Mike did a great job. I had ten unrelated jobs that had to be completed — a punch list of sorts. It included repairs, electrical, installations etc... I would, and will, hire him in the future for any handyman job. I give him a full endorsement.

Nathan did a fantastic job installing three faucets that required a bit more effort than anticipated due to the old plumbing. The results were excellent. He also helped me by installing window blinds in 10 windows - he has good handyman skills in addition to plumbing. I would definitely hire Nathan again.

John Kennedy is a great handyman. He promptly assesed each area needing a repair, asked all the right questions, and cleared the solution with me. I was impressed that he was able to assess, consult, by supplies, and complete all the work the same day. The company is very professional and customer service oriented. I will use them again and again.

Edgar was the first person to reach out to me when I submitted my Thumbtack request. I had a bunch of drywall and paint touchup needed throughout my townhome. He came right out, gave me a written bid, and we scheduled a time for the work to be completed. He and his guys showed up on the morning of the work and ended up doing even more work than he originally agreed to. I recommend Trusted Handyman LLC.

Val did a great job finding the problem with our low water pressure. Where other companies wanted to just jump in and re-pipe the whole house, Val started at the beginning, ran some pressure checks, found that we had significant pressure, just no flow. So he focused on the pressure reducing valve, which was more than likely as old as the house. He replaced the PRV and tested the fittings with no leaks. He replaced the old galvanized pipe that came in from the foundation up to the shut off valve, by the way, replaced that too, with new PEX tubing. So to see if this was really going to help, we turned on the upstairs bath, three sinks, and the shower, and flushed a toilet with water still flowing at a second sink. I couldn't say when the last time I saw that happen in our house. It used to be flush a toilet and there wasn't enough pressure to wet a toothbrush in a sink. So very happy with the actual work that was done by Val. There's a couple of reasons I didn't give five stars because of one, at 4:00pm the promised time he would be at the house, I got a text saying he would be leaving West Jordan in an hour, I live in Ogden. So I knew it would be at least two hours past 4:00 pm. Secondly, after I noticed Val's car in my driveway, I waited and waited for him to come to the door. After about forty minutes, I went out to his car to see if things were ok. He said he was rearranging his trunk. His tools were spread out all over my driveway. I really hope there isn't an hourly charge on my invoice or I may have a little gripe about that. Oh, wait I haven't received an itemized invoice as of yet. Lastly, he didn't come prepared with all of the supplies to finish the job, he had to run to Home Depot to pick up some crimpers for the PEX line because he didn't have copper to use. All in all Val did do a great job! I know word of mouth is how these guys make their money. I would definitely recommend Valerian Stock for your handyman needs

Helio is AMAZING! I hired him to do some electrical work in my family room and he did such an amazing job that I asked him to do some additional electrical work (moving my dryer outlet and wiring some fans). I then found out he did plumbing so I asked him to plumb my master bath for double sinks as it only had one. He just kept doing such epic work and since I was in the middle of a remodel, I'd say, "hey, Helio, can you do this?" And he'd reply, "Yes, of course!" I loved his quality of work and price so I just kept having him do more and more. He ended up doing all my electrical and plumbing and painting my entire house. I gave him a code to my house and he would come and go. He was so respectful of my home, either removing his shoes or wearing booties. He was kind and courteous to my children and husband. He even coordinated with other service providers as they came to the home while I was at the office. Today, as he finished up his month-long projects at my house, I hugged him and told him "this isn't goodbye!" CUZ he's my handyman til the end of time. GOOD DUDE! I'm a huge Helio fan! I attached a pic that shows the fan he installed, the appliances he installed, and the beautiful ceiling, lights, and walls he painted. He rules. Oh and he even hung my big screen TV. He can do anything. I love him and feel like he's family. This review probably sounds too good to be true, but this is just how good Helio is!

DJ was great to work with from start to finish. He viewed our project before he was contracted, offered some options and delivered a very reasonable estimate for the project. He was also punctual and kept to his scheduled dates and times. If we have other projects that need a handyman, DJ will be at the top of the list. Thank you, DJ!

We have worked with Kore Investments for years. They manage hundreds of properties, and somehow are the most organized management company I have found. I highly recommend them to anyone considering them for property management, handyman services, along with any service they provide. Extremely professional, personable and just a "get 'er done" mentality. Try them out & you will not regret it because if an issue arises it will be handled immediately!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
