Introduction: My name is John Allen Nelson and I have over 20 years of professional experience in the opera and classical music field. Along with my own performance career, I have been in the private music education space since 2011. I use my extensive vocal education, experience, and passion for teaching to help others develop their own voice in the world of classical music, opera, and musical theater. My past and current students are singing as soloists and choral members in symphony orchestras, church choirs, and on the opera stage. As they say in the Marine Corps, I will give you the "Bottom Line Up Front" -> John Allen Nelson Is a talented, insightful, personable and extremely gifted teacher I took 3 years of voice while in college. Since that time I have sung occasionally at church or funerals. But In the decades since my training, I have forgotten much of what I learned. I am now at the point Where my ability to sing is emotionally dependent. I rely the power of emotion In order to access my voice. Unfortunately, that approach is unreliable. As it turns out, the freeing power of positive emotion is easily lost in the stress and fear of singing in public. At least for me. My goal and desire is to reach the point where I can play my voice like an instrument, independent of positive or negative emotions. I found John online and thought I'd give him a try. I'm so glad that I did. John is amazing. He is so experienced, well-trained, and wise about the nuances and the deep magic of singing, that in my first lesson he was able to pinpoint my problems. John is a great communicator, and a caring and very effective teacher. Every lesson he points out areas where I need improvement, and takes the time to explain and example proper technique - and then coach me in executing that technique. He also explains the anatomical realities that are relevant to singing. He explains what is happening with the vocal chords, the upper palate, the throat itself Et cetera. That knowledge is helpful to me in understanding what Is happening with my body, what Should be happening, and how to correct it. John just has a way of getting to the heart of the matter and explaining how to fix things. I profit greatly From every lesson. Studying with John has renewed my hope that I will be able one day to reliably access the full potential of the voice that God has given me. I candidly, personally and highly recommend him to those who are seeking to do the same.

After 25 years of not using my instrument, I wanted to reconnect with the part of me that enjoyed singing. John is both approachable and knowledgeable and his expertise in the craft of classical vocal instruction is apparent. John has taught me so much in the short amount of time we have worked together. It is obvious that he is incredibly knowledgeable about the voice. He is very patient, kind, honest, and works to make sure that I have a lot of progress. John is a gifted teacher! He taught my son a brand new song quickly and showed him how to work with his newly changed voice. He works great with teenagers, my son felt very comfortable and enjoyed the lessons. We will definitely be back for more lessons. Highly recommended!

My lesson rate is per hour, I offer 60 min, 45min, or 30 min lessons.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I have no set process as every student needs are different. There is no obligation to sign up and purchase multiple lessons in advance.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Masters's degree in vocal performance from UMKC Conservatory of Music and a Performance certificate from Boston University's Opera Institute. I have performed professionally in opera and on the concert stage across the United States.
