Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project(s).

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Does an electrician need to enter my home?

Whether an electrician needs to enter your home depends on the type of work that needs to be completed. Any work on receptacles, lights and more located on the inside or outside of your house will likely require an electrician to enter your home.

Ask electricians in your area to perform a video consultation instead of a traditional walk-through to assess the project. During the consultation, they should be able to tell you if they’ll need to enter your home or not.

Very fast with response and scheduling, accommodating for date and time, showed up right on time and clean in workmanship. Went above and beyond to install an additional outlet and was up to date on latest building codes. Very friendly and professional - we've found our electrician for future projects.

Confirmed on 8th December that they will come and install EV charging outlet on 13th December. I specifically confirmed if the guy will be here or not, and I was told yes. On 13th I called them up again when no one was here. The lady in office told me she will check where the electrician is at and how long it will take to reach and will call me back. But few mins later the electrician message saying that they have to cancel the appointment and there is not appointment available for the entire week. He then offered me if I can wait for a week, when I asked him yo confirm the date and time for the next week, he said he cannot confirm anything. What kind of company cannot confirm their schedule. There was no heads up regarding cancellation of my appointment, I stopped following up with other electricians after guys from northland electric confirmed he will be here. Now I have to again go through the entire process and wait for getting new appointments. Don’t trust these people even when they confirm.

We got an electric outlet installed on the wall above the fireplace. Alex was amazing at getting the work done with minimal damage to the drywall. And he finished it soon too, most of electricians said they will take more than 3 hours for the installation but Alex took just 15 mins 😊

Eduardo was PREFECT! Extremely courteous, prompt, friendly, and professional! He took the time to explain what he's doing and how things work. I've worked as a managed a team of field techs before and this guy is definitely someone I'd hire for a project. I can easily recommend him to anyone I know who needs an electrician as I'd know they're in good hands!

I have worked with Wallace on three times including vent hood wiring and relocation, ceiling light + ceiling fan + security camera installation, and receptacle replacement especially since a different pro I worked with failed to make the vent hood work as expected. I highly recommend their work. Not only they did work that was beyond my expectations but also he taught me how to install small things myself! They are one of the best electricians and pros I have worked with!

Chris was an absolute pro and satisfied my electricial needs while other electricians were non responsive. Chris installed a new electrical outlet for me within 3 days of first contacting him. He was timely with his visit, pleasant to work with, and gave me high confidence in his competency. Be sure to do your homework on what is a fair price for your project ahead of time to be prepared to negotiate if needed. I'll be calling him again for his services in the future.

We had a great experience using Live Wire Electric! - Justin was responsive and flexible in scheduling an appointment time. - Easy to communicate with, and called ahead to let us know when he would be arriving. He even came out to our house on Sunday! - More importantly he was able to diagnose and fix an electrical issue that 2 previous electricians had been unable to fix! - Professional, friendly, reasonable rates. We will be using Live Wire Electric for all our future electrical needs. Thanks Justin.

This "pro" posted a website link that does not work because he really doesn't have a website. He also had no business card or vehicle identification so he honestly could have been anybody! His appearance was disheveled, unshaven and he was sporting some serious body odor. He was called out to look at a ceiling fan located only feet from the front door, but he insisted on looking at the whole house, opening cabinets, closets, even looking in my garage! It was kind of creepy. He had no answer for me on the ceiling fan but wanted to know what I did for a living and what I could do to help him. He would not leave, just lingered at the front door. He was supposed to write me an estimate and he didn't do that either. I looked him up on L&I website and he is NOT a licensed electrician. BBB had no record of him either. I don't know who is he but homeowner beware. This was a scary dude.
