Flooring is one of the most important structural and aesthetic parts of any home. EBRR team has done an exceptional job. The whole project was executed as per my instructions and it came out well. That’s the best part, they listen to what you say and do exactly how you need. EBRR experts made my floor looking amazing and functionally safe!!! Trust these guys to do their job and you won't regret!

David came and worked on 2 drains-- 1) one in my basement which had clogged up the days before. After fixing it, he gave me some tips to prevent future clogging 2) my kitchen sink, which had been an issue for YEARS! instead of just snaking it, as other had, he realized it was a bigger structural problem and he fixed it. Thank you!!!!!!!!

Antonio and his crew did more than I asked for and did it well. They worked under time pressure yet were very thorough to complete plumbing, electrical and structural work. He showed me his work along the way so I could see they were doing it right. I intend to reuse them.

Christian and his team did a great job on the replacement of bricks and iron railing along steps leading one story up to front door of our townhouse. Original railing was 30 years old, totally rusted, and disconnected from the steps, which made it a serious liability. The team found bricks that matched the shape of the current ones, constructed the railing so it was identical to the original design (required by the HOA) and painted it with three layers of primer/paint to fend off future rust. Project included sanding and repainting an iron gate as well. I am totally pleased with the finished product and will be soon using the 5th Gen Group for another brick project.

Valle Remodeling and the owner/lead contractor Manuel were referred to me by my daughter who had work done by the company. Manuel and his team remodeled the entire first floor of my townhouse and the result is beyond my expectations. He and the workers were always on time, were very cordial, got the work done in a timely manner and left the place in order at the end of each day. Everything, from the hardwood floors to the painting to the electrical work, etc. were done professionally. My husband and I had never done remodeling before and Manuel took us through each step, making the process much easier than we anticipated. I wholeheartedly recommend Valle Remodeling and will be hiring them again when we're ready to tackle another level of our home.

AquaGuard repaired by basement seepage and structural issues - and they did it right the first time. I now have a dry basement, structural sound walls and we can finally enjoy the extra living space. It's been over 10 years and we've never had a problem I would recommend AquaGuard to anyone.

Ramon and his crew improved several long standing drainage issues on our property by installing a drainage pipe to the edge of our property and including a catchment basin and connecting our gutters as well as grading around our property and installing drains and a timber egress window well around our large basement window. He also put a small metal well and graded around a small window at grade. I had put off this drainage problem for some time because I knew it would be a lot of work and was sure it would cost a lot of money and/or take a lot of time but it became an emergency when we installed a larger window in our basement and were unable, for various reasons, to get a well installed with a workable shortterm solution of trying to use a well cover, gravel base and good grading to keep the well from filling with water during our torrential rains. Mr. Mendoza gave me a very reasonable price and he and his crew had the project complete in 2 days. I am so happy looking at this project... I had been thinking about it for so long and it is such a relief to finally have our property protected. Civil Engineering and water resources is my professional field as well and I am very impressed with Mr. Mendoza's knowledge and common sense approach (did not try to sell me anything I didn't need) and also enjoyed interacting with him and his crew.

A windstorm blew down part of our brick patio wall. We knew we would face extra pressure from our HOA to make sure the repair matched the style and color of the walls that still remained. Kuldar was understanding and very helpful. He explained our options and then worked hard to find bricks, arrange them, and clean the wall in a way that made the new wall match the pre-existing structure as much as possible. We were out-of-state, but he communicated well and sent us updated pictures throughout the project. We appreciate his help and recommend him to anyone needing help with a similar project.

I had structural problems with my house, since a previous owner had damaged and partly removed a load bearing wall. Henry came by the house and we looked at the problem together, and came up with a practical and cost-effective solution. Then he went home, and prepared permit-ready calculations within a couple of days. I walked them through the permit office with no problems and the work is underway. He has been available to promptly answer some follow up questions too. Recommended!

We recently had a complete kitchen remodel and are very happy with the results. We hired Dennis Gillooly of Trimline Construction as the general contractor. We were on a very tight budget and after pricing the options from a local cabinet supplier, Dennis suggested we look at using Ready to Assemble cabinets instead. He explained the various options and helped us with the design, layout, and ordering of these cabinets from an east coast supplier. This saved us more than 50% vs the original quoted cost from the local supplier! We got really nice cabinets at a fraction of the cost. Dennis put these cabinets together, installed them, helped us pick the perfect handles, installed those as well, and completed all the trim work to make the finished job look wonderful. We love our new kitchen – it looks great! We also previously used Dennis Gillooly to finish our 1,200 sq foot basement. Dennis took care of managing everything including the design, framing, drywall, a full bathroom, kitchenette/bar area, a ton of storage closets including a cedar closet and custom shelving, the big recreation room, enclosed office space, new French doors, cutting in new windows in our concrete walls, and he personally installed 1,200 sq feet of engineered wood flooring throughout. We painted the basement ourselves in order to save money and found Dennis very willing to work with us to make such a large project both affordable but also exactly what we wanted.

New Heaven listened to our concept, made the necessary structural suggestions, and was able to provide an estimate within our budget. It was very easy to work with them and if there were last minute changes that needed to be condsidered it wasn't a problem. The staff at New Heaven are very detail oriented and I wouldn't hesitate to use them in the future.

Interconnect wired my house for Cat6, creating 6 total ports in 3 rooms of our house. Their work was impeccable with clean, well-labeled ports throughout the house. They worked efficiently and the entire process was seamless and professional from start-to-finish. I highly recommend Interconnect for any residential networking!

I have called on Brad to handle many personal plumbing, heating, and renovation issues both interior and exterior. But until I had my organization contract him to resolve some weatherization issues for our contractors, I had no idea of the professional caliber of his work. He is a venerable engineering and construction knowledge base, and his hands on work is skillful, concise, and clean.

I hired Amika Studio to help SGT with our brand refresh in 2006. At the time we had just graduated from the 8a Small Business program and were rapidly growing. We needed our brand to reflect our new size. Amika Studio came in and provided outstanding consultation. They took the time to learn about our company and our business goals. In addition to providing us with access to their talented design team, they offered us expert guidance on strategies to position our brand for the greatest reach. They recognized that we were trying to not only establish ourselves as a leader in engineering and science support services at NASA, but to also penetrate new markets. They also recognized that though we were growing, we had a limited budget and a quick turn-around time. Amika Studio consistently met our needs by delivering superior products in a timely manner and under budget. Since they assisted us with our first brand refresh in 2006, including the redesign of our web site, logo and all of our marketing materials, our customer base and our revenue has grown over 200%. Amika Studio helped us establish our reputation as one of the top 100 companies in the Space industry worldwide. Their professional demeanor, comprehension of customer goals and project management skills made for a positive experience on every project they have provided support for and have led to amazing results and huge ROIs.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
