Rich did an excellent job painting our master bedroom. He took the time to clean up old paint that was on the trim and ceiling, and did a very great job with painting the room. It looks like a whole new room! thank you.

I do not have any complaints with their service. They were very helpful by offering multiple options for the work that needed to be done. They were also very available for all my questions and concerns. I had them do both a new roof and a master bathroom remodel. I have more projects that I hope to use them on.

Keith was extremely professional, considerate and timely. He always responded promptly to messages and let us know up front what to expect. He is very personable and a true craftsman. Our fence looks fantastic and the double gates on both sides are just what we wanted. Keith does excellent work and we highly recommend him. Look no further and hire him now. 😊

Bordeaux Construction Services did an outstanding job on a water damage repair job for my currently leased home. I believe the price was just right especially for the quick response from Lee. The home had first floor drywall damage caused by a plumbing leak in the 2nd floor master bath. Lee contacted me within 30 minutes of my quote request on Thumtak.com and asked to take a look at the water damage to the property two days later, on a Saturday, in order to provide a quote for the repair. After confirming with the tenant, we solidified the time. I was so happy with the expedited response and his response to me in general on the website that I then explained the problem to the best of my knowledge. I wanted a single general contractor to take care of my problem! It is such a pain dealing with multiple contractors for a repair job. I asked if Lee would could find the leak, repair it and the damaged drywall. He told me he would definitely do his best to fix the problem but he really needed to look at it first. I authorized him to do what he could. When Lee showed up at the property on Saturday, he did just that. He removed the damaged drywall, inspected the master bath plumbing, troubleshot by testing the bathtub plumbing and found the leak. He repaired the plumbing on the spot. He explained to the tenant they needed to allow time for the water in the ceiling to dry and for the repair to cure. On Monday, he called the tenant and asked them to test the repair. All went well and he scheduled the drywall repair two days later. The ceiling is dry wall with knock-down plaster which can be extremely hard to match in the middle of the ceiling. The tenant was extremely happy with the workmanship. I couldn't be more happy with his efforts as a property owner who is currently deployed overseas. He turned a truly stressfull situation for myself and the tenant family into a total success. Thank you Lee!

I have worked with Mark Barrett, owner of Top Notch General Contracting for almost 10 years. He has basically redone my entire home...from exterior doors and windows, gutting and remodeling baths, removing a fireplace and reworking the roof, and much more! He has gutted and installed a brand new kitchen at my Mom's home and completed work at many of my real estate client's homes. Top Notch contractors are particularly excellent carpenters and drywall installers, but they can do any job you need. Mark is timely and does what he says he is going to do. If a subcontractor does not do a job right, Mark will redo it himself until you are satisfied. I will not work with anyone but Top Notch!

I am very pleased with the exterior stair rails and banister that Greg built and installed on my home. They are well made and will last for years. Greg is very personable and easy to work with. He is an excellent carpenter and designer. He came when he said he would and left the area spotless. I have another project for him as soon as he can get to it.

We purchased our shutters from Seaside Shutters and could not be happier. The quality of materials used were outstanding and the workmanship was fantastic. Our shutters are like what master craftsmen would have built for historic homes.

Robert did an amazing job. A true carpenter and very professional. I would recommend him highly to anyone needing carpentry work done. The crown molding above my kitchen cabinets is beautiful. He also completed my sliding glass door trim in the rain no less and did a really nice job.

The owner/technician was not only knowledgeable about the service he performed, but he was also prompt and courteous. The saying "jack of all trades master of none" is far from the truth as it relates to this company. A broad spectrum of services are provided in high quality with excellent professionalism. I would definitely use their services again. (A/C & plumbing customer)

I combined my master bedroom with a smaller bedroom to make a master suite. Chris Ward, owner of 1st Class Interiors Corp., performed the work which included expanding an existing closet in the smaller bedroom into a walk-in closet and expanding the opening between the two rooms so that it became one large suite with a sitting area and a new walk-in closet. They also did all of the drywall and finishing work in the project. A header had to be installed above the expanded opening because it was a weight-bearing wall. The end result is exactly what I had envisioned and the quality of the work was excellent and completed in the length of time that was projected.

Danny assembled a big playset for us that we purchased for our son for Christmas. He was a very hard worker, reliable, knowledgable, and detail oriented. The price he quoted us was very reasonable. The playset took longer than expected and he came back the next day (on Christmas!) to work on it until complete without even asking for more money. We recommend Danny for any sort of handy work and would use him again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
