I used "Your Friends With A Truck" for a local move. Exactly what I would expect in a mover- polite workers, hard workers, did EXACTLY as I asked them to do when we got to the other house. I had a bad experience with another mover and learned a lesson, so I went behind the guys to make sure they did as I asked and they went further. Further, David's email had the expenses laid out so I could figure my budget for the move. I would recommend them for your move.

Moving is never fun but these guys made it much less stressful. Excellent communication, showed up on time and got the job done within budget. They laid down floor projection, wrapped my furniture and belongs in moving blankets and tape. Would highly recommend NovaMovers and will definitely use them again on my next move.

This is the first time I have used movers and they did an amazing job. I moved from a 3 story townhouse to a 1 bedroom apartment on the third floor. The three gentleman were extremely polite, courteous, and quick. The move from start to finish was 3 hours including travel. They handled my belongings with care and asked me where I wanted my boxes to be placed to make unpacking easier for me. I will definitely use them again and recommend Name Your Price Movers to anyone on a budget but still desire a quality and professionalism.

The men were experts and made the move easier to me. They came 20min early than scheduled. Also, The manager is very kind. Their price is fairly reasonable. And, there are no hidden fees in any shape or way. They use Budget truck to move the things. However, the only thing that bothered me is that both the men who came did not speak english very well, so you have to understand some little gibberish English mixed with Spanish. Overall a very great company and I would highly recommend them.

I have got the best service along with a great deal. I had a very tight budget and my move was not an easy one to execute. They went right to work wrapping and loading everything, and even helped me to seal up some boxes that I was having a hard time with. Nothing broken or otherwise harmed, nothing missing. All I can say is that this is how moving should be done. Pick a service, get a price, sign up and let the moving begin. Highly recommended!

These guys are simply the best. As everybody knows, there are always horror stories about movers, and I'm sure the quality and service you will receive are the best. We had an excellent move! They were on budget, on time, and there was NO damages. They protected the floors and railings in both the new and old house. True professionals! Rose was pleasant and gave the best advice and service, David did the In-Home estimate and was professional and knowledgeable. I had a one day (long distant move). Started at 7:30 am and they finished at my new home around 8:00 PM Daniel and crew were exceptional. Highly recommend.

I contracted with Mr. Welch for moving about 70 boxes to a small trailer. He helped me define the job more accurately and was responsive and fair with a really good price for the service. Though my plans changed for this opportunity, he was gracious and I will most certainly use this company again.

We hired SkyRide to move our one bedroom apartment and I was concerned because this was not an easy move. We were moving to a 4th floor apartment with no elevator and very narrow star cases.... It was also the hottest day of the year! Felt like 109 outside!! These guys made it look easy. I was amazed at how hard the two guys worked in such intense heat. We were in our new place in 2.5 hours!! This included moving all big furniture, boxes and the dismantling/reassembly of a queen bed and dining room table. I would highly recommend Fred and his team. They were nothing short of OUTSTANDING!

Found Tim on thumtack. After getting appointment set, I had to leave town for a couple of weeks. That did not effect Tim's stride, He stayed in touch letting me know he was ready when I was. He assisted us in finding a truck at a reasonable price. On the day he was early and I was late, again it did not break his stride. We were moving a 10x15 storage unit of loosely stacked articles to a 10x10 unit at a more reasonably priced storage facility. Again that did not brake his stride. He with one helper, that he left in his dust at getting the stuff stacked. He stacked the boxes tight and there was know problem getting the articles in the unit. He treats your articles as his. Tim is personable, professional, efficient and affordable. In fact at this time I have scheduled him to take the boxes out of the unit for me to look for some important papers and later in the day return and replace it in the unit. I trust Tim with all my moving needs. He also does several other jobs including drywall and furniture assembling. Thanks to Tim, be using you again. If you don't use Time for you needed services, big mistake.

This company deserves overall a Zero! I hired them to help me move my 1 bedroom apartment from MD to DC. I should have cancelled it from the very beginning when they wanted to charge me extra money for using my credit card vs cash!!?? Moving day: The time for arrival was set for 4 pm. The owner kept on postponing the arrival time with various stories why they were being late. I told them we needed to be at my building by 8pm as that was the end of the moving in time window and the building loading dock was closing at that time. I send several texts and tried calling multiple times to the company. They arrived close to 7 pm. WE arrived at my building late. I had to waste my time looking for a security guard who was kind enough to cooperate with us and let us use another loading dock which was a real hike to my entrance ( another extra hour wasted) . My plants were broken and I feared other items did too. And I was right. I demanded discount for the service and to be also reimbursed for the broken items. we negotiated discount and as I was tired and frustrated i agreed to 15% off. As for the reimbursement, I was told to send them all the photos of broken items and estimated cost. I did. Even after a number of emails and phone calls and almost 2 and a half months after the service, I have not been reimbursed yet. NEVER USE THIS COMPANY. BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE

This was one of my easiest moves to date, and I've moved all over about once every other year for 10 years! Unfortunately, I injured my knee and wasn't able to do much moving, but Moving With US was so quick, they moved me in less time than I had previously encountered (with me helping). The truck was huge and they had additional packing materials for my large glass desk and TV's. They are very responsive and will provide you with great service. I will be recommending them to all of the neighbors in my new community.

On a 1-10 scale with 10 a perfect score, Ground Force One Moving is an 11! Richard and his partner were professional, courteous, punctual, and performed flawlessly. They were hired to pick up and return a 350 lb. elliptical machine to a store. They protected the floor with blankets, carefully avoided hitting doorways, and placed it where the store manager requested. With confidence, I highly recommend this family owned and operated moving business for all your moving needs, small or large.

Evans made our entire move super easy. The flat rate provided ease of mind for us and we didn't have to worry about the cost billowing outside our budget. Evans and Davids treated our furniture like it was their own and helped us assemble everything as well. Will definitely use again and recommend to everyone we know!!

Gary and his team worked tirelessly to ensure that our move went smoothly. All of our belongings made it to GA from VA without any issues. When we discovered that we needed more things to go into storage, he made a second trip even though they were officially finished moving us. I have recommended GNG to my friends in the DMV who may need for his services. My family is very pleased.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
