I highly recommend Andrea as a professional dog trainer. Not only was she extremely knowledgeable and an excellent teacher, she was readily available and very flexible with her schedule. Her instructions were very clear and beneficial. In addition, I appreciated that her price was reasonable and she made all of her suggestions in one visit. She could have easily and justifiably stretched the training out for multiple private visits. She addressed all issues in one visit but was willing to come back, if necessary.

Erika is my go-to person for dog training and dog sitting! I have two rescue dogs, both adopted at the age of two with no training. Needless to say I needed help badly! Now my pups sit and wait to go in and out of doors, and they will do most anything for a treat. It's also nice to be able to go out of town and not have to worry about my fur babies! She's the only one I trust with them (and also to stay at my home with them), and she sends me plenty of updates while I'm gone.

Paula made a site visit to my apartment and met with my Dog and me. She quickly identified the problem I was having with my Shiba, and drew up a plan on steps we can try to fix the fear aggression that my dog displayed. Paula asked quite a few questions which were right on queue with all the concerns I had with my dog. I look forward to seeing the results in my dog in the following weeks to come. My main goal is to have a people friendly dog, and I would like to be able to bring my dog to dog parks so she can interact with other people and dogs.

Gail knows what she is doing, she is the best dog trainer in the USA. She is realistic, fair, reasonable, and completely honest. Throw away your clickers, throw away your e-collars, and find someone who can COMMUNICATE with your dog fairly, with clarity, and get the job done! Training method is totally transferrable, you don't have to take home a dog that only listens to the trainer! Take home a dog that listens to and RESPECTS YOU! Have an off-leash, trustworthy companion. Gail is the only person in the world who can do what she does- Cesar Millan, move aside!

Carla is a gifted dog handler and trainer. She has an innate ability to connect with even the most hard headed and difficult of dog and transform them into an obedient and well mannered joy to own! Carla is patient and highly skilled in working with the first time dog owner to the experienced field trial competitor. I have known Carla for over 8 years. I have watched her transform all types of dogs as well as my own GSD, and, without hesitation, recommend Carla as the #1 choice for dog training. Call her NOW!

Before training with Brenda at Doggie Zen, my high energy lab/terrier mix Phoebe was an out of control, destructive, ill mannered puppy. She was sweet and lovable, but it had no clue how to "civilize" her and make her a good dog citizen. After our first training session with Brenda at Doggie Zen, I saw immediate changes. After several more sessions, she is a different dog. As a trainer, Brenda is competent, calm , patient, and knowledgeable. She had my dog's rapt attention the first time she walked into my home. She has earned my dogs love and respect, and mine too. In reality, I think I am the one who has learned the most because Doggie Zen trains the dog and the owner. The training has met and far exceeded my expectations. I can highly recommend Brenda and Doggie Zen.

Andrea is an outstanding dog trainer and pet sitter. She has been helping me with my pets for years now. My dog Chaos is pit-lab mix and she is very hyper. Andrea has calmed her down significantly over the past year. Chaos loves Andrea and is excited to spend time with her and learn what she is teaching. I don’t know what I would do without her.

great trainer, very knowledgeable. Helped with 2 serious issues, over all a better dog thanks to her help. We were at a crossroads when we found this trainer, either a new home for our boy which could of just led to more problems, or putting him down due to biting his humans, and aggression towards our other dogs. This trainer saved us and our dog and we are a much more relaxed dog owner, dog family. 2 week board and train program was awesome. Expensive, but in line with other places we checked out. classes could be a bit more organized, would like to see similar levels of obedience grouped together in classes.

Within one meeting our dog was coming to me and sitting on my feet on command. My initial thought was these collars 'shocked" your dog as a punishment. Actually, it's more of a tap on the shoulder to get their attention back on you. Many times I thought the trainer possessed a magic want. Wonderful to have a well trained dog!

Ron took our puppy Dakota for a 2 week boot camp. Just when I thought Santa's gift of a dog would have to go back, he came home a completely different, better dog! Not only does Ron work with the dog, but he teaches the family how to be better pet owners. He worked great with my daughter, which was very needed to get control over this dog. Dakota is mostly behaved now, and when he isn't, we know from our lessons at Canine Class, that we need to focus more- not Dakota. I've recommended Ron to many others. Fantastic dog trainer!

Rose Freguson is not the dog whisperer - she is the dog hypnotist, the ultimate trainer of dogs. I hired Rose for a few sessions with my dogs to help me get them under control for my disabled husband. What she taught them in a few sessions has resulted in a permanent change in their behavior. They are responsive, obedient, and they get along perfectly now with our neighbor dogs. If you don't hire Rose, you're wasting your money.

Stephanie was fantastic with my dog Adi. She clearly knew what she was doing and she was more than happy to answer all of my questions. Training a dog is more than the pet it is so much about the owner and how they behave and she helped me to understand that. I would recommend her to everyone I know with a dog.

Nikki is a wonderful trainer. She is very thorough in her training. I like that she explains the pack mentality before she begins her training and gives a background of her relationships with her dogs she has had and currently has. She make me understand what it is like to be the " leader" of your dog and thathat discipline is not bad for my dog. She always uses a pleasant and calm demeanor when training even in correction and using that on my dog has worked wonders. She always explains the commands for them and the reasons why they are the commands. I havery had dogs before and very little knowledge of their behaviors and what to look for and I can now proudly walk my dog knowing that he loves me and I completely happy that I am the one that leads him. I am able to take him everywhere with me without any doubt on his behavior towards people or other animals and that he is happy. Thank you Nikki!!

I take my dog Barkley to Jordan for schutzhund and scent detection training. He has done wonders with Barkley and keeps his mind active the whole time we are there! He knows exactly how to keep him focused and stimulated and I always come back with a worn out dog. His prices are unbeatable compared to what other trainers charge for this kind of work. Jordan has a lot of experience and really knows what he's doing. I definitely recommend him to anyone that has a working dog or a dog that needs some training!

I train all types of dogs, but mostly, I train people too. It's not all about the dog's behavior. It is also the people's behavior. I communicate the way dogs think and the way they want to live. The people can explain the behaviors that they need help on breaking, and I help solve the problem. As long as the client is willing to be consistent with their pets, everyone will be happy.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
