I teach vinyasa yoga, slow flow, chair yoga, yoga nidra, and laughing yoga. I am available for private/semi-private lessons, on-site group classes, and custom workshops. I respect and love that everyone comes to the mat from a different place and with different expectations. My hope is to help my students understand that yoga is about a relationship with themselves, about listening to their breath, and connecting with how they feel.

    I am a certified Rolfer, a licensed massage therapist and a certified Iyengar yoga instructor. Rolfing structural integration (SI) is a holistic, comprehensive method of hands-on therapy created by Ida P. Rolf to release and harmonize the entire body. SI aims to restore flexibility, improve posture and release chronic pain. It revitalizes your energy and leaves you feeling freer and more at ease in your body. It is similar to massage therapy in that you receive it on a table but the work is much deeper, the effects are lasting and your body will literally be reshaped. More than 50 years ago, Dr. Rolf recognized that the body is inherently a system of seamless networks of tissues rather than a collection of separate parts. These connective tissues surround, support and penetrate all of the muscles, bones, nerves and organs. SI works to reorganize this web-like complex of connective tissues reducing compensations, alleviating pain, and altering one's relationship with gravity. For yoga instruction, whether you're a yoga teacher who thinks your training was insufficient, a newbie who just wants to find out what all the hoopla has been about, or someone in between, I can assist you. I can help ensure you are not creating injuries or bad habits in your home practice or at your corner studio (where the instruction may not be great). I can aid in developing a home practice if you do not already have one. For those considering online yoga classes, you should know that chances of injury skyrocket without a knowledgeable teacher observing you three dimensionally. It's easy to complicate things and completely miss the mark. I can guide you toward advancing in flexibility, strength and focus from a holistic approach. However, if you would prefer to move toward a specific asana (yoga pose), I can guide you safely and effectively. If you're already teaching, I can bring clarity to any doubts or questions you may have about structurally sound alignment from basic to advanced asanas. I'll help you better see and feel misalignment and how to adjust them quickly, safely and effectively. When I adjust your pose, your body will feel, and your mind will know where strength and support come from in the particular asana and how to soften and lengthen in and around that. In this practice, you will not take yourself apart, but together we will build you up. We will work on creating a practice that brings balance, space, and stability to your structure. It takes more than 200- or 500-hour certification courses to teach yoga. It takes years of experience. I have been consistently practicing for 23 years (Sivananda, ashtanga, and Iyengar) and teaching for 15 years. I was apprentice to John Schumacher (senior Iyengar teacher) for 6 years. A Little More About Iyengar Yoga Training A candidate may apply to become an Iyengar instructor only after 3 years' study as well as developing a relationship with a certified Iyengar yoga teacher who agrees to become a mentoring teacher. After application, the candidate teaches exclusively in the Iyengar method for 2 years, all before the actual testing begins. In the assessment process itself, candidates are carefully observed and evaluated as they demonstrate asanas (poses) and pranayamas (breathwork) and as they teach a class of students. Many good teachers do not pass. I currently teach at the Viva Center in Dupont Circle on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Sunday AM's. All asanas, no matter how complex, are comprised of a set of interlocking basic principles. To master any asana is to correctly apply these principles, putting them into action through the medium of the living, breathing body. When performed correctly, the postures unlock and invigorate the body. Teaching you these principles is the unshakable core of my practice. A Little More About My Rolfing Training One of the main aspects of Rolfing structural integration (SI) is how to see disorder in a body and how to create order within that body. I studied SI initially to begin to develop how to see what a Rolfer sees and can feel into to the core of a body from the shape and contours on the surface. I am a graduate of the Rolf Institute of Structural Integration and The Institute for Structural Integration. I work diligently to restore and balance bodies that are achy and inflexible and tired and weighed down by gravity. In an organized body, there is more adaptability and less effort required to deal with the stresses of life. Athletes, office workers and yogis can all benefit from Rolfing, as it takes a keen eye to get a fix on various imbalances and their sources. This work can do amazing things for folks experiencing injuries (old and recent) and aftermath of vehicle accidents, neck pain and restricted movement, chronic back pain, thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS), carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), TMJ, joint pain or arthritis, migraine or headaches, restricted breathing, aftermath of any trauma or surgery as well as surgery avoidance, plantar fascitis and many other issues.     My relaxed and light-hearted demeanor while teaching or coaching puts clients at ease. I'm not perfect and I love my flaws. I think that level of comfort with myself helps those around me be comfortable as well - whether they're working to get into some contorted or challenging yoga pose, or opening up about their relationship with food and eating. I love that I get to spend every day interacting with a diversity of people and that it's my job to help them feel better - physically, mentally and emotionally. I take that responsibility very seriously. There's nothing that makes me happier than seeing people walk out of a class or walk away from a one-on-one session with me visibly more at ease - shoulders down, chest lifted, face relaxed and an easy smile across their face. It's so rewarding and reinforcing.

What do you love about your job?

Some of the many things I love about being a yoga teacher include seeing students grow, seeing their stress melt away during practice, seeing their excitement when they get into a new pose, and getting a hug because I help brighten a student’s day. My students are a source of inspiration and encourage me to be a better teacher. I love that there is always something new to learn and the opportunity to share the new things with my students. I love being able to create a space where someone can let go of their day and connect with themselves. I love the community I am part of and the support we provide each other.

What or who inspired you to start your own business?

I enjoy so many benefits of yoga and I wanted to help others do the same. I took a yoga teacher training to learn more about yoga and to deepen my own practice. I also wanted the tools to share my love of yoga with others. Teaching yoga is a new and exciting part of my journey. Seeing how yoga benefits my students' lives inspires me to continue to learn and grow my business.
