I wanted to give my son an in-home cooking class certificate for his birthday. Chef Matt had one emailed to me within an hour of our arrangement. Because I was going to have my son and his wife over for lunch so I could give him the certificate, it occurred to me that I would have Chef Matt cater the lunch so my son and I would know in advance what capability Chef Matt provided. Within three days I had a menu in hand with a selection of 3 appetizers, 3 main courses, and 3 deserts. Matt personally brought my selection to my home, over 20 miles away, but he added Rosemary bread and two extra small gifts, his own bread and butter pickles and spicy peach ketchup. Matt was at my home at the exact time we had agreed upon and provided me with perfect instructions for heating the meal prior to serving. The meal was without doubt superb. It was the first time my sons and their wives actually went back for seconds. Chef Matt had cooked as directed for 6 but I had left overs for two more meals. As far as the price is concerned it can't be beat. I really didn't have to do anything but enjoy my time with my family. I highly recommend Chef Matt and know as long as you communicate your specific needs he will exceed them. I will certainly be using him again. Thank you so very much Chef Matt.

Jackie came in and gave us cooking lessons with a Thai flavor and we had a great time. The menu was well planned, the instructions were clear and Jackie was there to keep us out of trouble. Since there were five guys all squeezed together in the kitchen, it was interesting but we all had a great time. Jackie blended in with the group and we all laughed at the same jokes. Thanks for a great time!

I flew into town to plan my father's memorial. Mom wanted food delivered, set up, and kept tidy. We ordered from Wegman's and hired Chef Celestine. From the first contact with Sweet Bazil, staff were thorough professionals, confirming details and keeping phone appointments. Chef Celestine talked me through everything I should consider and I opted for her coffee tea station and sterno warmers, along with three extra hours of her day. At first I wondered what she would be doing the whole time, but was so glad I had Chef's helping hands. She washed and replenished, and repacked food, so that at the end, there was literally nothing for me to do! If I lived here, I would definitely find an event for her to actually cook for. But for our family gathering of 40, this Helping Hand service really lightened my load.

The cooking lesson was for my teen daughter. Mary was very accommodating. She was well prepared and very professional. She taught my daughter with patience and she made it fun for her. She taught her terminology and safety, as well as helped her to create a wonderful meal. My daughter will continue taking culinary classes with Mary and I would not hesitate to recommend her to family and friends.

I have been taking a series of in home cooking classes with Marilena. The food is simple and delicious and easy to do on my own. Most enjoyable is learning general cooking techniques that recipes don't teach you - knife skills, recipe improvisation and general rules of thumb when cooking.

Chef Matt is absolutely amazing! I have been using his personal chef services and I can honestly say that he has been a blessing in our life. I first learned about Chef Matt on an online community of moms in Old Town, Alexandria. Because I had a small baby and no time to cook, I decided to order our Thanksgiving meal from him. I was so happy I did – the food was absolutely fantastic and everyone at the dinner table raved about it. In fact, it was the best Thanksgiving meal that I have ever had. Since then I have been ordering from him on a regular basis. Chef Matt’s food is fresh, healthy and out-of-this-world delicious. His recipes are very diverse and incorporate a lot of international influences, which I love. Everyone in my home is so excited when we get the food from Chef Matt. I wish I knew about him long time ago, especially after we had our baby and struggled with finding the time to cook. I know that he teaches cooking classes and I hope that one day I will have the opportunity to learn how to cook amazing food directly from Chef Matt. I wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone looking for personal chef services!

Kristin's cooking classes are fantastic. She uses fresh, delicious ingredients in all of her meals and the meals are easy enough to do on a weeknight. My favorite thing about the classes (since I am not a cook) is that the recipes are very easy to follow. She doesn't use a million ingredients but the outcome is restaurant quality meals. The cooking classes are interactive so you really learn how to cook the meals first hand. I would highly recommend any cooking class with Kristin.

Chef Jess prepared a wonderfully delicious pescetarian dinner with a pan-Asian menu of 2 appetizers, main and salad. I did not use the on-site chef and waitstaff option so the delivery was on-time with easy instructions for re-heating. She was very responsive about food allergy as well. I highly recommend ALL of Chef Jess from service, menu planning, food, delivery, and follow-up!!!

Meetal arrived exactly at our appointed time, was warm and bubbly, but also down to business! She wanted us to learn a few specific dishes and techniques, smells and sights, and she pushed us to do so, while engaging in lively and fun chatter. She taught us three different dishes, AND cleaned up in 1 hour and 15 minutes!! Simply amazing. I would recommend Meetal to anyone trying to cater a dinner, hosting a cooking class, etc. She is fabulous!!

I am so excited about learning how to cook with Ellen. She is very professional and kind. During our consultation she asked me what I'd really like to learn and what things I didn't or couldn't have. She is willing to work her class set up around that as well. She has a great attitude and gives me hope that I'll be a great cook.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do private cooking lessons cost?

You can take private cooking classes to have fun, to learn a new skill, to improve your health, to bond with your partner, to enjoy a playful first date or to have a unique birthday party experience. Nationally the average cost of private cooking lessons ranges between $100 and $150. Prices can vary, depending on where you live, the type of cooking class you’re taking, the ingredients the chef provides, and the reputation of the chef. Cooking classes with Anthony Bourdain will clearly cost more than classes with a local restaurant owner. The number of people in the class will also affect the cost, with group lessons often priced per person to account for the cost of ingredients. For example, for group lessons, a brunch workshop may cost an average of $70 per person, a steak dinner with sides could cost an average of $80-$85 per person, and a sushi lesson could cost an average of $100 per person. Ingredients play a major role in cost, as the chef will pre-purchase the food you will be working with. Weekday classes will usually cost less than weekend classes.
