John and Atlantic Coast Contractors did an excellent job on the purchase and installation of our Heat pump/AC and furnace install. They never tried to sell us anything and listened to what we desired in our unit to make sure that we got what we felt comfortable with. John even talked us out of purchasing some more expensive features in our unit and explained why they were not necessary. Great job, timely, courteous, and reasonably priced! Would recommend to anyone!

Anthony Hardy installed my hot water heater the same day I called. He was very professional and he did an excellent job. He did not leave the job site until he checked and re-checked that every thing was working and no leaks were present. I am very satisfied and I would strongly recommend his services. I will continue to contact him in the future. Michelle R. Scott

Scott and crew were extremely professional and accommodating. In the midst of a heatwave, we still received prompt service and communication throughout the entire process of replacing our coil and condenser, installation of a new return, and the replacement of an existing duct. Highly recommend!

We chose Go Simple Energy (Airforce Heating & Cooling) to install our solar panels. This company is professional from the instant you contact them. The initial quote was approached with a focus on customer service. Jim McDowall (Vice President & Partner) and Ben Porter (Vice President of Design) were able to communicate key information to us in a way that we understood and we appreciated there was no assumption of expert knowledge on the subject matter. Ben was happy to get into technical details and provide us with thorough information (that we sincerely liked) throughout the entire process. We truly value the attention to detail they paid to our job (and our home) from the quote to the project completion. During installation days the crew working was polite and friendly as we continued to live our lives in our home. We never felt like leaving the home with them on the property was a mistake. They went above and beyond on our project several times and we really appreciate it. Airforce Heating & Cooling also helped us with our annual maintenance on our existing HVAC systems and their quality work continued. We can not express just how valuable it is to know that there are true professionals that offer such wonderful customer service on a home project.

I wanted a receptacle installed for my pool. I am an Engineer and 99% of all my work in my home I complete myself. This does save me money, but mostly it is because I take more PRIDE in my own work then other "Contractors" would. THIS WAS NOT THE CASE with Start to Finish. They customized every aspect of the job to tailor to my needs & wants. As they were working if they found an existing discrepancy with my home (built in 65) they notified me about it but did not try to push to add it to the bill or come back and they could "Hook me up." Absolutely PROFESSIONAL and if I need any work in the future that I may feel a little out of my realm for they will be the ONLY ones that I call. Jesse C.

The outside dryer vent, 25 ft up, was clogged making our dryer completely inefficient. Our handyman worked at that thing until it was all clear. Big chunks if debris including bold birds nest and the usual gobs of dryer lint. He was up to his shoulder inside that duct as well as using a snakelike grabber. Thorough, clean and efficient. Thank you. We will call on him again.

Room over the garage was not sufficiently cooling without the aid of a stand-alone air conditioner constantly running. Air Specialty Corp. replaced the existing ducting with larger ducting and ran that ducting in a more efficient manner in order to provide increased airflow to the room. They also added more insulation to the attic. The room is now significantly cooler. Andy and the whole Air Specialty crew did a wonderful job for us. I would recommend them to all my friends!

My Hvac unit has given me hell since hiring an incompetent company (Hvac warehouse) to install it a few years back but any-who fast forward to the present, I messaged Hutton Power & Light via yelp and asked if a technician could come by to check my unit (had zero air flow) I receive a response back in less than 10 minutes and a technician at my home an hour later ( on a Saturday evening) took about 45 minutes for the tech to diagnose the problem and provide a reasonably priced estimate for the cure. They returned about 2 days later to fix the issue and now I'm laying in bed enjoying this glorious air conditioning thanks to Joe!

Aire Serv did a stellar job on the install of a new air conditioner (heat pump? I don't remember, the tech said which, my minds just not all there) ducting, and an air handler (if i recall correctly) the tech was very professional, extremely courteous, walked me and my brother in law through every step he took and the reasoning behind it. He was very knowledgeable about how best to fix the issue. Since then the things been working great and any time there's a question or issue i can call them up and get a prompt answer (like forgetting to change from heat to cool on a warm day!) Overall i would (and have) recommend this company to family and friends whenever they have problems.

Jay is an exceptional professional. His manners are impeccable. He was timely and knew exactly how to install my new NEST thermostat. At $100, he provided a quote no one else could match. I originally called the NEST installers and they quoted $250. Jay provided excellent value. I highly recommend this young man.

I've been a customer of 7 Services for more years than I want to count; however, during all these years the services provided, heating, air conditioning, hot water heater and plumbing were found to be excellent and I had never had to recall the technician on any service provided. Appointments are answered on time and more often than not, early. Great company and I'm happy I chose 7 Services.

He was very honest and thorough with the pros and cons of each unit, both units were affordable priced (with no hidden or additional fees after install!!). Throughout installation and removal everything went as discussed and happened in a timely manner. We are so pleased with his service, I will definitely use his company again.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

      • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
      • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
      • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
      • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
        • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
      • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
        • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
      • Your home has humidity problems.
      • Your home has excessive dust.
        • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
      • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
        • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
      • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
        • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
