Introduction: Dr. Kao has taught piano for more than 16 years. During the Pandemic, she has offered over 2200 remote lessons for 18 months since March 2020 and is offering in-person lessons between 9/10 and 10/30. She holds the Doctorate in Musical Arts (D.M.A.) in Piano, from Peabody Conservatory at The Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Kao’s ability covers students from the most fundamental to the professionals, including evaluating potential students’ playing skills and music knowledge. At her studio, cultivating the highest quality in musical art is essential, and is the core value. Her piano lessons focus on technical development through fostering self-discipline and growing musicianship. Using these and repertoire development and musical aesthetics, her goal is to promote a positive attitude towards all the arts, as well as life itself. In March 2021, one of her students received the Silver Medal at the 2021 Seattle International Piano Festival & Competition. In April 2021, one of her MasterClass students received the first prize at the County Level of the Taiwanese Piano Competition. Dr. Kao is an active member at both Lake Washington Chapter and Eastside Music Teacher Associations. She is the current Vice President (2021-2022)and was the Secretary (2018-2021) at Lake Washington Chapter Music Teacher Association. She organized the Masterclass for fellow teachers, and was invited to serve as an adjudicator for Edmonds MTA (2018-2019). Dr. Kao also serves as a piano instructor at Bellevue College. In 2019, Dr. Kao was requested by a California publishing firm, Brookside Press, to write an independent piano review for its Magazine Acoustic & Digital Piano Buyer and its readers. She was authorized by the publisher to do whatever she likes, with complete freedom. This third-party review article ”Review: Ant. Petrof” was published as the first featured article in the online Fall 2019 issue, as well as the 10th Anniversary issue, for the entire piano industry. Before clicking the button to ask Dr. Kao’s availability, please read the guideline in the Q & A section. She is a friendly and a serious piano teacher, and she does not like wasting time for both students and herself. Therefore, it is important for the potential students to read the guideline and understand the philosophy. :) If you decide to click the bottom to contact her, please make sure that you are ready for the trial lesson. The trial lesson is for both parties to see if the teaching and learning work well for the long-term remote lessons, as well as the possible in-person lessons under the bearable condition during the Pandemic. Reading the information and guideline properly will save energy and time for both parties, thank you! - - - - Dr. Kao’s learning and working experience is truly under multi-cultural influences, a combination between Asian, European, Russian, and American styles. :)

My family was excited to find Ms. Patience! COVID social-distancing encouraged us to try remote lessons and it has been nothing short of top-notch. A consummate professional, extremely kind, gifted in instruction, and a highly-accomplished concert pianist with a Ph.D in piano is a rarity in the world of music lessons. Not only has Patience connected well with my children, she has a very unique and approachable way of using analogies so the kids "get the point" of their lessons. She is quick to laugh and bolster the children with genuine words of encouragement. When teaching more challenging points, Patience breaks down the information in bite-size/digestible pieces with language that helps the kids "visualize". Admittedly, I was reluctant to do remote lessons because my children struggled with this learning scenario in the past. What Patience has done to address the lack of in-person contact is set up three different camera angles: one where students can see her playing the piano, one of her hands, and one that allows her to circle and point to notes on the sheet music so the kids always know where she is and don't get lost in the navigation. Having taken in-person lessons for years, I would say that Ms. Patience has managed to successfully duplicate the efficacy and personal warmth of in-person lessons. Finally, Patience has worked with our family to set up a payment method that was convenient for us. We don't have access to the same banking institutions being that we don't live in the same city, so she has gone above and beyond to make this accessible, including calling the payment app. and setting it up for receipt of our payments. She has really gone the extra mile. You won't be sorry if you hire Ms. Patience! She will be a blessing to your family as she has been to ours.

Dr Kao is a great teacher. She is experienced and recognizes the areas my daughter needs to work on, yet she is encouraging and patient, and worked with her on her own pace. I highly recommend Dr. Kao.

My son attended piano lessons at a local music school for over a year, and during that time worked with two teachers. When his second teacher decided to relocate back to the East Coast I asked her to help me select a new instructor and brought her a list of possibilities. After reviewing their professional biographies, she told me without hesitation to try to arrange lessons with Dr. Kao. Since beginning lessons with Dr. Kao, Ive come to realize how vast the difference is between a teacher who can show a student the basics, and one who has the exceptional level of training, experience, and ability that Dr. Kao has. Shes accessible and adjusts her teaching to both the ability and temperament of the student. Shes dedicated to the progress of her pupils, setting out clear expectations and goals, with an emphasis on technique and accuracy. Her students range from young beginners to adults in advanced academic programs, and she scales her instruction deftly to match their needs. Finally, her membership in multiple professional associations means that her students have access to a variety of performance and recital opportunities. I would absolutely recommend lessons with her to anyone looking to advance their own studies, or to provide an excellent opportunity for their child.

My daughter started taking piano lesson with Dr. Kao one year ago, right after we had experienced two teacher turnover in another piano studio in Bellevue. Dr. Kao has excellent background in piano performance and pedagogy. She sets high standards for her students. At the same time, she is very personable and knows how to engage kids and motivate them to practice. She helped my daughter rebuild piano foundations and interests in music. My daughter now enjoys her daily practice and uses the challenges to build up her techniques and confidence. I know Dr. Kao also has adult students. She has been influential by sharing her piano teaching and learning philosophy. The tips becomes very helpful when parents and students face challenges and reach bottlenecks. I highly recommend Dr. Kao to all future piano students.

My son began studying piano with Dr. Kao 2 years ago as a beginning student. Learning the piano is a special challenge for a 5 years old, yet Dr. Kao has shown unending patience and flexibility in her teaching. She crafts her lessons around my sons interests and enables him to progress at his own pace, always encouraging but never placing undue demands or expectations on him. As a teacher she invoked her long musical career and her own virtuosity on the piano in ways that enhance students understanding of piano history, styles, and techniques. She also weaves in plenty of music theory, trying theory to practice in a way that makes her lesson more holistic and accessible. Her passion for the piano is infectious and is always punctual for our lessons. She is always flexible whenever I need to reschedule a lesson due to obligations. I highly recommend Dr. Kao as a piano teacher and happy about my sons progrss

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I do not offer free consultation/free trial lesson because I act/response honestly to all. After you pay the fee, both parties will receive a confirmation email separately. Upon checking the confirmation status, you will receive a link to the appointed lesson with a document explaining the equipments and the setting we need. In that first meeting, as well as the trial lesson, we will be working together directly to: 1) know each other and start our piano journey, 2) perform an in-depth evaluation and discuss the opinions and comments, and 3) plan for the future study. Our first lesson is typically longer than the regular lessons thus there is no discount, which is super fair.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

We have both remote and in-person lessons currently. In the past 18 months I only offered remote lessons. This Pandemic will stay for a long time, and thus I offer the in-person lessons between 9/10 and 10/30 to allow my students to get touch with the base of the in-person lessons. We will be returning to the 100% remote lessons again from 11/1. Due to the rising risks in the past 2 weeks, we don’t offer in-person trial lessons. Rather, everyone will need to go through a remote interview, and then we will see if we like and can work with each other. From there, you will be able to choose to stay for 100% remote lessons, or to determine if you are eligible for the in-person lessons between 9/10 and 10/30” I am a super friendly and quite serious teacher for piano lessons, so when you contact me, please do not just push a button to ask “my availability.” Contacting me Only when you are serious enough to looking for high-quality piano lessons in the long run. Our first meeting will be a trial lesson with true consultation/evaluation. When you contact me, please give me more detailed information on what you would like to achieve in the future. The guideline is as below: . 1) you need a consultation/piano lesson 2) you have a piano and are ready for setting up the consultation/piano lesson 3) you need both skill/knowledge evaluations and a discussion for the future guidance 4) you could visit the studio website for more detailed studio information including the basic studio policy - the full studio policy will be discussed if we like each other and can work together 5) the length of the lessons: young students - 30, 45, or 60 minutes; adults - 45 or 60 minutes. 6) send the one-time fee for the trial lesson, via Zelle 7) notify me after completing the transaction 8) upon confirmation, you will receive a document, along with a link to the scheduled lesson. 9) we will perform an evaluation in the trial lesson 10) we will have a discussion on the future study plan with the detailed studio policy * After reading the guideline above, contacting me only when you are ready to book a trial lesson. ** Fee to the trial lesson is non-refundable

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I graduated from the top-tier music conservatory in the world, and my teachers were at the top-tiers in their specialties. Piano Performance, Music Theory, Music History, and Piano Pedagogy have been my core studies altogether since the very beginning. I had professional trainings for 30 years, and thus I was trained to pay attention to everything. Pretty much, I am interested in keeping improving myself in the related works. I am able to handle students at all levels, including beginners, amateurs, piano majors in both undergraduate and graduate levels, etc.
