I don't usually write reviews. Even if I'm delighted with a product or a service, I forget or get distracted. This is worth the review. The team came in with a FORCE - like a galestorm of zen and organization. I knew that I was stressed due to the state of my apartment, but I didn't even realise how stressed until I came home after a week away and just felt so calm in my apartment. The ladies balanced exactly the right amount of understanding sentiment and leading me towards donating or trashing things that were just taking up space. Highly recommended if you need a serious reset on your abode.

Working with Anne on my redesigning my home has been absolutely wonderful! She is certainly creative and passionate about what she does. She is enthusiastic, detail orientated, and dependable. She took the time to understand my family's style, as well as what would make sense (and be functional!) in a 5 person household. She took several pieces of traditional furniture we already owned and incorporated them with new modern pieces to create a fresh and inviting look throughout my home. She helped us select a color palette, furniture, and decor based on my eclectic style. As an added bonus, which allowed us to stay under budget, she was able to find reasonably priced furniture and accessories, and to create framed and matted artwork, based on our family's interests. She focused on creating a home that was beautiful, personal, and best of all, affordable! Anne was wonderful and I will definitely be recommending her to everyone I know, as well as using her in any future projects! A+++

Working with Monique was so easy. She was able to pull in my likes and really use every area of my apartment with purpose. The ease in getting from the beginning to the end was so exciting, from looking through lots of design ideas, to viewing her professional layout of my apartment, with the pieces that would be purchased, and then finally the big reveal. I am excited every time I walk into my new space, and I couldn't be happier with my decision to work with Monique and Duarte Decor.

Leslie helped me refresh my 13-year-old home with particular attention to the family room. It is large with lots of big windows overlooking a lake. I wanted to update the colors and furnishings, leaving the outdoor scene as the focal point. She was a huge help in selecting colors and fabrics and giving suggestions. Leslie recommended a faux paint technique to replace wallpaper in the kitchen. I had mixed feelings about a faux paint finish but the "artist" Leslie recommended made a sample board that was exactly what I had pictured. My kitchen looks wonderful! I would highly recommend Leslie Watson Leake to anyone no matter how large or small their project. It was great working with her!

Honest, ethical, strong work ethic, affordable, these are the adjectives I'd use to describe Julie Savoye. Her ideas are spot on, and her color suggestions worked out perfectly in several rooms in my home. I guarantee your results will be just as favorable to you

Moving into my first place, I wanted a space that reflected by personal style but was still functional. I wasn't even sure what my "style" was, however. Leizel created a space that I LOVE spending time in and entertaining in by taking the time to get to know what I liked and what I wanted to feel when I looked at the place. She has natural talent that makes her worth so much more than she charges! My apartment complex manager asked if she could photograph my apartment for promotional material!

Suzanne helped me redecorate my home using my own furnishings and objects together with a little bit of very strategic painting, and the results were spectacular! I couldn't believe the difference her creative positioning and use of our own "stuff" made in transforming the space, opening it up, and highlighting certain beautiful pieces that were barely noticed before. She also helped me remodel our master bathroom which came out great--and even helped me pick new paint and countertops for my office which turned out to be just perfect. I would highly recommend her for her experience, creativity, talent, and pleasant demeanor. She's a pleasure to work with and completely reliable/on time/energetic..

Peggy is not your average decorator! She is exceptional! I have worked with a number of others and here's how she's different: she decorates in your style, not hers - she is a detail person and thinks of every possible thing needed to complete a look - she coordinates and follows up with every person needed to finish a job (upholsterers, carpenters, painters, seamstresses) and keeps you informed of where things stand with them - she has many connections and knows who's best in any area - she stays withing a budget. AND she has a delightful personality, so working with her is a joy.

It is so amazing how out of my frustration, I began to make clothing for woman of all sizes and shapes aiming to bring the vintage looks of the seventies and eighties back to the forefront. I began to design pieces that aimed to bring out class, eloquence, with designs and styles that will guarantee to turn heads! After all that's what fashion is all about! We also sell products from other companies that seek to help ladies put their best foot forward! Ladies we complain about clothing so much because as clothing evolved many of the vintage functions were also left behind and now clothing is sized wrong and it doesn't accentuate the positives. In fact this new age thinking of tight is right zones in on the many flaws that yesteryear designs tried to cover up. As head stylist it is my job to teach you how to make every outfit your own. I enjoy helping people find their inner fashionista and I look forward to working with each and every one of you.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
