Steven answered my message from Thumbtack minutes after I sent it. The next morning at 9am he was ready to do the work-- I hired him to wash 10 Windows. He was professional and polite and offered a fair price. The work was done really well. I've asked him to come back to do three other home-maintenance projects for me as a result of today's work. What a nice guy. You should hire him too!

Paul (Blades Lawn and Landscape) is great. The communication from the introduction to planning the next steps we need to take on our property was conveyed clearly and professionally! He knows his stuff. He will be doing more work for us soon (tree removal) and we know this will be an ongoing relationship. We have found our landscaper! We highly recommend you secure his services. Lucus Tree & Landscaping provided excellent service at a reasonable price. The company trimmed a large Silver Maple in the backyard completing the job within 2 hours after the bid. Due to significant dead growth and steep inclines, maneuvering through the job was difficult. From start to finish, the team was skilled and professional. I would hire the team for future projects and have no problem recommending them to friends and family.

Our tall dead trees reside in a semi-wooded area very close to the house and fence, which means they were difficult (and therefore expensive) to take down. We chose Frank's Tree Service because Francisco was responsive, experienced, understood our needs and gave us a rate we could stretch to afford. Most importantly, Francisco delivered as promised. His team was even able to take down a 20ft tree without harming a sapling that was no more than a couple of inches from the dead tree. He was flexible to take on more work at a reasonable rate when we discovered another sick tree while they were working. They cleaned up so well after their work that even the debris we had left from before were hauled away. We were so pleased that the logs we asked to be left behind for firewood were evenly cut and beautifully stacked. Their experience and precision shines through so much that they make strenuous work look almost effortless. In fact, his climber looked so good climbing that I am inspired to learn more about tree climbing. I heartily recommend them to everyone who needs tree work. My only reservation is that they might get so busy that they wouldn't be able to help me when I need them.

This was a request for a tree planting. Brian responded quickly and worked me into his schedule to see the space. He provided multiple suggestions for a tree that fit the space as well as my wants for coverage and aesthetics. He provided estimates quickly and obtained and planted the tree in a more than reasonable amount of time. Very happy with the outcome. A pleasure to work with.

Joshua and his crew did an amazing job for us!!! I interviewed 5 different landscapers before deciding upon Kober's and I'm so glad we did! He transformed our Manakin Sabot home by adding a beautiful stacked stone retaining wall, removing the existing material, replanting an island of ornamental plants that were dead, adding a new driveway border on a very lengthy driveway, and MORE! In fact, he put stacked stone on the back side, visible from the inside windows of our home, simply because he knew it would look better as we looked out. I'll update my post by adding photos once the extra plants I ordered from him come in this week. He was so punctual and even worked on the 4th of July to finish our job before the weekend, although we certainly didn't expect that. The job took a few days and every single day, they would clean up the driveway and yard so that everything looked neat and clean after they left, just to bring it all back out the next day. That's having pride in your services, as well as your client's property. We had scorching hot temps while the job was going on but that didn't phase them --I am just so impressed. If you are looking for a landscaper who will provide excellent service at a very fair price, please do yourself a favor and hire Kober's Landscaping. Sure glad we did!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
