Brandon Taleisnik says, "Windows Direct Utah seriously saved us big-time on our window project. I am incredibly grateful to Dallin and his team! They are truly fantastic. We originally went with a different contractor who was very hard to work with, had many incorrect measurements for our custom window dimensions, and was giving us a very long lead time for how long until he could install. I messaged Dallin when the window order was ready to see if he could install the windows the other contractor ordered. He called me very quickly, and was able to squeeze me in later that week. The window dimensions were quite inaccurate because of the other contractor, but Dallin is a true expert/professional and used some creative tips and tricks learned over many years of experience to find a way to get them in successfully and have a great outcome. Super easy to work with, great people, good pricing, etc. He truly saved the day! Would 1000% recommend."See more

Anya B. says, "We were looking for a specialist to fix and remodel our master bathroom shower, and Oleg did a marvelous job with that, plus fixed holes and dents in our walls around the house (our boys play soccer). We are grateful he took on our project, even though he had a main job some place else. He’s done very thorough work, kept great communication. We are very pleased with the job done and would recommend Oleg to anyone’s in need of a professional. By the way, last time we were told we couldn’t save our shower glass and had to purchase new one. Oleg was like: no problem, I’ll work with what you have. He carefully took it down and when walls were ready, and tiles were up, he put all the glass structure back together and installed it. Saved us a few thousands, thanks so much!"See more

Nicole Noakes says, "I had a super tiny laundry room for a family of 5, lets face it, laundry slobs. I waited years and finally made the move to take out some walls, closets, completely redo it and have room for two washer and dryers in a much more open space. Brandon and his crew helped every step of the way, with Brandon coming out to my home several times before I even paid a dime or committed to hire him, just to figure out work arounds to plumbing issues that ended up saving me thousands he couldve charged. But he knew how badly I needed this and what my budget was and I have never in my life experienced a contractor so dedicated to finding a solution so I could make this happen. He called on specialist friends even to come out and when I thought it was a lost cause he found a way to give me a bid even lower than the original. Talk about an honest contractor who actually cares about the people hes helping. I was floored. Communication was amazing throughout, I never had to track him down he always reached out before I even thought to. Ive told all my friends and neighbors about Brandon and Ive never felt safer or more respected having him and his crew in my home. Ill never use anyone else for anything I need around my home. Thank you so much Brandon."See more

John S. says, "I hired Ironside Builders for several projects around my home, including drywall repair, painting, and installing a new light fixture, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. The work was clean, precise, and done with real attention to detail. They showed up on time, communicated clearly throughout the entire process, and made sure everything was done right before wrapping up. It’s hard to find someone this reliable and professional these days. Pricing was fair, and there were no surprises. Everything was explained upfront, which I really appreciated. You can tell they take pride in their work and actually care about the finished product. I’ll definitely be using Ironside Builders again and would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a dependable handyman in the Salt Lake area."See more

Brodie M. says, "I would really like to give these guys a five-star rating, however, because of a couple of issues I have to knock off one star, you can decide for yourself if I gave them the proper rating. The first issue was that when I spoke with the salesman, he said he would pick out the color and design. I agreed. He then ordered it without ever sending a sample photo to us. We did a change order and added a bench to the shower. Apparently, the design and color that was chosen were included in the change order, but it was never pointed out to us. When the shower walls were installed we were very unhappy with it. To rectify the situation, we had to pay $1,100 for new, higher grade walls and they installed them free of charge for labor. The second issue is that the rain shower head sticks out too far. Unfortunately, the system is one piece, and so the arm cannot simply be replaced, the whole system would need to be replaced to fix it. On the plus side, the wrong glass walls were originally quoted to us. Higher end, much more expensive ones had to be installed, and they took care of that for us. I think it ended up costing them around $1,200 to do so. They had great communication. And even after we had already paid them almost all of the cost for the shower, they still took care of the issues as quickly as they could. They even came in on Saturdays to get it done. You can definitely trust this company. When I have more work in the future for other things we want to do to our home, I will definitely be giving them a call."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
