Very professional and fair prices. Amlak was hired to design and remodel our beach house interior in VA beach and it took them less than a week to complete the major remodel. They went way above and beyond. I would definitely recommend using them.

I worked with Lubbi Saed, who arrived right on time and got right to work with me. She listened and really heard me, understood immediately exactly what I'm trying to achieve, and made excellent suggestions. She is knowledgeable and professional, and offered before I even asked that home design is her passion and loves to help clients feel comfortable, uplifted and inspired in their homes. She exceeded my expectations and I'm thrilled that I found this company.

The Help Squad was called in at the last minute to complete the interior design of a new construction single family home. Their dedication to this job and their eye for detail proved to be amazing. The interior of this new home was absolutely gorgeous and awe inspiring. They were also able to keep the project under budget. Nothing but great service from the Help Squad!

My experience with Durante Decor was great. This was my first time working with an interior designer. And prior, my only experience with interior design came from watching a lot of HGTV. I was a bit apprehensive about the process and did not know what to expect. I also had an extremely firm budget which added to the anxiety. I had lofty goals on a very REAL budget. I put a few feelers out and reached out to a number of firms and quickly realized that finding a designer was going to be tough. I was met with a lot of "your budget is too small" or "the firm is unable to take on new jobs". Then, I was contacted by designer Monique from Durante Decor...after one conversation with her "I knew" that I had found my designer. Her energy aligned with mine and she seemed genuinely interested in helping me achieve my design goals. She and members of the firm were warm, courteous, patient and professional. They didn't treat me as a "small" job but gave quality time and attention to my project. Monique met with me to understand my vision and was able to provide a number of options that worked for me and my budget. She guided me through the process step by step. There were no surprises. She helped to take the fear out of the unknown and I was able to focus on bringing my design concepts to life. I definitely had a great experience working with Durante Decor and look forward to working with them on future projects. I was very pleased with the final result.

Wow...what can I say about Deanna Bloomer. True Professional. On a moments notice she accommodated some clients who were here for just a few days and she was amazing!! She has the innate ability to quickly connect with a client, understand their needs and deliver options to suit their design concept. Deanna Bloomer is someone I would highly recommend.

Let's talk about Brandon. Not only did he take the time to answer every question I had, but he listened to requests I had as well. He responded to me quickly and kept me up to date on where he was on the project. At some point, I wanted to change the steps he had done for me. [Not his fault, it was originally my design and I changed it on him well after the fact.] he not only helped me figure out how to get the design I wanted to work, but was VERY fair on the price. I had an OCD moment and wanted some posts centered and when I told him, he told me he figured I may want that and had already thought about how he would change then so it would be nothing to do. Part way through the project, my husband hired some guys to drop off wood at our house. These guys DUMPED bolder size tree trunks taller then my car in my driveway and left! Wouldn't come back to cut them and we had no way to do it! Brandon came to my rescue and rented a machine to cut them up for my husband and even stacked them for us. He even cleaned up the front yard for us too. The deck for the front and back are now done and beautifully completed. It was a pure board base with a TREX railing. Thank you Brandon for all your hard work! We hope to work with you again soon!

I utilized Matt's services when I was selling my home. While I thought I had done a good job decorating and staging the house for a quick sale, Matt came in behind me and took the staging/decorating to a much higher level. My house sold in 3 days, full asking price, and I have to attribute much of that to Matt's work. I have since used Matt for some design work and decoration for my new house and couldn't be happier with how he has transformed the space(s) into what I envisioned.

Peggy is not your average decorator! She is exceptional! I have worked with a number of others and here's how she's different: she decorates in your style, not hers - she is a detail person and thinks of every possible thing needed to complete a look - she coordinates and follows up with every person needed to finish a job (upholsterers, carpenters, painters, seamstresses) and keeps you informed of where things stand with them - she has many connections and knows who's best in any area - she stays withing a budget. AND she has a delightful personality, so working with her is a joy.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
