Erik has taken on the role of my #1 handyman. He is the guy I now call in case I need ANYTHING fixed or installed. He fixed my kitchen sink, replaced my bathroom sink faucets, fixed an electrical problem that he later found out was dangerous (thank God). He also fixed 2 of our toilets. In a few weeks he is going to fix my back door and weather stripping because the foundation settled and created a space in between the door and frame. Next year, he may be re-doing my concrete deck and making it look more decorative around the pool.

Karl is extremely knowledgeable when it come to construction. He has built me a 12x12 work shop with an attached enclosed lean to. The attention to detail has been outstanding and his ability to incorperate new ideas mid project is amazing. We will have Karl do several more project for us. My Father In Law is going to hire him to build a pergola, and me neighbors intend on calling him as well. What ever your project is, you will be a to rest at ease while Karl builds it for you.

Curtis Schneider has been helping us for many years. He has improved our lives in many ways. In addition to re-doing our bathroom, he has built a beautiful new master bedroom for us, He has worked on the plumbing in this old house, has built a new front porch for us, and has generally taken care of our house and property for many years. He is responsible and honest, and his work has been of the finest quality. We would trust him to take care of our place without question. He does high quality work.

The last thing he did for me was to change an outdoor porch to a beautiful inside room. Everything he has ever done for me has been outstanding . He is decent, honest and very much a perfectionist. I would recommend him highly.

I hired The Home Doctor to complete construction on our unfinished upstairs. The project began with an open space, no walls or even frames in place. We now have 2 bedrooms with closets, 1 bathroom and a huge walk in closet! The Home Doctor also was able to double the size of the bathroom by adding a dormer. I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of work and the time it took to compete the project. He worked efficiently, along with providing his own tools and didn't leave any residue for the home owner from the construction. The Home Doctor talked us through every step of the project and gave expert advice when we had questions. I highly recommend The Home Doctor for any project of any size. I plan on hiring him again when we are ready to build our large deck!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
