My wife and I unfortunately hired another contractor to remodel our main bathroom. We should have known it was going to be a nightmare when he cashed our deposit check the same day and dodged our calls and texts for days before attempting to remodel our bathroom. After waiting patiently for 4 days to have a toilet installed and going without a vanity and sink for 9 days, we fired him. Thankfully, we found thumbtack's website and even more thankful we found Tony Tan the Handyman!!!!! Tony came out the same day we contacted him. He provided us an extremely reasonable quote to finish the work our previous contractor started, fixed the other contractor's mistakes, and even added on extra work we never thought we'd be able to afford. Tony offered to come start working the next day, but unfortunately we couldn't miss work on such short notice. He gladly offered to come that Saturday and fix our bathroom. Tony showed up on Saturday as promised, and in a matter of a few short hours all of the mistakes from the previous contractor were fixed, our "wish list" items were completed, and our bathroom was done. It's all that we'd hoped it would be and more. Tony and his team were polite, respectful of our home, and even cleaned up after themselves. Dealing with them was an A+++++ experience. We live in an older home and will be calling on Tony to help with all of our future home improvement projects.

Slava did an excellent job remodeling our bathroom. We are very happy with the quality of his work. Slava demolished the old bathtub and all of flooring as well as removed the old vanity sink. He built out a shower stall including a bench and a shelf. We chose small tile and Slava installed each one perfectly. Upon completion of his work, a shower door installer measured the shower stall for door installation; he said that tile was installed flawlessly and was completely leveled which made it easier for the shower door installation. All in all, we are very very happy with our new bathroom.

One Stop Renovation is the way to go. I would recommend Nilson and his team. We interviewed three contractors. All three were sound businesses and good initial meetings, however Nilson provided a competitive bid and we meshed well with his and his partner. One Stop Renovations and his subcontractors completed a remodel of our kitchen, two bathrooms, flooring and painting within 40 days. They were flexible to some changes we made to fixtures selections. I would recommend them to anyone. The following comments are things that I think made our process smothering. - we hauled debris to help offset costs - we checked in most every day to see progress - the house is near a home improvement store for those last minute needs - we handled material costs

Absolutely amazing experience. It's hard to put into one short review how incredible Jason and his team are. Both he and Oliver went above and beyond to help me surprise my wife on her birthday with a bathroom remodel. Who would have though you could strip wallpaper, prep drywall, prime, paint, install plumbing, put in fixtures and help with everything else that goes into a bathroom remodel in one day? Well these guys made it happen and had smiles on their faces the whole time. You can really tell they love what they do and man do they do it well. Jason was extremely responsive throughout the process, and offered me his advice on so many things, even offered all of his tools I needed for things like sanding the cabinets and hanging mirrors and fixtures. If you are looking for any sort of handymen around the house or local business DO NOT HESITATE to contact Jason, this guy knows his stuff and is very good at what he does. I can't say enough how happy I was working with HHH. Thanks again Jason!

Jorge has completed numerous projects for me as I update and renovate my home. He is prompt, courteous, has assistance from his wife and son, is trustworthy, reasonable, and efficient. Most importantly he is honest. He first assesses the project, then sends a written estimate via email, gives a starting date, and cleans up after he completes each task. He buys the materials and brings them to the job. He saves me worry and time. He has completed the following projects for me: 1. Repaired drywall where I had had a water leak and painted the ceiling. 2. Painted all of my wood trim and turned it white. (Totally changed the brightness of the rooms). Has painted 5 rooms. 3. Removed wall paper and painted walls in a 2 story foyer. (his wife Monica cuts paint like no one I have ever known). 4. Removed and painted shutters and rebuilt several to avoid the cost of having custom wooden shutters made. (Very impressive work) 5. Removed a set of brick steps and replaced with new, "fake" wood steps, installed a railing. Rebuilt steps in my garage and installed a handrail. 6. Removed chipped paint and touched up white trim on the exterior ( house has 20 windows on the front). 7. Hung a double rear door that was custom made and has windows above it. 8. Built columns, hung a swing, painted porch ceiling... I have probably forgotten some projects. He has a wonderful work ethic and is pleasant. I could include photos, but I do not know how to do that!

David and Vicki Barrett and their son have helped us with numerous home renovation projects over the years. They have always been extremely professional and even more importantly very trustworthy. We have had some bad experiences with contractors in the past, and the Barretts have restored our faith in honest, qualified, and capable contractors. The quality of their work is exceptional, and they are always a pleasure to work with. David is a master carpenter - He has built us beautiful custom cabinetry in our family room, powder room, and room over our garage. His work has held up extremely well to the rigors of daily family life! An added bonus - both David and Vicki are very personable and flexible and so we always look forward to working with them when it comes time to start the next renovation project. We would highly recommend David Barrett and Son for any of your home renovation/ building needs!

I have worked with Coastal Contracting several times for additions to my home. They have remodeled both my kitchen and my bathroom. I have to say that Coastal Contracting has been the most pleasant, stress free and professional company I have ever worked with. They have very competitive prices and did exactly what I wanted them to do on time. I couldn't recommend a better company than Coastal Contracting.

Our experience during the construction process was extremely pleasant. Kirk and his sub contractors were very professional, paid close attention to detail and shared our enthusiasm for our project. Kirk's price was so accurate that we did not go over budget which allowed us to complete other projects within the existing house. He and his subs participated in helping us complete other projects within the existing house and finished the addition ahead of schedule. I cannot say enough good things about the work that he and his subs did. We were very pleased and would certainly recommend him. I don't think the experience could be improved; unless I had won the addition and the renovations and gotten the privilege to work with him in some sort of home improvement sweepstakes! If you need an addition added or need home improvements done you owe it to yourself and your Home to hire Aikey's Home Improvements!.

Richmond Rebuilders did a fabulous job for us. We completely remodeled a kitchen, living area, and a few other small updates. David Clark and his team completed the work as proposed and we could not be happier. If you are looking to hire a contractor that: 1. Does quality work in a timely fashion. 2. Is responsive and very easy to deal with. 3. Understands budgets & timelines 4. Makes you feel at ease that your project is in good hands. Than you need to work with Richmond Rebuilders. From start to finish, we were very happy with our decision to work with David.

Hello I'm actually not knowing where to start: 1rst of all this guy actually showed up not on time but 10 minutes early. ( that's something completely new I'm used to 1-2 hours late) He remodeled my bathroom walls, sink, toilet and for no additional cost fixed the bottom beam of the framing because of years of our toilet leaking. this dude is awesome. I'm more than happy with the work, the price, the can and will do attitude. He told me he can organize my garage for me only 3 letters can describe the outcome (OMG) it looked like something from the HG channel. His work is nothing short of impressive. After my wife and I save some pennies we'll have more work for him.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
