Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth getting a personal trainer?

If you have fitness goals that you’re having trouble accomplishing on your own, hiring a personal trainer can be worth the money. People rarely regret getting in shape — even if it costs money. Personal trainers create accountability, as you’ll have to confess to them if you don’t stick to your training schedule. They’re trained to push you just hard enough, and they take your body type and goals into account when creating a fitness plan.

How often should you see a personal trainer?

How often you should see your personal trainer depends both on your budget and your fitness level. If you’re new to the exercise routine, maybe start with one to three visits per week to establish a good routine and understanding. Talk to personal trainers near you to figure out the perfect cadence for your personal training sessions.

How much does a personal trainer cost near me?

Expect to pay between $35 and $90 per hour for a personal trainer near you. The length of the session, as well as the number of sessions you book in advance, will have an impact on the price. You can often get lower prices per session by booking more of them. Group training also tends to be less expensive than one-on-one training, as is going to the gym instead of having the trainer come to meet you. Trainer certification is also a factor — trainers with more certification are likely to charge more.

It's important to do your research and get cost estimates from several personal trainers near you before you hire anyone.

How can I find a trainer?

Search for personal trainers near you online, and identify the ones with the highest ratings. Read their customer testimonials, and look at customers’ before-and-after photos (if available). It’s also important to find out whether the trainers sought professional training and certification, if they can adhere to your schedule and if they can train you at a location that works for both of you.

Finally, contact several trainers for cost estimates. This way, you can hire a trainer who not only provides great services but also fits within your budget.

What exactly does a personal trainer do?

A personal trainer is tasked with working with a client to achieve fitness goals. Personal trainers may take clients in a small group or do one-on-one training. Their focus is on fitness goals — muscular capacity, working on cardiovascular endurance, improving flexibility, and even recommending diet changes and at-home exercises. Personal trainers may work with clients in the gym or at their homes, depending on their preference.

Is kickboxing good exercise?

Kickboxing is great exercise. It works your whole body and really gets your heart pounding. Kickboxing combines upper- and lower-body movements like roundhouse kicks and uppercut punches that boost calorie burning. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how much exercise you get. Kickboxing training that takes place in a martial arts studio will involve kicking and punching a sandbag or sparring with a competitor, both of which will sharply increase the amount of exercise you’ll experience in a kickboxing session.

Comparatively, a study by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that women doing group fitness cardio kickboxing burned between 6.45 and 8.3 calories per minute, or approximately 350-450 calories burned during an hour-long class. This is roughly what you can expect to burn with jogging or similar exercise, but ACE says that cardio kickboxing offers the added benefits of increased strength and flexibility, sharper reflexes, and improved coordination. Whether you’re training to fight competitively, learning kickboxing as a form of self-defense, or taking cardio kickboxing at your local gym, you’ll get a full-body workout with positive health benefits.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

Yesterday I was researching finding a personal trainer online. I reached out to Winfrey from Progress Fitness. I left a message and received a call back within the hour. Set up a training session for the next morning at the time of my choosing. Winfrey was at the gym when I got there in the wee morning hours already training another. The workout I received was great for my skill level. Winfrey is knowledgeable, personable and professional. The cost is reasonable and there is no long term commitment not gym fee. I am looking forward to my next training session!!!!

Nikki is a great personal trainer, and she’s fun. she’s patient with the workouts, so I don’t feel intimidated if I don’t know something and feel comfortable asking if I’m doing the exercises correctly. I have always felt intimidated by gyms, but I can honestly say, everyone goes about their work out business and no judgements.

I have been training with Zack for about 4 months now. It has been a life-changing experience for me. He makes the workouts super fun and super easy; and tailors the workouts based on your goals. Not only that, but he will also give you knowledge on nutrition so you can go about your fitness journey in a holistic manner. In my opinion, a holistic approach is the most important factor when you are trying to reach your fitness goals. We talk about life/experiences and share a laugh while working out, he is very easy to get along with. I will recommend Zack to everyone who is looking for a personal trainer.

One minute I'm trying to lotion my back after falling asleep on the couch wrong, and the next, I'm clutching my ear with my shoulder due to a sudden onset of neck pain! Kenya made a house call the next day and worked the kinks out. I immediately felt a difference after the massage therapy session was over. Now on to healing so I can start stretching daily. I plan to utilize Kenya's services in the future personal training.

Straight Edge Fitness contacted me on the same day that I searched for a personal trainer on Thumbtack. Sasha explained in detail about their program, my fitness goals, and what she could do to help me meet/exceed those goals. I have been working with Sasha for 6 weeks now and love every minute of it. She is motivational and pushes me when I don't think I can go any further. Along with the training, the diet/nutritional aspect is amazing as well. The team at Straight Edge Fitness are friendly and professional and all have a common end goal in mind for all of their clients - and that is determination! To push yourself to your limit. Results happen with dedication! Thanks Straight Edge Fitness!!

I’ve been training with Nikki at Straight Edge Fitness for about a month and a half and I can already feel results! I was surprised at how much more effective having a personal trainer is compared to trying to workout in my own. Her attitude is just what I need to accomplish my fitness goals. She’s extremely knowledgeable about fitness and nutrition and is always there to motivate me with a smile on her face. If I’m ever unsure about a certain exercise, she’ll always be willing to explain it further and even show me and give me tips on how to do it properly. I don’t dread going to the gym anymore, I actually feel like I’m working with a friend when I have training sessions with Nikki! She’s very friendly and down to earth, and makes it super easy to set goals for yourself while she helps you achieve them. I would 100% recommend Nikki and Straight Edge Fitness to anyone looking to create a healthier lifestyle.

Lety was amazing! She always pushed and motivated both my husband and I even though we were at two different levels of fitness. She was my first ever personal trainer and as a woman around 330 pounds I was frightened to get started. She made me feel comfortable, there was no judgement, and she didn’t let me give up. I definitely saw results! We only stopped going because of timing and financial reasons. I would recommend her one thousand times over!!!

Team Fit4Real (Sanford) is the best personal training I’ve ever had. I’ve worked out with him for about six weeks now, and have lost 19lbs! Sanford is super personable and very knowledgeable. He breaks down each exercise and explains the muscles they impact, so I know I’m doing it correctly. I always look forward to our workout sessions, as I feel progress every single session. He has helped my strength and confidence return. If you need the motivation to get you through to your fitness goals, I highly recommend Team Fit4Real (Sanford)!!

I feel the burn in every workout , love the feeling of it ♥️💪🏻 I feel myself again happy and energize. Will continue on my journey with Nikki to reach my goal in toning up my body. Highly recommend !

Everyone at Straight Edge Fitness are phenomenal . They are helpful and caring. They are nothing like regular gyms that may have personal trainers that you can get to help you or pay them for some of their time, but the training and teaching between Straight Edge and a regular gym are as different as night and day. My personal trainer is Nikki. She gives you 100% of her undivided attention. It has always been one on one with every appointment. She is very attentive and makes sure you are doing your exercises in the correct manner. She will even stop you and do them herself so you will have a better understanding. Nikki is second to none in my book. She understands about my aches and pains (being 65) and does everything right to give me a good workout with each visit. I love it that if she sees that I can do more she will take me to the next level and surprisingly I can do more than I thought, which I would have never known if It had not been for Nikki. She always tailors the workouts to fit my needs and what she knows I can do. Every time I walk out of that gym I am so happy with myself that I was there. We all lead busy lives, and I have learned you do not need to spend hours in a gym to achieve your goals. Just stick with it. I have a long way to go but look forward to each session with Nikki. I think the whole staff is great, and once I had to work with Joe when Nikki and I had a scheduling conflict. He is awesome as well, and they are genuinely concerned about your needs. Nikki is never in a hurry to get you in and out and always very encouraging. I really do love this gym. You will not be sorry . Take the plunge, go see Nikki and let her feed you some of that knowledge she has!

So, there I was sitting on the couch in my living room unmotivated and exhausted. I was frustrated because I knew I was packing on the pounds and I needed to do something about it. I am a mother and a significant other with a full time job. I worked 60+ hours a week. Between that, regular household duties, and my son's extracurricular activities I already feel a bit overwhelmed at times. I thought "I need a personal trainer to get me motivated." I thought about the time and believed I owed it to myself. I thought about the money and had to remind myself all the hundreds of dollars spent on useless games and items spent on my other half and son and that I was worth the money too. I googled personal trainers, found thumbtack and saw that it would send potential trainers to me. From there I found Natalie and I must say it was an exceptional choice. Initially it was her professionalism and energy that made me believe she was the right choice. Six months and 47 pounds later I have found a coach that is motivating. Her meal plan has gave me a simple but healthy way to eat that transcends to the table at home for better options for my family. She pushes you and escalates your work out to a degree that gets results but doesn't have you limping around in pain. Any questions I have if she knows it she volunteers the information and if she doesn't know she will research it to get you an answer. She has been as passionate about my journey as I have and she doesn't hold punches if I get off the track that gets me results. She is consistent and overall has been the best decision I have made for myself in a long while. I have energy. I make me important and that better me has more to offer to my family and job. Natalie is truly a great choice . If you don't need to just lose weight but someone to help you create healthy habits and a way of life choose Natalie.
