Leanne was great with our dog and extremely knowledgeable about his breed, age and behavior. It was great working with her; she's a lot of fun and the dog was always really excited when she arrived for training. Not only did our pup learn a lot, but we learned a lot about him which is great for us. I'd definitely recommend Leanne for anyone looking for a quality trainer who knows her stuff.

I am so unbelievably happy with how Jameson's first ever grooming turned out. I was hesitant to cut his hair initially because I loved his puppy coloring and shaggy look, but it was getting out of hand. I made requests which they matched perfectly & he looks adorable as ever. Jameson struggles when I leave so that was another concern and while he was extremely excited to see me, he was also so happy & content being there because he made friends with another puppy and I could tell the groomers sincerely cared for them. They even mentioned they were singing to him as they groomed him which got him excited. I have scheduled my next grooming for Jameson with them because why go anywhere else and I have already recommended them to my family and coworkers and I just picked him up maybe an hour ago. So thrilled!!!

I highly recommend Innovative K9 Academy for a dog of any age – they are amazing! We recently added Shae, a Havanese puppy, as a new addition to our family. Bringing a 12-week-old puppy into our home has not been the easiest of transitions – we felt like new parents with not much skill or knowledge, which makes potty training and all the other things that require patience more difficult. I began to search for some help online of things we could try, but there were so many variations of what the “right way” was, it became even more frustrating. I then began looking for puppy training classes online and asking other people about their puppy training experiences at local pet stores, etc. No one could give me a great solution – and then I found Innovative K9 online and decided to give the Puppy Group Training Class a shot. I was nervous in the beginning, but left the first class feeling confident we made the right choice. When we were on our way home that day– that feeling was confirmed as we stopped by a PetSmart to pick up some supplies, and there happened to be a puppy class going on. WOW, was there a significant difference we could see just from the moment we were near their small class area where everyone was crammed in. Puppies were barking and going crazy, so much the trainer had to yell so people could hear her – appeared to be complete chaos. Even the staff at the registers in front were complaining about the noise and barking that was coming from the back of the store. In the weeks we have attended Innovative K9 classes, all of the puppies seem relaxed and eager to learn because of the positive attitude and excitement the trainers bring! The week following our first class, Shae was already doing much better with potty training, focus, socialization and has continued to improve – all because we have been given great advice and shown how we could be better puppy parents to help her learn (and help us keep our sanity) in a positive way. We have also had the opportunity to see David and Sean in action working with other dogs who had come to them with behavioral issues, therapy dog in training, and their own competition dogs – displaying their abilities to manage a diversity of training needs. They show great passion and love for what they do, and we will continue to seek guidance from Innovative K9 expertise.

Working with Tiffany was such a breeze. She was very proactive with arranging the initial date to meet me and my pup. The day of our first meeting we so informative and productive. She even saved my pup from another dog who escaped his yard, and gently led that dog back home and shut the gate behind him, ensuring the safety of both that dog and my own! I will highly recommend her training to any dog owner who needs specialized one-on-one training. I can't wait to watch my dog continue to grow throughout this training process. Thank you so much Tiffany😁🐶😁

We just love Julianne and our 4-legged girls love her even more! Julianne takes care of our furry family as if they were her own. She's incredibly responsible, reliable and always sends updates on the crew while we're out of town. We're lucky enough to have found Yes! for pet sitting, while the training results are also amazing. We were out of town for only a few days, upon our return, our girls were well behaved! Amazing. Highly, highly recommend everyone use Yes! Dog Training for all training and pet sitting!!

MVP Dog Training is the best! My 2 year old Border Collie had become very leash aggressive with other dogs and thanks to Alicia, I finally feel like I'm on the right track. I no longer feel like I have to hide Cooper from society because I'm afraid he is going to lose his mind at every little distraction. I will be recommending MVP Dog Training to everyone I know. Her prices were much more competitive than the other quotes I received through Thumbtack, and my experience with Alicia has been amazing. So thankful to have found Alicia and MVP Dog Training!

I love that she offers private lessons in the comfort of your own home at a very affordable price. That's super convenient for me as a pet owner because I don't have to drag my puppy there and back every time he has a training session.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?
