I find myself with a unique perspective as a teacher, as I've had many stages in the development of my craft, and have evolved through many different musical environments and philosophies.
While I began playing music at a the young age of four, I got a late start on my primary instrument, the bass, which I only picked up in high school. I helped start a jazz band while in college that has a clear focus on virtuosity and technical ability, but also continue to play in rock-and-roll projects for "the fun of it". I love to dive into thick music theory topics, but also enjoy just cutting loose and simply playing what comes to mind. My musical journey has not been a direct one, but rather, one filled with diverse projects, a variety of musical training and instruction, and an assortment of goals and inspirations.
This transfers directly to my teaching style in that I don't approach students in one predefined manner. My musical journey has not been one of a single direction or a narrow definition, and neither should yours. I've been the beginner who knew nothing, but also the confident performer in front of a crowd of thousands, and many places in between. Wherever you are in your musical journey, I've likely been there. I always strive to keep my mind open to my past musical experiences, in order to better serve my students. I love that I get to write, practice, and perform music constantly. Hardly a day goes by when I don't have some sort of positive musical experience.
I find great joy in helping others find a similar level of satisfaction that I myself derive from music. It's wonderful to not only aid someone has they develop a new craft, but to also watch the effect that has on them as a person. Music, whether studying, performing, or simply listening to it, has a unique ability to enrich someone's life, and I take great pride in being able to introduce that richness into someone else's world.
