Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How high should you install a TV mount on a wall?

The actual height you mount your TV will depend on the layout of your room. If you’re mounting it above a fireplace or in an alcove, the height of these structures will determine the mounting height of your TV. However, Bob Villa recommends positioning your TV 42 inches on-center in conventional rooms with standard seated viewing.

Can a TV be mounted above a fireplace?

You may be able to mount your flat screen TV above your fireplace for a more streamlined look in your living room. In fact, TV mounting professionals can hang your flat screen TV flush with a wall or from a tilting or full-motion bracket mount in any room in your home. A tilting or full-motion mount may be the best option above a fireplace so you can tilt the TV down for the best viewing angle. Whether the wall above your fireplace is brick, drywall, concrete, stone or plaster, most television mounting services can accommodate your needs. Hardier wall surfaces like concrete or brick will require more labor and expertise to mount, and will likely have a higher price range.

If you want your AV and cable wires hidden in the wall, you will also pay a higher price due to the added time and skill to properly drill the holes and run wires. Before mounting your TV above your fireplace, consult with the manufacturer about necessary distance from heat sources. If the space above your fireplace gets too warm, another location could be better for the longevity of your TV. Your television mounting services may take between one and two hours, or more depending on your home theater setup.

How much does it cost to mount a TV?

Elevate your home style with television mounting services. The national average price for television mounting services ranges between $100 and $130. Factors that can affect cost are the material of the wall you want the TV mounted on, whether you want the wires hidden, and any additional entertainment system connection you desire. It probably costs more to mount a TV on brick, stone or concrete than on drywall or plaster due to the added labor required to drill holes. For example, a company may charge an additional $99 to mount a TV on a brick wall. Here are some examples of average costs for television mounting services:

  • Basic TV wall mount: $40. Does not include bracket, device connection or strip management.
  • TV wall mount: $119. Includes bracket, mounting services, strip management system (for concealing external wires), and connection of all entertainment devices.
  • TV wall mount with wires hidden inside wall: $139.
  • Installation of additional electrical outlet: $65.
  • TV wall mount over fireplace with wires hidden: $179-$249.
  • TV wall mount and up to 5 speakers wall-mounted with hidden wires: $399.

Can you mount any TV?

Many TVs can be mounted with standard equipment. However, you need to cover a few details before mounting a TV. Know the size and weight of your TV before you purchase a mount. Additionally, make sure your TV follows the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) standards by looking for the VESA logo followed by a number. Match this number to the VESA-compatible mount to ensure compatibility. If you’re unsure if your TV can be mounted, contact the best professional TV mounting services in your area to see if they can offer guidance and help you with the installation.

How do I hide the wires to my wall-mounted TV?

You can hide wires from a hanging TV on a wall by putting them behind the wall. However, this requires some drilling or buying an in-wall power kit. Alternatively, you can use what’s called a “raceway” — a hollow metal or plastic channel — that runs down your wall and hides your cables from sight. To get the job done right, and avoid risking damage to your wall, hire a professional TV wall mount installer near you.

Can you mount a TV without studs?

Yes, you can mount a TV without studs using hollow wall anchors, which are used to hang objects on a wall, according to Digital Trends. However, these have limits. Make sure they can handle the weight of your TV.

If you’re not comfortable mounting a TV on the wall without studs by yourself, hire a top-rated professional in your area instead.

What tools do you need to mount a TV on the wall?

You need several tools to mount a TV on a wall. Often, the tools that are needed include safety goggles, a stud finder or hollow wall anchors, a level, a power drill and bits of various sizes. You’ll also likely need a socket wrench and screwdriver set. If you don’t have these tools, hire a TV wall mount installer near you who can do the job and bring their own tools.

Are TV wall mounts universal?

TV wall mounts are generally universal. This is because most TV wall mounts comply with standards set forth by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). Thanks to this set of standards, any mount you buy is likely to be a universal TV wall mount. However, exceptions do apply. Certain brands may not follow VESA standards, and though this is rare, it’s worth checking to make sure you’re buying a VESA-compatible universal TV mount.

Can you mount a TV in drywall?

Yes, it’s possible to mount a TV on drywall. To make sure the job is done right and you don’t end up damaging your wall or injuring yourself, consider contacting one of the best TV wall mount installers near you. When contacting professionals, make sure you tell them you wish to mount a TV in drywall.

Can a TV mounting service also install a home theater system?

Yes, a TV mounting service is often able to install a home theater system as well. Companies and technicians who offer flat-screen TV wall mount installation service may offer package deals on installing surround sound and other parts of a home theater installation. To find the best TV mounting service near you that can install a surround sound system in your home, compare companies side by side. Ahmed did an incredible job mounting a 70 in TV in my living room and concealing the wires behind the wall. He also installed rear surround speakers and seamlessly hid the speaker wire behind the wall. In my bedroom, I had him mount a 65 in tv and install a power outlet behind it. Finally, a 50 in tv was mounted in my office. A time consuming job! Ahmed showed attention to detail and worked diligently the whole time to deliver a perfect product. Would happily recommend him to any of my friends for installation. Thanks again!

Cable Connexions was an excellent experience - from the initial contact to schedule a TV wall mount to the completion of the install. The service tech was extremely proficient and pleasant. Arrived on time and left the room in excellent condition. I will keep Cable Connexions at the top of my list of companies to use in future endeavors. Well done - could not have expected more.

I recently had my TV mounted by Cable Connexions (CC) along with a lot of cable, HDMI, etc and a rack mounted. The work was decent. NOT GREAT, but decent. The most frustrating part is that a number of things changed from when I got the estimate to when I paid the bill. Here's a list of just some: 1. James told me, "we won't put any hole in the wall except the one behind the TV for the wall plate." They put 2 holes in the living room wall in addition to the wall plate. 2. James said that labor was $65/hour. During the installation he told me that labor was $75/hour. 3. He quoted me a price for a cabinet of $450. On my bill he charged me $475. When I questionioned him about it . . . after scrambling and trying to figure out the answer he then says "well, uhhh, uhhh, it's because I don't charge tax. The $475 includes tax." There were some other issues with the install: I was charged $189 for a sound bar install. That consisted of plugging it in (to a receptacle that we specifically discussed making a recessed receptacle) and running a small optical cable about 2 ft behind a wall (which I specifically mentioned that I could and would do. The price for getting it plugged in and the 4 minutes to run the cable, $189. 2. James didn't have some of the drill bits or tools he needed. That prompted an hour trip to Home Depot (glad I'm paying $75/hr . . . vs. the $65 he originally quoted). 3. I paid $90 per 35' HDMI cable. High quality HDMI 35' HDMI cables can be purchased for $40. I'm sure they would be less in bulk, which he would buy them. The markup on equipment was like buying food or souvenirs at Disney World. 4. Lastly, my bill had ~$180 charge for installing an X-Box kinnect. I didn't have that installed . . . and we had to adjust the bill. In full disclosure, my install was difficult. An older home that had been completely remodeled, brick exterior with triple studs in the outside walls. Additionally, James did run 2 extra cables to my living room and DID NOT charge me for them. I felt that made the $189 sound bar install about even. And we did go over the bill line for line -- HE DID NOT try to get me to pay without reviewing or agreeing. In summary, if you are getting a home theater installed I would recommend using someone else. I think you will get about the same quality of work but probably pay less.

Don't bother calling anybody else-all the great reviews are true!! Hamed was unbelievably accommodating, friendly, and an expert at installations! He replied promptly and patiently to all my many questions. Despite me giving him bad information about the wall materials, he left and drove to the store to pickup the correct hardware a few minutes away, graciously putting up with finding a parking spot again and working in a high rise apartment (which is huge pain in the butt!) In any event, I called around, and was pleasantly surprised to find the best price on TV mounting also got awesome reviews across the board. I wholeheartedly recommend Blue Tigers, and will absolutely use them for all future projects!
