Anthony and team came through in a huge way. I originally had lowes contracted to install my basement floors, but after 4 months of dealing with their crap I said enough is enough. Unfortunately I was left with floors that needed to be finished with no knowledge or time to do them myself. This is where Anthony stepped in. I called Anthony and in less than 3 hours he was at my house inspecting the project. Later that same day he called with a bid. At that point I was blown away, Anthony had accomplished in one day what Lowes was unable to do in 4 months. I immediately asked when he could come by and complete the work. The following week Anthony and team were at my house installing the floor. Once his team arrived I had a feeling of comfort, I just new these guys were the ones. After inspecting my floor I asked if he was able to take care of installing baseboard to my floors. Without hesitation He agreed. So in one day, Anthony had installed 200srfr of flooring, cased 4 doors, and installed/painted roughly 800ft of baseboard. After the job was completed he came back to do a walk through with me. He addresses any issues I had (which were very few) and made them right. His quality of work is second to none and his attention to detail is impeccable. I can't begin to express my thanks and appreciation to Anthony and his crew. I also left out one important detail. This was all done over Labor Day Weekend. When everyone else was sitting back and spending time with family, Anthony was at my house sweating away. Furthermore, because of the fantastic work Anthony had done in my basement I also requested him to complete additional work at my house. Needless to say Anthony has gained a customer for life.

During a full week of heavy rainfall we had a flood happen in our newly finished basement of our 1942 home which had been recently remodeled with an additional story. Needless to say I was extremely stressed as our carpets were soaked and I had no idea how the water had come into our basement. That same night I contacted Robert via email (found his services on Thumbtack) and he immediately responded and personally came to our house the next morning to view the damages. He had a restoration company come out that same day to pull out the carpet pads and dry out our basement. A few days later, after the basement was dried out, Robert personally came back out to investigate the cause of the water intrusion. With the added story to our house our fear was that the additional weight had cracked the foundation. But after pulling out the drywall he noticed the insulation around our old, unused chimney was soaked. There were also old water stains coming out of our old furnace flue which was connected to the old chimney. Robert proceeded to go outside and do numerous tests around the foundation as well as climbing to the top of our chimney to find that it was improperly capped. When he tested the top of the chimney by spraying water up towards it from the ground, as if it were raining, we witnessed water coming into the basement where the old water stains were apparent. Robert resealed the cap and wrote out a detailed report on what needs to be fixed to ensure a leak from the chimney would never happen again. Robert also directly called our insurance to explain what he found which helped our case in getting insurance to cover the costs. By Robert accurately detecting the cause of the flood insurance covered the costs of this project. Robert was very responsive and trustworthy. I could quickly tell that he was on our side and was compassionate towards our problem. His subcontractors were very nice and they got the job done right and efficiently. I highly recommend Robert for any home emergencies. He is extremely knowledgeable, trustworthy, compassionate and an all around good guy.

The job was a earthquake retrofit. I had spent six months on the wait list with another earthquake retrofit company, only to be dropped four weeks before they were supposed to start the work, so I was in a huge panic, because I had a larger scope project of an entire basement remodel scheduled to start as soon as the retrofit was done. Needless to say, I was terribly worried I wouldn't be able to find another contractor who would be able to do the work. I VERY luckily found Sound Pacific, who recognized my time crunch, and were happy to step in and take over. They were extremely competent, well organized, and got the job done in the correct amount of time, so that my basement remodel could proceed on time. The best part about working with them is they are very communicative at all times as to what is happening with the project, and were very good at asking questions as to what the customer wanted. I very much enjoyed working with them, and would gladly recommend them to anyone. If my basement contractor falls through on the job, I have already informed him I have a great team who I would be thrilled to have takeover. Thank you Derek and Michael for all your hard work. Sincerely, HG, West Seattle

Our 2-story house with daylight basement was painted and the deck railing refinished. The service was top-notch right from the beginning; was very knowledgeable and gave good advice. Flexible about the scheduling and on how I wanted the cost estimate broken out and then revised. They were respectful of the neighbors and did an excellent job! HIGHLY recommend.

Tom was a great guy to work with. He was professional, good with communication and put up with my young family around him at times with a smile (which was beyond the call of duty). He paid attention to detail and went the extra mile to get my laminate kitchen floor and basement floor just right. Would hire him again.

Cliff Taylor from Taylor Made Construction has done numberous jobs on the house I own with my sister. It started with a new roof and gutters, and has continued thru additional jobs including the remodel of the downstairs into a separate apartment, which included adding a full kitchen, dining room, extra bedroom and closet space. He fixed the water leakage problem we had in the basement by adding a new drainfield in our yard along the side of the house, which he later covered with a new sidewalk. It's so nice to walk from the back of the house to the front without walking thru the wet grass. He enclosed and finished our back porch with screen doors so we no longer get all the dirt and leaves blowing in from all directions and added fans to keep it cool in the summer. On top of that he added a new deck off the porch all enclosed by a fence. We now have a very nice private deck for the bbq, set up with chairs for watching the sunset. He also helped us with security by putting up motion sensor lights and cameras all along our property. I am so amazed by all his work. Top of the line, done quickly and efficiently. When he worked on our roof, there was never any nails or garbage left around the house, he always worked without interupting us and was very concise and clear about the cost and time needed to complete the job. The downstairs was turned from a single bedroom, living space and unfinished basement into a complete apartment. We now have a full kitchen, two bedroom, one bath rentable living space which adds a ton of value to our house. And the best part about all the work is that is looks like it was always that way. You can't tell a remodel even happened. He even fixed our hot tub!! I would highly recommend Cliff Taylor for any job, large or small. I have already recommended him to my family and he has done great work for them as well.

Mike did a lot of contract work in our daylight basement for us when we moved into our new house. He completely remodeled our bathroom, replaced carpets in rooms, put in new paint, set up new lights, and replaced a hideous bench with something better looking. He even set up our entertainment center and replaced our court lights. We were very pleased with how the final work came out (the way the basement looks is night and day), and we would employ him again for future contract work to make improvements to our house.

I had a water loss in the kitchen and basement. Contacted Steffany and she was out the next day. So far she has been great to work with. Just had our meeting with the insurance adjuster and he was impressed with her bid for the remodel. She is a wealth of information when it comes to insurance claims. I'm excited for her team to get going on the project.

If you are lucky enough to have Bill do your project for you, you are lucky indeed. He renovated our entire basement and did an absolutely beautiful job. His experience and workmanship are outstanding, and he dealt creatively and well with my "interesting" project ideas. He was on time and on budget and a straight shooter. I can and will recommend him for any project.

I had an amazing experience with Burke Craig Construction, and as someone who has worked with a lot of contractors, I can honestly say that is very hard to come by. Not only did I have him complete the fence that we initially sought out to have done, but we were so impressed with his quality of work, price, and integrity, that we hired him to do a full basement remodel as well! And when I say basement remodel, there is no way to fully explain just went into it, but it was a major undertaking, and he absolutely knocked it out of the park. We will definitely be hiring him for any and all future projects. I would also strongly recommend him to anyone looking for someone who can come in on budget (fair prices as well), top quality work, as well as a great person to work with.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

      What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

      • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
      • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
      • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
      • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.

Be sure to check out our smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
