a sink. So very happy with the actual work that was done by Val. There's a couple of reasons I didn't give five stars because of one, at 4:00pm the promised time he would be at the house, I got a text saying he would be leaving West Jordan in an hour, I live in Ogden. So I knew it would be at least two hours past 4:00 pm. Secondly, after I noticed Val's car in my driveway, I waited and waited for him to come to the door. After about forty minutes, I went out to his car to see if things were ok. He said he was rearranging his trunk. His tools were spread out all over my driveway. I really hope there isn't an hourly charge on my invoice or I may have a little gripe about that. Oh, wait I haven't received an itemized invoice as of yet. Lastly, he didn't come prepared with all of the supplies to finish the job, he had to run to Home Depot to pick up some crimpers for the PEX line because he didn't have copper to use. All in all Val did do a great job! I know word of mouth is how these guys make their money. I would definitely recommend Valerian Stock for your handyman needs

Justin put a shelf in our daughter's closet. It is so sturdy and he did it exactly how we wanted it! He also installed a railing for us. It previously was very rickety and dangerous and it is now very sturdy and safe! Very happy with his work and we actually are having him come back to install a shelf in another closet! He is definitely our go-to handyman now!

Scott built a fence with a double wide gate around my front yard which required him to level it on a grade and add topsoil. My neighbors are happy with this improvement and tell me it makes my house look nicer. Scott also did some welding adding a double-sided keyed lock to a kennel door, very nice. He later added electrical outlets with a GIF inside the kennel. He is a great handyman for any project of any size.

Stefan was a great choice for what we needed by far! He was on time and brought everything for the job and more. We needed our king size (IKEA) bed frame disassembled, moved to a new location and reassembled , while disassembling we found there were some things that were broken prior to him coming and he happily found ways to strengthen and repair our bed, assembling it better than it was before. He did all this in a very short amount of time and at a great price at that! I will definitely be calling Stefan for any needed handyman work. Great service!

In an attempt to open up a beauty salon, I acquired services from Mr. Anthony Bivens. As both time and money were issues in my new business venture, Anthony came highly recommended. Services rendered included, but were not limited too the complete install of a water heater, revamp of HVAC, the plumbing and install as it relates to a bathroom sink and utility sink, two (2) shampoo bowls, and ventilating doors, etc. As I hired Anthony for services directly related to "Plumbing, Heating and Air," I have to admit that I became uneasy when he advised that he was also comfortable with areas surrounding electricity. With that said, Anthony also installed a minimum of seven (7) lighting fixtures. It is important to note that my "Master Electrician" wanted in excess of $400 to just "install" these fixtures at his own convenience. Not only did Anthony install timely, but charged me a fraction of the cost. Needless to say, Anthony saved me a great deal of money during this project as the term "HandyMan" is an understatement. Finally, as getting the work done is already stressful in itself, Anthony comes with the knowledge, skills, and ability to articulate your problem in a way that you will be able to understand, but more importantly, offer viable solutions without any hidden agenda or desire to upsell. With that, I will only use Mr. Bivens who I deem reliable, timely, and affordable, going forward. I found Mr. Bivens to be a pleasure to work. Do not be fooled by his small stature as his capabilities as it related to my project, were unlimited.. It is important to note that all work was signed off and approved by the City Building Inspectors. Thanks Again Anthony... Design Extensions

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
