Posh Pet Training has been a life saver in my home! Paula has helped us understand our cat's behavior and we are on our way to quelling the aggressive behavior one of our cats is expressing upon the new kitten. She is kind, funny, and really spends the time needed to get to the root of the issue. I'm so glad I've hired her! She really loves every animal in your home and wants everyone to live in harmony (humans and pets alike!) I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for an experienced, knowledgeable, friendly trainer!

Ali is absolutely amazing. We called her last minute as we prepared to head out of town for Labor Day. She came over that evening, met with us for an hour and a half and educated us in animal behavior and appropriate food selections. She sent pictures and videos each day she came over and even provided a detailed update regarding our cat's behavior, food consumption and other details. It made us feel so comfortable with our choice. We already have her scheduled to watch Dax in November. We could not be happier and on top of that, she has a GREAT personality. Very sweet and educated about the animal world.

I could not ask for a better groomer. She opened her door with arms out to greet my yorkies. My oldest Yorkie is a little shy and showed it to Christina. She got down to Lucy's level and spoke to her having Lucy trusting her in minutes. All three Yorkies were a little upset to see us leave but again Christina sat with them talking and petting all three. When we arrived to pick them up she met us at the door with all three yorkies in her arms. They was glad to see us but would run back to her when she spoke to them. They hair cuts was exactly what we asked her to do. They were all so very pretty (and they knew it). I will continue to use Christina for she showed me the love she has for animals and how she could love your animals as if they were her own. Happy Yorkie Owner.

I love Lesa! She has made such a drastic difference in my dog's behavior and changed our family life for the better. Just months ago, I was overwhelmed with my dog's aggressive ways; now, my husband even says our Whiskey is a completely different dog! She is truly gifted at what she does!

Erica provides a wonderful service. She is an animal lover and takes the extra time and effort to make sure that our two "boys" are happy, fed, and content. It is such secure feeling to be able to leave town and know that they will be well-attended to!

"For a couple of years Cindy cared for our dear pet cat and we can't speak highly enough of the devoted care and attention provided the animal. During a significant part of the care our pet was quite sick and required special care, including subcutaneous fluids, and Cindy and her colleagues were marvelous in providing this additional care. Further, we particularly liked the way Cindy documented all the visits, feeding and care, which gave us a complete summary of what occurred during our absence. It provided an enormous sense of comfort. We recommend her highly. Michael and Susan

Dawn has provided pet sitting services for me for over 6 years. I am very pleased with her services and recommend her highly. I have a large number of animals - feral cats, indoor and outdoor cats and dogs with different diets, meds and needs which she willingly and competently accommodated. I am happy to provide a reference to potential customers.

Caitlin is the best! She is dependable, reliable, caring, and great with animals! She also treats your home as her own. Love the special services she provides. The last time we used her, we were away for about 10 days and we didn't have to worry about our home or animals! We will never use another person/company to watch our home and animals.

Kelly is the most fantastic dog sitter around, hands down! The amount of love that she has for the dogs is matched only by their owners. When I need her to check-in on my dog, I am always 110% confident that she will treat my fur baby with nothing but love and kindness. I have no worries when Kelly visits Vixey, I always receive pictures and texts on how the visit went. She goes above and beyond all expectations I have ever had for a dog walker! Kelly sets the bar that I will hold all others to; she's kind, honest, and truly loves the animals. You won't regret choosing her to watch your babies!

Went out of town for 2 weeks. Chris took very good care of my 3 dogs. He sent me videos of them playing all the time. Pictures of them sleeping. And basically let me know how they were doing daily. It's apparent he has a heart for animals. I have and trusted him many times with them and will continue to in the future.

Jan is an animal lover extraordinaire! She has cared for my dog for many years from pet sitting during the day to overnight stays for weeks at a time. I have to be able to trust someone with my dog, as he has a severe heart condition that requires different medications at different times of the day. He also needs to be kept in a calm environment, as too much excitement causes him to have cardiac "episodes." I wouldn't trust my dog with anyone else but Jan because I can count on her to shower my little guy with lots of love and feel confident he is going to receive the extra special care he requires due to his medical condition. I can't say enough nice things about Jan, as her love for animals shines through in everything she does for all of the creatures in her life!

I am very trustworthy. I have experience with children and animals around three years to be exact. I always try to meet every standard and then some. I work very hard. I'm currently attending high school in the fall of this year. I plan to save my money and put it in a college tuition for my future.

I can take care of dogs and cats or just any of your pet. I can walk them, bath them, exercise them and feed them. I clean shelters, bedding cages. I can take them to the doctor's appointment if needed, etc.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
