Had a good experience with Ron's plumbing. Call early on Monday morning and was able to get service by early afternoon. It was a simple valve replacement for an outside spigot, but figured it out quickly and for the price quoted.

I called David on Monday and he started work that Friday. I had already called Hercules Fences and Chesapeake Fences - neither company called me back. David's prices were reasonable - especially since he was building the fence, not using premade pickets. The wood he used was weather treated. We found a couple pickets that we didn't like for cosmetic reasons, and David replaced them no questions asked. He made sure that the gates opened smoothly and didn't drag on the ground. He said that if there was ever anything broken over the years to just call him and he will replace the broken piece at cost. Over all a very professional guy. The fence looks great and we couldn't be happier. We are using him again to work on our pergola.

Lee and his employee James were great! After having 5 contractors come to my house for in-home estimates to complete my finished off garage, I hired Lee for the job. Lee came out to give us a quote to frame and drywall a ten foot wall, to closet in my washer and dryer - he was extremely reasonable in price, started immediately, and had the job done on time, as promised. They were prompt, excellent, quality work and cleaned up everything when the job was complete. I would absolutely hire Lee and James again!!

Mr. Saunders came out to my house right away and gave me a good quote for the work I needed. He was very knowledgeable and personable -- clearly an expert on skylights. He was candid and helpful in providing a set of actionable options for repair and replacement at different price points. For other unrelated reasons I was not able to contract for the work at the time, but I was impressed with Mr. Saunders and will definitely seek out KS Express Carpentry for future needs.

This company is amazing to work with. First, the salesperson, Hinton, is very responsive, informative and not at all pushy. Great guy! He even stopped by one day while the installation crew was here to make sure things were going well. The windows and patio door we had installed are of very high quality. Awesome product! Love them!! The installation crew is fantastic!!! From the first day , courteous, respectful, meticulous. They clean as they work, never saw anything like it. They take pride in their work and it shows in their precision and workmanship. They take their time to make sure it gets done right and we appreciate that. No rush job. When they left you never knew they were here. Amazing!!! Can’t say enough about CVP. They will be our only go to company for any window service. You will not be disappointed. AND they have fair pricing!!!!

I was in need of a few handyman projects around the house so I called Cindee's home improvement. They showed up on time and were very friendly. Their estimate came in well below other contractors' prices and they finished my projects on time and on budget. I would highly recommend Cindee's Home Improvement and Repair. I will be calling them for my next project. Thanks, Jason F.

We had a couple obstacles going into this project... I live out of state, our home has tenants and the weather. One window was leaking, but I honestly was not sure what the problem was, but Mr. Hildreth made it out to the house the day we agreed upon, and was able to determine the problem. He sent detailed pictures to me, along with an estimate. The weather pushed the start date back a couple of times, but because of the delay he organized quite a few employees to be at my home on the first nice day promptly at 9am, and finished the whole project in one day. (It was originally estimated to take 2-3). He was also kind enough to send me progress pictures throughout the day to keep me informed. I am very grateful for Mr. Hildreth doing quality work and I indeed to utilize his services in the future!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
