I hired Tony Tan to completely renovate a small bathroom. It involved removing everything in the room (down to the beams and starting new.....removing tub, creating easier to enter shower, re-tiling, new vanity, toilet, shelves and fixtures. I also hired him to replace my air conditioner (outdoor component/compressor) for central air unit. The inside heating unit did not require replacement. The living area and a hallway were repainted following the bathroom remodeling. As a surprise to me, Tony installed a new ceiling fan (with dimmer light and remote) in my living area. A number of miscellaneous repairs such as installing blinds, fixing doorbell, replacing a fallen brick and a segment of siding that had worked lose, installing kitchen lights etc., were all completed as part of the overall project. I have asked for estimates on building a deck and replacing roofing on a shed......plan to use Tony and his crew to have this work done a bit later. Tony bases his prices on the amount of labor he expects a job to require, and includes prices for contractor grade paint, supplies etc. If you choose to upgrade on tile, fixtures, floors etc. you get the extra charge. If you want to go to Habitat and get surplus items at a reduced charge (I bet he'd use those to help you economise), although I didn't actually ask. He's just the kind of guy who listens to what you say you want, tries to find reasonable options that work for you, and does his best to make it happen, while earning a fair income. I hired in early March 2017, expecting the work to be completed while I was vacationing with my family the second week of April. Tony sent pictures or videos of the work done each day. He texted when his people were in the house and when they left for the day. The bathroom project had a firm beginning and ending date and deadlines were met. My only suggestion for improvement would be this: set a deadline for when the total project will be finished. The weather affected the timeliness of my fence repair, and my very demanding work schedule added some challenges. Also, Tony works on multiple jobs simultaneously and this means big jobs can become the priority and the finishing of smaller tasks can be postponed a little longer than is necessary. Still, I am very pleased with the improvements to my property and plan to hire for future projects.

I scheduled with Aire Serv after having a home inspection and needing to fix a temperature differential. I really appreciated that they were able to make their schedule fit with mine. Andrew was actually early for the appointment so there was no waiting around. He was extremely nice and professional. He looked at my system, answered my questions, and had my system cooling properly in no time for a reasonable price. He even provided pictures with my invoice to give to the home inspector. Would definitely do business with them again! Thanks Andrew! And thank you Aire Serv!

White Glove Plumbing installed a new air conditioning condenser for me. Other a/c companies only wanted to replace the entire system. White Glove fixed what was broken which costed much less then replacing the entire system. The technician was efficient, professional, and the price was very reasonable. I would recommend them to anyone.

The service provided by Fresh Air is always professional, courteous and outstanding! I've used them several times throughout the years and will highly recommend them to anyone who needs a heating/air conditioning company. Most recently, I had called Josh at Fresh Air for a slight emergency. My unit had a fan that went bad the night before family was arriving from out of town, and just happened to be the week where it was scorching hot outside!! I was so stressed out. I waited until the morning to call him and he came out that same day and had my unit fixed before our family arrived! I can't even begin to say how appreciative I was. This is why I will never have a need to find any other company. Fresh Air is the bomb! Please give them a call and let them help you too!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

    What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

    • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
    • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
    • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
    • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
      • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
    • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
      • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
    • Your home has humidity problems.
    • Your home has excessive dust.
      • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
    • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
      • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
    • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
      • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
