Sylvia is a true dog whisperer and she has saved our family many times. The first time I was almost in tears because my puppies were fighting all the time and I was afraid I might have to re-home one of them. She calmly told me that all I needed to do was learn how to be the pack leader. She was right! Once the dogs knew my husband and I were in charge, they no longer fought each other for dominance. The next time was when my husband was away in the army and I became too sick to take care of my dogs. My dogs are my babies and I'm so grateful that Sylvia was there to watch over them. She took care of them as if they were her own until I got better and my husband came home. They were so happy and healthy and vibrant when we picked them up. Sylvia has also taught me how to do service dog training with my dog, Ike. Sylvia loves all creatures, human or animal, and has a big heart. She especially reaches out to help veterans and the disabled. There is no one else I would trust more with my family, you can trust her with yours.

Thank you Martha! I was very hesitant about getting a trainer, only because it is a little bit of a financial commitment and I think a lot of us think that we can do things ourselves, but I was really having a hard time with one of my dogs and decided that it was worth it to try a trainer. She was great. She was very responsive and attentive before I even hired her, and even more so after. She works with you to make sure you get what you want/need out of the session. She met my two dogs and helped me better understand why they were misbehaving and how I could make them better. She listened to all my concerns and addressed all of them, and best of all once she works with you, you can call her anytime for additional help which is very reassuring. On a side note she is also very fair, and if money is a concern she can definitely work with you to try to keep the time frame within your budget which was very appreciated. If you are looking for a dog trainer, I definitely recommend Martha!

Ada was prompt in responding to my initial request for dog trainers near my home and after discussing what needs to be accomplished explained what she believed would be necessary and how much it would cost giving me the opportunity to talk it over with my daughter (the dog's real owner) who will get back with me tomorrow about the degree of commitment to help pay for the service. Ada kindly accepted the delay and pleasantly offered the suggestion that if it didn't work out just now she would be happy to help whenever we were ready. So, I already know we are going to hire her because she is so flexible and considerate regarding our circumstances and needs.

Cindy Wilson is an excellent dog trainer. She even trained my dog to ring the bill to let me know when he wants to go out. I still call her till this day when I have dog training questions. Even though she's now in another state. I highly recommend her services.

I absolutely love Lise! (Long post but very honest). We adopted a 1.5 years old border collie/brittany/terrier mix from a shelter about 8 months ago. I have worked in shelters before and knew perfectly well that is not uncommon for shelter dogs to experience some trauma or carry some trauma from past experiences. Knowing this, we still went all in and got our beautiful Daisy, however she indeed started to display multiple issues after a few weeks of having her at home. It was very hard at the beginning to try and understand what was happening, what was going through Daisy's mind and how we could help her. She was very loud and excitable, she reacted to a dog that came close to her and then she reacted even worse in a few other occasions. After doing some online research I came to articles that described her behavior as "Fear based aggression" and that it was recommended that I seek professional help. After about a week of researching and reading reviews, I decided to give PAWS A Foot a call. Lise was SO nice over the phone and listed to me as I explained to her everything that had happened. She was patient, honest and super knowledgeable, she told me that it can be worked out and gave me options to move forward. After the first call, we decided to schedule a first assessment. This only confirmed even further that Lise was excellent and that we wanted to continue working with her. We trained with Lise for about 5 months to address the first set of issues and we have seen so much change and improvement from the positive training approach that Lise uses. One of the things that I am most grateful to Lise is the fact that she was very honest with us. Letting us know exactly what she believed was going to be the optimal outcome and what we can and cannot expect our Daisy. This helped us tremendously to understand that our dog had certain issues that might never change but that she can learn to tolerate. Lise has also helped us connect with other local businesses, like groomers, agility trainers & dog walkers. We are still training Daisy & we reach out to Lise when we believe we can move forward and add more to our training plan.

We have been working with April for a little over a month to train our rescue dog Milo. April is easy to work with and our dog responds positively to her. I like how she has goals for us to work on, but also addresses any issues we have with Milo during the week. I also appreciate that she comes to our house, so we can work on issues specific to our environment. I highly recommend April if you are looking for a dog (or people) trainer.

So very thankful for Alex and his knowledge about what was best for my dog Lucy. He gave me really workable, sound advice. Lucy is totally responding to his directions. I feel he gave us both tactics to go forward with. Given Lucy, is a high attention dog I am sure we will need him to come back!

I chose Gina because she was featured in several articles as being one of the best dog trainers in the area. She took very good care of my dog, giving her plenty of attention and exercise, taking her to the park, lake, and trails. She focused on the training I felt my dog needed the most plus reinforced some basic commands. GIna was also very flexible when I wanted to visit my dog and see how her training was going. I highly recommend her.

Daphne was great working with my dog Murray and I on training. She is very patient and kind. She taught me to look for the cues Murray was giving when he was getting overwhelmed. Because of Daphne's training methods, Murray is now much more confident and able to walk well on a leash. Not only did Daphne teach Murray how to be confident, she taught me how to be a confident dog-owner. Thank you Daphne!

Margaret did a great job showing me just what it takes to become the alpha that my two dogs want to follow. She led by example and explained why she was doing the things she was doing, as she was doing them. It was a great help that she had given me a call prior and through about a half hour conversation got to know my two pups and our situation specifically, asking questions about details I would have never even thought of or considered. When Margaret arrived, she had a full page written out of notes she had taken from our phone conversation, and was thoroughly prepared for the lessons that laid ahead. She even had a print out of her 5 golden rules for us, each one being broken down into specific detail for my husband and I to follow. Many of the methods she taught were amazing to watch and I was able to see instant changes in my pups behaviors. She demonstrates thoroughly, then has you practice yourself until you get it down. She also brought us some bonus items, like lead ropes and a whistle etc. to help with our dogs training. Margaret is in no rush, she is there with you and is dedicated to you and your family. She dug deeper and deeper to get to the root of problems and find the best customized solutions. It was very clear that she was fully there and wasn't just dropping by for a paycheck. So far it has been just one week since she came to our home and worked with our family, and already I am seeing some positive changes in behavior. Margaret's program is easy to follow and easy to understand. You don't have to be a dog whisperer to have well behaved pups and a stress free environment with them. Can't wait to see how sticking to this program will help as time goes on! Thanks Margaret!

J.P. is a fantastic trainer. Unlike most other trainers, he has a firm grasp on dog personality and will help you to thoroughly understand your dogs way of thinking. Once you understand how the dog thinks, it will allow you to get the dog to do what you need it to do. As long as you follow J.P.'s lesson plan and advice, you will se a whole new dog. J.P. doesnt change or train your dog, he trains you as a dog owner. Worth every last dollar. You will be amazed at the results.

Phenomenal trainer! Great at helping animals with behavioral problems or if you just want to teach your dog to sit and stay he can do that too. He has been able to make aggressive animals adoptable and trained many animals for television roles.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
