Removal of existing landscape, installation of new landscape in front and back of property, drainage control for gutter down spouts and HVAC condensation lines, installation of approximately 700 sq ft stone paver patio with sitting wall and lighting, installation of 3500 sq ft of fescue sod. From the outset, we were impressed. Scott and Kelly made 3 different trips to our home to discuss the project, with the caveat that we kept adding to the list. No problems with getting in touch with Kelly or Scott, kept us in the loop the whole way through. Projected was completed, as detailed, in 4.5 long days. What a change. The patio, the landscape choices really changed our property. All was clean at the end of the project. I would recommend Woodland Outdoors.

I hired Rob Altman for a landscape job that involved removing over 200 feet of old rotted fence, removing bushes, all brush and a considerable amount of trash that had been compiled for over twenty years, Rob removed the fence cleared all the bushes and brush and got a bobcat and removed all trash and debris and graded the yard so rain water would flow properly now the land look like it is part of a park minus the grass. Rob even removed the carpet and pads in the house and all this for a reasonable fair price. He kept me abreast of the progress of the work so that there would be no suprises at the end. He finished the job for the amount he quoted me. He is a good man and a most reliable worker. If you want a good job done / CALL - Rob Altman.

I had Steve plan and install a landscape design for the small curbside area in front of my house. The job included digging up and removing old plants and replacing the area with new greenery in accordance with the plan designed by Steve. Steve was professional and performed the job satisfactorily. The landscaping is still too new to appreciate it's ultimate beauty, however, I was satisfied with the new installation. After completion of the landscaping project, I was advised that Steve also performed Power Washing of homes and decks. I had Steve return to power wash both my house and deck. If you are looking for a friendly professional who can be relied on to complete your projects professionally, in a timely manner, and at a reasonable cost, I recommend that you give this company "Personal Touch Landscaping" a call.

Our landscaping needed help and Paul provided the necessary help for our walkway and flower bed. It looks great and so far has been very easy to maintain. I have a "black thumb" when it comes to gardening, but since having the landscape work initially provided, I now enjoy tending the flower beds. Thank you!

I am in love with our new landscaping. Johnathan came in and walked through with us about the different options and sent us options to choose from. He also chose all of the flowers based on what our vision was and hit it on the spot. Him and his team are professional, hard working & we would hire again in a heart beat. They transformed a 25 year landscaping (from when house was Built) to a modern style. Thanks Johnathan for making the exterior of our home have curb appeal.

Cannot be happier with my experience. Stephen was very professional and did an outstanding job replacing sod in my front/side yard. Cut up, removed, and hauled away old sod on day one and laid new sod on day 2/3. I had the ugliest yard in the cul de sac and now have the nicest. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for sod or landscaping. He will be hired on my next project of installing a patio in my backyard.

Connor and horizon grounds did a wonderful job installing a paver patio around my pool and updating the backyard landscaping. Connor estimated the job would take a week to 10 days and they were in and out in 6 days and even worked the weekend! Very professional company that I would highly recommend.

Chris and his team did such a great job on my rental property that I immediately retained his landscape design and lawn maintenance services for my residence. Since then he has redesigned my entire yard, installed sod and provided irrigation repair. He installed much needed shrubbery and trees specific to my homes design while taking into consideration environmental factors to ensure the longevity and perennial beauty he created. He and his team provide weekly lawn maintenance including tree trimming, mulch and weed control. They provide seeding and customized fertilization and herbicide application. They NEVER leave a mess and ALWAYS take the trash with them. Lawncare of Hampton Roads is prompt, consistent and incredibly affordable. I couldn't be happier or more grateful. -Ashley

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

      • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
      • Read online reviews of client experiences.
      • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
      • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
      • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
