Sylvia is great! She clearly has a broad base of knowledge and experience with dogs and their handlers. She is great at explaining dog behavior clearly, and in a straightforward way. I loved being around her, and enjoyed the training session. I've already recommended her to two of my friends who need pup training. She clearly cares a tremendous amount about dogs and their people.

Already seeing improvement after one session. She caught a lot of little issues we hadn’t thought were issues as we just dismissed them as puppy behavior or a phase

I have loved my experience at Zoom Room! The prices are reasonable and positive training is working very well for me and my pup. Cheryl is extremely knowledgeable and intuitive about my dog's behavior and has been patient with me as I learn how to use the clicker. Also, she was understanding when I had a problem with my payment card, which I feel is an example of her non-judgmental and easy-going attitude. I will definitely continue my training at Zoom Room!

Having April out to our house was amazing. We have a 2 year old English mastiff who thought he ran our house. She was very professional and worked hard to help us understand what we were doing that helped in our dog's negative behavior. She was respectful and knew what she was doing. I would recommend her to help out with your dog. Since having April to our house our dog is much better behaved and when there is a problem we are able to understand what we are doing to contribute to it.

We went through Belynda's 8 week training course with our 7 month old boston terrier, Lucy. Lucy started out as a goofy, easily distracted puppy who walked zigzag on a leash. Belynda helped turn Lucy into an obedient little puppy. She also helped us better understand: the training process, Lucy's behavior & how to react to or correct Lucy to get the best results out of the training program. She was also able to help us address some of the small issues we were having at home with Lucy (jumping up on people, chewing on inappropriate things, etc.) It was a great course for all of us!

We have a 100 pound 5 year old German Shepard that was aggressive to other dogs while on leash. They helped us understand his behavior on leash. They are still helping me be more consistent and watch and understand the cues my dog is giving me. I appreciate their patience and true passion for helping did owners help their dogs.

We have met with Alex once, and have scheduled another session this week. He has such a calm and reassuring demeanor, and our dog responded very well to him! We've been implementing his advice in our training routine and have seen results already! Our energetic 1 year old puppy is jumping less, barking less, and listens to us more.

My experience has been a very good one. I had been having trouble with my dog biting me when we went for walks. That problem seems to be solved. Shawna's understanding of animals has helped to translate some of the dog speak for me. In other she has been able to explain the dog's actions for me and to tell me how to deal with her, I am very grateful for her help.

Julie's knowledge and expertise were evident from the clear instructions she provided to me and the way she interacted with my Husky-Mal mix, Koda. Koda would go crazy whenever she encountered other dogs when we took our walks, so I sought Julie's help in finding ways to deal with those situations, as well as ways to help introduce her to known friendly dogs. She brought her dogs (Malamutes) to assess Koda's reactivity and we worked on exercises to divert her attention and to gradually approach and greet her dog in a more controlled manner. She also showed me how to prevent Koda from jumping up when greeting people and tips on training her to greet people politely. I've been practicing what I learned with Koda and her behavior has definitely improved. I'd recommend Julie/Learning 4 Life Dog Training to anyone looking for training and practical advice using positive reinforcement.

Melinda is incredible! I think our pets are hoping we will travel again soon so that they can hang out with her! She is very diligent, detailed, and absolutely loves animals. She really treated our older cat and dog like they were her own. I cannot recommend her highly enough and it gave us great piece of mind that our pets and home would be well cared for while we were gone.

Jacqui was asked to jump into a very difficult situation and she was absolutely marvelous. I watched Jacqui train four dogs for a commercial shoot, in which, she had very little time to prepare and time was of the essence. It was a complete success! Jacqui has a confident demeanor and knows how to work with animals proficiently. With over 6 years of experience, I can't think of a better trainer for our commercial shoot. Jacqui is kind and respectful and was the lynchpin in ensuring the success of our shoot and ultimately our commercial spot. We could not have done it without her. If you need your dog trained, call her right now! You will not be disappointed. Thank you, Jacqui for all of your help! I will be calling you again, when my director tells me that our talent is a bunch of pooches. You rock!

Carol at Northwest Dog Retreat is truly exceptional. I adopted a small dog from an animal shelter and was extremely overwhelmed in the beginning when I first began to discover some of his behavioral issues. As a first time dog owner, I was unsure how to deal with his fears and also my own. I knew I was not equipped to train a dog with fears and aggressions on my own and I was thankful to have been able to find Carol at Northwest Dog Retreat. Carol really took the time to listen to me and my concerns, and with her knowledge, help and guidance, Bruno has totally turned around and is more outgoing and expressive than ever. She is caring, intuitive and truly has a special way with animals. She has given me tools, tips and support through out the process and I am so grateful to have met her! Not only does she help with behavioral training in her own home and well as public arenas, she has boarding and the retreat location is beautiful! Plenty of space for dogs to run and play and enjoy. I would recommend her to anyone and everyone. Her true passion sets her apart from the others. Thank you Carol!

Janet was a pleasure to work with! She came to our home to help us manage our dogs fear/phobia that was progressively getting worse. She had great ideas that we would have never thought of and helped us practice and refine some training techniques. She even helped us with our other dog and issues we hadn't planned on dealing with in that session. She answered all our questions and made sure we felt good about everything before she left. Highly recommend working with Janet who clearly loves animals and is good at what she does.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
