Soon after buying our home we hired Deon to replace the old, seamed gutters and to repair and line our fascia with aluminum. He was great to work with, came out right away to give us a bid and was ready to start work immediately after we contacted him. Our old gutters were full of debris but Deon still managed to keep everything clean throughout the duration of the project. The final result is not only seamless and functional, but beautiful as well!

Extremely impressed with their service. They went above and beyond my expectations. I had them pour a concrete pad for a vehicle. The job was done in a very timely manner, and they were very professional. The concrete looks great! Exactly what I wanted. I will be calling them back again for future home repairs and services.

I had a unique deck project to fit my budget. Scott came out and gave me an upfront bit that he stuck and stuck those numbers through the entire project. He communicated very well and customized the project as our plans changed. I highly recommend working with Scott. The deck looks amazing and thank you for your hard work!

David with Webb Electric did an absolutely amazing job on a full rewire of our house. He replaced all of our old knob and tube wiring with a modern setup. He gave us a very competitive quote and was able to start quickly and work around our schedules. He worked extremely hard to minimize damage to our plaster walls. David even installed some can lights in our bedroom free of charge. We really appreciated that he swept up every day and kept our place clean. During the project he noticed a problem in the wiring that a previous contractor did and repaired the problem at a very fair cost. David came back twice at no charge to make sure we were satisfied and every part of the house was modernized. He was able to very affordably get our old house set up with modern wiring. I highly recommend Webb Electric for any electrical job you have in Utah.

Chris came over this evening to fix my bathtub faucet. He was extremely kind and knew exactly what needed to be done. He didn’t waste any time fixing the problem! Even though it was a late appointment for him, he showed up with a smile and an overall positive demeanor. I’ll definitely be using Cransten again for home repairs!

We needed our new kitchen appliances installed so I went through Thumbtack for quotes. I wound up hiring Quality Home Appliance. The reviews were very good, but what caught my eye was the guarantee of his work. I had just had a pretty bad experience with a previous general contractor, so his guarantee was important. I could not have asked for anything more. Simon was wonderful!! We scheduled an appointment, he arrived when he said he would, he knew exactly what he was doing and everything was done in about 30 minutes. And on top of his work quality, he is a wonderfully good person and a joy to talk with. You won't go wrong!! I have Quality Home Appliance contact information saved, any issues needing repairs or installs, he will be my Go To!! Thank you Simon! Happy Holidays to you and your Family! Linda & Deanna

Todd came to my home to diagnose/repair a problem with my monitor. He was on time, courteous and very professional. He shared information beyond what I asked for and while we were unable to diagnose the issue to a lack of symptoms, he explained how I could resolve the issue if it recurred.

Daniel is a great contractor! I had a cracked tub I was going to have him replace. Not only did he provide me with the bid, but he also suggested I patch it instead of replace it. He found someone who specialized in repairing tubs and even set up the appointment for me. By repairing the tub I saved hundreds of dollars and you can’t even tell it was damaged! Also, I mentioned I had some home repairs I wasn’t comfortable fixing myself (fixing a couple towels racks, installing a lock, fixing a glass door and installing a cage over a vent). Daniel was the right man for the job! Not only did he text me to confirm our appointment the day before, but he arrived on time equipped with all the tools to get the jobs done! He’s very professional, nice and did quality work! Oh and he even cleaned up after himself! Overall, I’ll be hiring Daniel again. He’s trustworthy and is very skilled. Thanks Daniel!!

These guys were awesome. The entire plumbing in my home needed to be replaced. I was in a bad spot with no water. I had 5 companies come out to bid the job. Terry's bid was not the lowest (close) but I hired him because I was the most impressed by him. Terry was booked for the next few days but understood my situation was an emergency. He was able to move his schedule around, came out the very next day, and did all the plumbing in my entire home. Terry had my back big time. I will definitely be calling him back to do more work on my home. Thank you Terry!

I am extremely happy with the work that was done in my home. These guys patched up the holes in my walls and put door stoppers in to prevent more holes. I am not the handy man type and I don’t have time to look for tools, drywall, etc. I will definitely be hiring them again!

I had a major water leak. Matt had to dig out the pipe, repair and replace it. It was cold, wet, and snowing, but he took care of it for me. I was very pleased with the job. I'm sorry that I haven't given him the review before this.

Jared did a great job on our TV wall mount over the fireplace. We were having issues running the cable thru the smurf tube. Jared went out of his way to go Home Depot and find a solution for it. I would recommend working with Jared!

Andy was great! He knew exactly how to install my items and made them work easily with our phones. When he heard we were finishing our basement, he offered to give us a quote. Best of all, he gave us great suggestions in where to place our home theater components to make the room look clean and uncluttered. Thank you Andy!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.
