Introduction: If you want your piano studies to be a fun and enjoyable experience, I think you have come to the right place. After over 30 years of teaching piano and two music degrees, I have found that humor and devising interesting ideas approaches to learning help my students achieve the greatest success. After all, studies have shown that we learn best when were smiling 😀. A free introductory lesson is the best way to find out if I'm the right teacher for you or your child. Prior to that, we could discuss by phone what you're goals and aspirations are for you or your child and I could to answer any questions you might have about my approach. Many teachers and students shy away from taking lessons online. But after over a year and a half of teaching online, I have devised many techniques to make the process go very smoothly and effectively. For instance, students frequently receive customized audios and videos to help them practice throughout the week. Each student's lesson plan is based on their own musical interests, goals and learning style. Along with fundamental skill-building, I also teach improvisation, composition, theory and music history. Students are encouraged to use the skills they develop to express themselves, enlarge their musical horizons and develop a vision for themselves as a musician, in whatever capacity. I teach all levels and all ages from six years old and above. I have 2 degrees in music from the University of Washington. I majored in piano performance and music history with special emphasis on pedagogy and advanced theory. I endeavor to continue growing as a teacher and musician through workshops, classes and independent study. For example, I began studying vocal jazz ten years ago and have performed in a non-professional capacity in several venues, including Tula's in Seattle. Taking lessons and performing on a second instrument has not only improved my overall musicianship, it has also reminded me of the challenges of being a beginner. My grandparents were professional musicians and their joy with music and teaching influenced me to want to follow in their footsteps. I hope to pass their love of music on to my students. Guiding others as they develop their own relationship with music is a great privilege and deeply rewarding endeavor. I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to do what I love. I look forward to having the opportunity to work with you!

Piano Lessons

I'm actually still working with Mrs. Lauri, and I have to say I am enjoying piano lessons from her. I cannot believe I am actually playing the piano right now. It is something I have dreamed about for such a long time. That said, we have many a good laugh; I'm moving along in my lessons; and she is very kind and has an abundance of tips to help me progress when I hit snags in how to play new pieces. She is aware of my goal/reason for learning piano, and she has made it clear several times that she believes I will be able to reach my goal. She is definitely encouraging me and making sure I progress to my goals at a steady pace. I will add anyone who wants to learn how to play an instrument has to be willing to put in the work! If I'm not in front of the piano, then I'm practicing by memory with my hands. My last week was busy and so I wasn't able to practice everyday, but she was gracious with me, understanding, and still challenged me with new material. I truly enjoy working with Mrs. Lauri! Use her as your instructor!

Piano Lessons

Working with Lauri has been an absolute DREAM! I'm 23 and am just getting back into piano after years of lessons on and off as a child. I've had many different piano teachers over the years and she's by far been the best! I told Lauri at the start that I wanted to focus on sight reading (I started basically at a beginner level with her) and she has made sure to give me any tips and tricks she has to make sure I achieve my goals. Even with remote lessons, (we live in completely different states) she has managed to bring back my love of piano and help me improve SO MUCH. Lauri makes sure to focus on what's important to me, while also supplementing/offering other styles and ways to learn. She is SO KNOWLEDGEABLE, which makes her wonderful to work with. I truly feel like I found an expert, but one that cares about me and wants to share her knowledge. I would recommend her a thousand times over!

Piano Lessons

Lauri is exactly the teacher I was looking for! She is friendly, personable and professional. I have taken lessons before and Lauri has quickly helped me remember what I had forgotten. She works at my pace and takes care in selecting pieces that I like, so that my lessons are enjoyable and I am motivated to practice. She clearly takes time between lessons to plan and prepare for upcoming sessions which shows me how much she cares about teaching. With her help I am progressing more quickly than I expected. I look forward to continuing lessons and gaining even more knowledge.

Piano Lessons (for children or teenagers)

Mrs. Lauri is a perfect teacher-student match for our daughter, who is eight and just starting piano. With two piano performance degrees in the family, but no time to teach, we were looking for just the right mix of solid teaching technique, skill, and personality match. We also wanted to find a teacher who would be willing to keep us in the process and utilize the unique situation of knowledgeable parental help at home. Mrs. Lauri has been an excellent choice, and our daughter loves going to piano lessons! We are extremely pleased with our daughter's progress, and highly recommend Lauri Mitchell.

Piano Lessons (for children or teenagers)

I can't say enough wonderful things about Lauri! I came to know her after requesting a piano teacher for our 4 year old daughter via Thumbtack. She is a lovely woman who has enriched our daughter's life immensely through their lessons. She is always on time, her lessons are age appropriate and have the ideal blend of formal technique and fun. She is patient with my young child and one of the most important things was we trust her. Whenever you bring someone into your home when you have children it can be nerve wracking, but we feel completely comfortable with Lauri. Our little one is already playing several children's songs, etc. Week-to-week we see her growing and getting better. We are so pleased with Lauri and are thankful to have found such an excellent teacher. I look forward to her teaching my children for many years to come.

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

My fees are $30 per half hour, $45 for 45 minutes and $60 per hour. Included in that fee is two formal recitals a year, time researching materials and lesson planning for each student.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I build a learning profile for each individual student. This is based on their age (for example, 4 year-olds learn very differently than 8-year olds), their background in piano and music, the kinds of music that interests them and their learning style. After an initial free trial lesson, I can begin to design a program that is uniquely suited to them. Their program will evolve over time as they develop as students and as I continue to assess their progress.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Bachelor of Arts in Music and Bachelor of Music in Music History. Areas of emphasis were piano performance, piano pedagogy, music history and music theory. Continued education through workshops, post-university private lessons, colloquia on teaching theory. One of my hobbies is ongoing research on current brain science with regard to learning and teaching.
