Before the technician even arrived, I got a call in the morning to confirm my appointment. Once Alex got to my house, I immediately knew I was in good hands. I needed to have locks re-keyed for a new home purchase, a replacement deadbolt, and a security door lock changed. The house is older and gives me plenty of challenges -- locks included. The technician assured me from the moment he arrived that he may be at my home a while, but he'd definitely get everything accomplished -- and he wasn't kidding. Over the course of three hours, he retro-fitted a security door with an exit-safe lock (required by DC for my rental unit), made sure everything fit and closed appropriately, installed a new lock in a space where an old and no-longer-used model had been (which required quite a bit of drilling), FIXED a situation I had assumed was unfixable with what he described as an "un-jimmie-able" lock, and was all around pleasant and wonderful. I can't say for sure what other locksmiths would have charged me for the work, but I feel that every penny spent was worth it for the well-explained, fantastic job he did.

Alpha Locksmith did an outstanding job fixing two of the door locks in my home and installing one new one. I've had two other locksmiths try to fix the locks, but after a couple of weeks the locks failed again. Alex Salinas of Alpha Locksmiths arrived on time, and unlike one other locksmith, had all of the parts needed to immediately fix the locks. Plus he was very polite.i highly recommend his service.

The tech was professional, on time and fixed our locks with ease. I was very pleased with his services and his prices were very fair. Schott was friendly and very nice to talk to. I have used several locksmiths as a property manager, but I would highly recommend Schott and Son, and will use him again.

Dani was a pleasure to work with. Once hired, it was a matter of minutes before we started communicating and scheduled his arrival. Dani came by, walked through the entire process of replacing my lock and did that in professional manner. I heard a lot of bad things about locksmiths as service providers and I am glad that I hired Dani as he changed my entire perspective. I would recommend Dani and Golden Hands Locksmith with all my heart to anyone in need of a professional locksmith service.

The locksmith was fantastic! His replacement of my 50 year old YALE deadbolt on the security gate was a tedious job but his professionalism and knowledge was what made the installation look and perform perfect! Personal note: in this day of hard working service professionals that run up against jobs that are not normal and require extra time to complete; understand when these professionals are running behind. It is not their fault. Keystream kept me in the loop that a job previous had complications and was taking longer. I appreciate their hard work and honesty. Again, I cannot thank enough our technician, he arrived ready to do the installation both prepared and in a positive frame of mind even though I knew behind the scenes that he could have been frustrated. You very well might have a locksmith closer or cheaper....but neither of those two things count when you are concerned about a security/safety issue! Kudos to Keystream!

Very professional! I had a set of keys that needed to get made for my apartment. I went to Lowe's and Home Depot to get them cut and both places just stuck them in a digital machine when the keys came out they didn't even match up they were cut completely off because if the digital machine...no one knows how to cut them by hand anymore. So, I called Eagle Locksmiths to see if they could help out. When he arrived he just cut the keys by hand perfectly! I'm so happy and will recommend their service to others. Thanks for being legit and professional and not some brain dead monkey standing behind a digital key cutter.

He is an independent businessman. We received a quick response and his work was thorough. He wanted first to make our existing lock function, but the internal parts were too damaged. He was polite and professional and the new lock works far better than the last. We highly recommended his service. We understand the importance to use a locksmith for any future installations.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to have a deadbolt lock installed?

Installing a new deadbolt lock can improve your home security, especially if you think your current lock system has been compromised or there are unaccounted-for copies of your house keys in circulation. A professional locksmith can install a new deadbolt for you in a matter of hours. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100. Locksmith prices for installing deadbolts may be higher based on whether the professional provides the lock or you have it on hand, how many components the locking system includes, and how long the installation takes. The cost to purchase a lock yourself from a big-box store can range from approximately $70 to $225 or more, depending on quality and materials. Higher-security locks often take longer and therefore cost more to install.

How does a locksmith open a locked door?

Locksmiths use specialized tools and techniques to open your door in the case of lockouts or lost keys. Trained locksmiths can pick your door lock with lock-picking tools such as a rake, a tension wrench, a half diamond or a hook. They may use a technique called bumping, which will work on pin tumbler locks, or as a last resort they may use a drill to remove your existing lock. The national average locksmith price ranges between $70 and $100. A locksmith can also replace your current lock system, re-key your locks if you have lost your keys, repair a broken lock, install a deadlock and more. Locksmiths not only help with front doors, they can help if you are locked out of your car, locked out of your mailbox, locked out of your shed … you name it. There may be an additional charge for emergency after-hours locksmith services. Check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to make a new key for a car?

Locksmiths’ prices for making new car keys can vary depending on the make of your car as well as the time of day and location. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100, but duplicating a key may cost as little as $30, while extraction a key stuck in the ignition, cutting a new key and programming the fob can cost much more.

You might need a new car key if you have lost your key, the key broke in the ignition, the key is bent or damaged, or you just want a duplicate in case of emergency. You can request a duplicate of a key you have on hand, or you can have a new key made or cut if you have lost your original car keys. If you need to replace lost keys, you’ll need to first provide proof that you are the owner of the car along with the vehicle identification number (VIN). If you’re just locked out of your car but don’t need a key made, a locksmith may charge $65 to get you back in. Locksmith car key services are often far more affordable than dealership prices for new keys.

How much does it cost for a car locksmith?

There are several reasons you may need a car locksmith. You may be locked out of your car (either with the keys inside or with no keys at all), you may have lost your car keys and need a new key, or you may want to make a duplicate car key. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100. Getting locked out of your car can be scary and overwhelming — especially if it’s cold and dark out. Fortunately, professional locksmiths provide round-the-clock assistance to help people in these circumstances.

Car lockouts are one of the main reasons people need a locksmith. Your locksmith’s price can depend on the type of car you have, the time of day (or night) it is, and where you are located. Locksmith pricing may be based on a flat rate, or pricing may be quoted to you after the locksmith determines the circumstances. For example, a flat rate for a car lockout could be $65 for standard vehicles. That price could be higher for after-hours or long-distance service, or service during extreme weather. If you have entirely lost your car keys, a locksmith can make you a new car key, but first they must verify that you are the owner of the car. Locksmiths can even program new car key fobs for you — often at a lower price than a dealership.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
