Katie is wonderful. She really knows what she's talking about, and how to help your animal. Even just a hour with her has changed our outlook on how to communicate with my dog and she has given us hope again! This was only our first session too! We are so happy we can make our dogs life AND our life a better one together now thanks to Katie.

I have known Mr.Meyers for about 6-7 years now. I knew him before he was a part of Animal Motel's staff. His pride and joy had always been animals, and he has most experience with dogs. The way he cares for animals is unlike anything else. I have worked with Mr.Meyers on various types of endeavors over the years, and I will say that caring for animals lights his eyes up an warms his heart up like no other. Ever since he had the honor of running Animal Motel, Mr.Meyers was in his element, and that translates to animals loving him. Under his wing, I ever seen so many dogs and cats turn their lives around. The owners are always happy. It's miraculous everytime. I would recommend Animal Motel for any and all pet-owners. Mr.Meyers works tirelessly no matter what any pet or stray goes through. He never gives up, and all creatures are better off because of it.

Andrea came to my house to train my Dog, Loki. She was excellent! She observed his negative behaviors and gave me easy and EFFECTIVE ways to deflect his attention onto something more positive. We saw Andrea on Friday, 2/02/18 @ 9am and she was here for a hour. I've been using all of the techniques she taught me and although it's only been over 40 hours since she visited, Loki is already showing excellent improvement. She even called me back later Friday afternoon, to say she researched one of his more unusual behaviors and gave she gave me additional instructions for training Loki regarding this specific issue. I highly recommend Andrea from Belton Entertainment, she understands Dogs, what drives them and how to handle/control those behaviors. Good Luck!

Working with Joe on the advanced obedience of my 9-month old puppy has been an incredible experience! Joe is so positive in his interactions with Willow, and he stresses that obedience is really about building her confidence. Not only is Willow incredibly responsive and controlled in her commands now, but her overall demeanor has changed. After being a timid puppy, she is becoming confident, calm, and the kind of dog that other people tell us they wish they had. Joe is also knowledgeable about canines outside of the training given, and was able to give us pointers on issues like Willow's tendency to get carsick. He really provides an experience that helps you understand your dog on a deeper level, and I strongly recommend him to anyone looking for any level of training.

I hired Kathryn Joal to provide care for my dogs and chickens for two separate weekends. I received her name through a referral from my veterinarian's office. Her services are top notch. She was professional, accommodating and sensitive to the animals' needs. Kathryn was presented with challenges involving caring for my dogs, as two of them have behaviors that can be difficult to manage; one refuses to come back in the house when let out into the fenced yard and the other is very frightened of new people. Kathryn was able to follow specific instructions in order to address these issues and successfully provide loving care for my dogs. I appreciated the following: texted updates after each visit; taking in our mail without having to be asked; providing feedback on dogs' behaviors and her interventions; when second visit was cut short due to our early return she initiated refund of payment promptly. I trust her with my animals because she exhibits an ability to be sensitive to their needs while still being dependable and reliable.

We have two rescue pups, who are 'sensitive' to say the least. We have been asking Bentie to keep them for over a year after meeting her through a mutual friend. Bentie is our favorite dog (and house) sitter that we have ever had! She is truly an animal lover and it really shines when she is around the pups. Even when we ask her to come to the house and let them out really quick, Bentie goes the extra mile and will spend an hour or more with them talking and playing. When she visits the house they play in the yard, go for walks or to the river, and she even brushes our 'major shedder' often. Our dogs love when she comes and we feel at ease whenever they are home with her. She has been great for quick walks/ feedings, as well as weekend or week long vacations. My wife and I really cannot reccomend Bentie highly enough!

Janet is a miracle worker. She has helped me (in my home) for 18 months with a pit bull (rescue) that was globally terrified. This was a dog that didn't leave the dressing room for a year. She was able to accomplish things with the dog that I wouldn't have thought possible. (Ex. Getting the dog to walk calmly into the house instead of crashing into the door in her frenzy to get in). Helping me teach my dog to relieve herself outside. She also was able to train dog #2 (who I got to help with the pit bull), to go in a crate - which she had never before used - in just a few minutes. I would give her the highest possible rating....beyond excellent. She is truly outstanding. She is soooo knowledgeable - about why dogs do what they do, what it means, and how to handle it. Yes - she went way above and beyond. Ex: spending 45 minutes on the phone with me one night when I was trying to decide whether or not to keep the dog. Enlisting the help of a vet behavior specialist in Texas in determining what meds would help (which one, dosage, etc.) She was always on time, and her work was of the highest quality. Not a thing went wrong. She could not possibly do better.

Stephanie is very good at what she does!!! She is a true animal lover and it's obvious when she talks about all of her bully breed rescues turned therapy dogs! She expects them to behave well and can train them to do so, but she treats them like their people as in always makes sure they are provided for: they always have food and water, are emotionally and physically sound, and happy even away from their owners. Highly recommended !

Merissa has helped me with the training of several of my dogs! Her knowledge of dog training and behavior are outstanding, and she has a way of presenting that knowledge that makes it interesting, relatable, and useful, no matter what topic or trick she's teaching. It's clear that she loves working with dogs and their people, and I can't recommend her highly enough.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
