Audrey P. says, "My parents moved last year. They had a beautiful custom built solid wood butterfly leaf table that the movers damaged. The base of the table was shattered. My parents decided to just replace it and were going to take it to the dump. But I begged them to let me find someone to repair it. They bought themselves a new table and told me they would give me the broken table. I reached out to Luke for the repair. He assured me he could repair the base or if not he could build a new base for the table. He was able to repair it and it is BEAUTIFUL 🤩. You cannot see the damage repaired. I mean if I get down on my hands and knees with my face 5 inches away from the table looking closely I can see fine lines where the wood was shattered but it’s incredible how beautiful it looks. No one would EVER know that it was damaged. The skirt and base were originally painted a cream color and Luke painted it white to match my dining room. The paint job is perfection. He also polished the wood top. I am truly sooooo pleased. This table cost over 2000 dollars originally and I never could have justified spending that kind of money on a table and Luke fixed it for a very reasonable price."See more

Lisa A. says, "TroyDB completely remodeled two of our bathrooms and installed a secondary upstairs laundry. The project involved gutting the bathrooms to the studs, moving a couple of small walls, and some re-plumbing and re-wiring electrical. There were typically two or more people working full days for the entire project timeline, which was about 5 weeks. They also permitted the project and handled all of the paperwork and scheduling with the city. We are very happy with the final outcome! That's not to say there weren't hiccups and miscommunications along the way - that's to be expected in any major reno project. The reason TroyDB gets 5 stars from us is because they handled issues professionally and worked until all details in the project were correct - including one last concern that came up after the project was completed and paid."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

What does a finish carpenter charge per hour?

On average, finish carpenters charge $60 per hour. However, this hourly rate will vary depending on where you live, the scope of the project and other factors. For a more accurate estimate, ask for price quotes from at least three finish carpenters in your area.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.
