Allow me to set the scene. I own a very pretty lilac crocheted dress that I've had for years and I absolutely love it! One day a few months ago, out of sheer laziness, I decided to clean the dress in the washing machine instead of washing it out by hand as the instructions very plainly say. When I opened the door to the washer after the last cycle was complete, I pulled out the horribly mangled lilac mess you see pictured below. Needless to say, I was devastated. How could I have been so careless with my beloved dress?! With very little optimism, I searched the internet for someone who could repair crocheted items. I stumbled across the Thumbtack site and found Scarlett. Scarlett had one glowing review after another. It was apparent that she was a master at her craft. I didn't have a doubt in my mind those reviews were true. But given the condition of my dress, I didn't even think Scarlett had the ability to save it. In my mind, no one could fix that dress. It was impossible. But I still decided to give her a chance. I brought the dress to her, she looked it over. She indicated unhesitatingly that she could fix it. I, of course, was very doubtful but I appreciated her effort to try and fix my dress nonetheless. A couple months later, I hear from Scarlett. "Your dress is ready" she says. She explains that it took a little longer than usual to finish because she had a hard time finding the exact thread to match the rest of my dress. I made arrangements to pick up the dress. En route, I wonder how the dress will look but I have no expectations. Again, I'm just appreciative for her efforts to take on the seemingly (operative word) impossible task of salvaging my dress. As I walk into Scarlett's apartment, she goes to retrieve my dress. When she unfolds it and holds it up before me, I can not believe my eyes. MY DRESS LOOKS JUST AS IT DID THE DAY I BOUGHT IT!!! Scarlett had taken the mangled mess that I was certain could NEVER be repaired and transformed it back into the dress that I'd become so fond of! I know that my review is very long but I deemed it necessary to say all of this in order for people to fully understand just how completely AMAZING Scarlett is. All the reviews that praise her work - they're all true. Scarlett is phenomenal at what she does and I would recommend her in a heartbeat. I will definitely be using her again for my future alteration, sewing needs. In addition to being good at what she does, she is also very pleasant to deal with. By all means - enlist Scarlett for your alteration/sewing needs. I promise that you won't be sorry.
My daughter, Kaylie, has been taking private sewing lessons from Ama for the past several weeks now and really enjoys it. Ama has been a terrific teacher. My daughter is a beginner, having never sewn before. But Ama is patient and and very encouraging, and Kaylie is learning a lot! Thank you Ama!
I had taken lessons with Valerie at a sewing studio in DC, which I loved. Once the studio closed I knew I wanted to continue to learn with Valerie. She is an amazing sewing instructor, and is extremely patient. Her hours are flexible, and she arrived right on time (actually, minutes early) to our at-home private lessons. I cant wait to schedule another lesson.
I had a wonderful experience learning with Simpson Creative Designs. She is patient, very knowledgeable and has an enjoyable teaching style. My daughters even took a lesson with her, she is adept at teaching adults and children alike. Highly recommended!
She was able to do the impossible. Completing adjustments on a pageant dress in less than 24 hours was amazing! I look forward to working with her again.
She is great, hire with confidence. Can't wait to have her come back. We will be using all three skills, started with sewing. She will be teaching my daughter crochet, and my husband knitting. Very excited, and my sewing lessons are going great!
I had an intermediate level sewing class with Ms. Smith in April 2016. In my case, I wanted to learn how to tailor Butterick/McCalls' patterns (i.e., button-down shirts) to better fit me. Ms. Smith was very knowledgeable and patient in showing me what to do step-by-step and at my own pace. As a result, my sewing knowledge just got kicked up several levels in one 2-hour session. If you are looking for a sewing teacher (at affordable rates) for any level in the D.C. area, I would highly recommend her services. I plan to come back for more lessons in the future.
Denis is an outstanding tailor. I came to him with an idea for a 17th century dress that I have seen in a museum (Silver Tissue Dress) and he immediately showed me how it can be made and what it will look like, he designed and decorated it and it looks as if it came from the court of Lois XIV. The dress is beautiful, the tailoring impeccable and the pleats he did are meticulous. I felt like a princess wearing it at the Venice carnival this year. I definitely recommend him and will contact him for future costume events. He not only has the skill to sew well but he is a great designer as well. Thank you!

I'm a costume designer by trade, but I have tutored writers with learning challenges for many years as well as those writing English as a second language. I am not a copy editor, please do not ask me to proofread. I also can teach fashion drawing, pattern making, sewing, and design.
I have received training and much practice in the older couture traditions of fine workmanship. I know things that are no longer taught.
