The service was excellent. Andrea was very knowledgeable and extremely patient with us and our 2 puppies. She was flexible with her scheduling and generous with good advice. We will be using Andrea again for the continuation of the dog training.

Paula is the best pet sitter I've ever had. She takes great care of my 2 dogs, SweetPea & SnowPea. She came to my home during a snowstorm to check on them. She recently was doing a sit while I was away and had it not been for her training as a vet tech, my dog would have died. She rushed her to the pet emergency clinic which saved her life. Paula is the best and I'm so glad she takes care of my Peas'. Paula is wonderful, trustworthy and honest, we all love her and consider her part of our family.

I had never used a pet sitter before and was desperate to find someone to watch my 3 dogs on the 4th of July so we could attend our nephews wedding in Pa. (who knew how difficult that would be!) Ali watched my 14 year old blind/deaf dog and my 8 month old and 8 week old puppy. She was so attentive and even sent me pictures while we were gone! 2 weeks later we had her come back for training of the babies and they went crazy when they saw her... it was like she was a member of the family. I have done a lot of internet searching for dog training and am amazed at what Ali was able to accomplish in just one hour. I cannot recommend her enough, she is wonderful!!!

I would highly recommend Gail for any type of dog obedience or training. She is extremely knowledgeable, professional and a true dog whisperer. Her guidance in correcting behavior in my adult dog and training lessons with our large puppy was spot on and successful. I continue to go to her for advice when I face challenges and most of the time the problem is with me not the dog because the dog responds to the training when done positively and correctly per her directions.

Carla taught me the importance of creating a relationship of respect and leadership with my dog Raven. It is such a joy to have a dog who makes eye contact and wants to walk with me now instead of pulling me all over the place on a walk. I can actually stop and talk to people I meet, most importantly when they have a dog also, and my Raven can control herself and sit out lie down and show her manners. Carla is very patient, explains the why of training, and gives very clear step by step homework to do to establish the behaviour that makes sharing your life with a dog a joy. I highly recommend her to anyone who needs to teach their dogs self control. I live in Chapel Hill, NC and find it is well worth the four hour drive to come to her. It is much better in the long run to find a trainer who knows dogs and can develop a training plan for your dog and not a cookie cutter approach that may not address the issues your dog needs the most. Hope to see you at Dutcheast Dog Training Center soon!

Dana is welcoming, pleasant, positive and honest. I have only done 1 session with her and I'm already excited for the additional 6 sessions. She was on time, professional and gave great guidance to dealing with my dog's behavioral problems. She is helping me with my dog's resource guarding and territorial aggression in the house. It is super important to me that Dana offers home evals and sessions. She offers great availability and travels to your home. Within that first home eval, I was able to learn a couple new tricks to deal with and prevent my dog's behaviors. She even gave me some fun treat recipes! I will have to re-review this dog training after the six sessions to comment more on her specific skills and techniques. But, I can tell you, this trainer is great!

Most people say, "My crazy puppy/dog needs training." The great thing about Off Leash K9 is that they train the person and the dog reaps the benefit of a knowledgable owner. Moose, my high energy Hungarian Vizsla loves working with the trainers as it gives him job to do. He loves working for verbal affirmation vs. treats as do most dogs. Off Leash K9 also delivers on their method and it's instant which goes to show how smart dogs are when paired up with a well 'trained' owner!!

We have been using Wags To Whiskers services for several years. Cindy and her staff are thoroughly responsible and reliable and it is clear that they love animals. We know our pets are in good hands under their care. They took wonderful care of our elderly dog - pampering him and taking him on walks, and they were even able to give our feisty cat his medication.

Rose was terrific. She had some great information and gadgets that could aid me in working on my efforts to solve my frustrations with my dogs barking and potty training. She was extremely patient with the dogs and me, answering all of my questions. I learn so much. I highly recommend her to anyone seeking insight into better understanding and handling of your dog in any situation! I learned so much about my dogs in their OWN environment...that was quite a plus!!

Victoria Harter has trained my now 2 year old German shepherd to not only be obedient, which is essential for a 98 pound dog, but also to act as my service dog specializing in stability. I have illnesses which cause me to be unsteady and sometimes fall and my GSD is ready to pull me to where I direct her, to stand still while I lean on her, to escort me up escalators and into elevators. She is my guard dog, companion and confident. With Victoria's help, my shepherd is so socialized that I take her everywhere with me - shopping, to the mall, restaurants or to the park. She loves children and all dogs, all the while keeping an eye on me. I highly recommend Victoria for all aspects of dog training, but especially for stability and mobility help.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
