Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do you wear to swing dance lessons?

Swing dance is an increasingly popular style of ballroom dance with a dress code that reflects its roots in the 1920s-1940s jazz era. Although many studios don’t require historically accurate costumes for their private dance lessons, many dancers want to dress the part. You can wear clothes that are comfortable to move — and sweat — in, such as T-shirts and loose skirts or khakis. Or for an appropriately vintage look, women often wear shirt dresses with a knee-length A-line or circle skirt that allows for plenty of swishy movement. Men usually opt for a button-down shirt and trousers. The most important part of a swing dance outfit is the shoes. Both men and women can opt for simple sneakers, like Keds, or leather dance shoes, such as saddle shoes. Until you have several dance lessons under your belt, stay away from heels.

How much do dance lessons cost?

Adults who want to learn to dance, whether to prepare for a wedding or to meet new people, often enjoy taking dance lessons from an experienced dance instructor. Instructors may offer classes one-on-one to individual students or couples, or to small groups. The national average cost for a dance instructor ranges from $30 to $50. Some studios offer a discounted introductory lessons or group lessons, as well as package deals that are more affordable than paying for individual lessons. Some dance instructors will travel to the student’s home, which usually costs more, while others hold small-group sessions in their studios. If you choose a small-group class, expect to pay less than for individual dance lessons.

Absolutely fantastic! Anya responded in record time and answered any question that I had. When we showed up to the venue she picked us out of a crowd and made sure to introduce herself! She made us feel like we were at home. My fiancé and I are taking dance lessons for our wedding and he was skeptical. He doesn’t dance. After our first lesson he was hooked! The staff and dance instructors are all very knowledgeable and make you feel like family. We have signed up for continuous classes for the next year!

Gayle is a delightful, intelligent, creative instructor. In 40 minutes she was able to teach 4 couples, 2 generations, with strong left brain tendencies, who didn’t know how to dance together, how to do the basic rumba. Then she built on the basics and by the end of the 1st lesson we knew a 2nd alternative plus how to rotate around a dance floor. Gayle is a master communicator - she lays a solid foundation and deftly builds layer after layer, using encouragement and very soft coaching to bring out the best. And most importantly she makes it incredibly fun! I highly recommend Gayle and truly appreciate her help with prepping us for dancing at my son’s wedding.
