My microwave install turned into a microwave, drywall, marble tile, and ductwork project, but Stephen was able to handle whatever complications arose. I'm really glad I hired him rather than try to do it myself.

He helped me finish a project that had been left incomplete by a previous handyman. The project involved ripping out bad drywall work and re-doing it. I look forward to having him come back to finish the exterior work around the new window.

Jose did a great job repairing a leak in the drywall around our skylight. He had to replace moldy insulation and drywall twice the amount originally anticipated and then apply texture and paint. He also repaired 2 other areas. He completed the job on time and it looks spectacular!! We are thrilled and highly recommend Jose to one and all. We would definitely use him again.

We hired Steve to install rough plumbing, a tub, shower door, and drywall and to skim coat 2 textured ceilings to make them smooth. We really appreciated Steve's transparency in his quote, as well as his quality and speed of work. Steve gave us a fair and detailed quote including expected time to finish. Steve and the guys he brought with him worked quickly without compromising quality. We are happy to be hiring Steve to do more work at our house later in the summer.

Jaime is meticulous and likes to do the project "right". In the day of contractors that claim they can do things, which they should really not do - Jaime knows his stuff in all things drywall, walls, wall texturing, wall finishing, wall repairs. I hired Jaime to retexturize my walls, finish new drywall (taping, mudding, the works), and patch drywall and retexturize. Because the project was in a condo, there were various restrictions on when work is conducted, keeping the place super tidy (building has dark carpets), getting water from the building bathrooms (water has been turned off for my unit)....Jaime was kind in working around these weird restrictions. And he took out the drywall garbage as well.

Cedo was communicative and did excellent work. He installed drywall in my ceiling that a plumber had to cut out; Cedo's work is seamless and his pricing was competitive (before and after pictures attached). I highly recommend him!

Dennis' work is impeccable. We had him frame and drywall a space in our kitchen for a built-in fridge. His measurements were perfect down to the millimeter. His quote was reasonable, he came on time and cleaned up after each day. He took significantly longer to complete the job than he had anticipated, but that is also because he took the time to do it correctly. I would hire him to complete more work in my home in the future.

Chris is the ultimate craftsman and did a beautiful job for us. We hired him to repair the 30 year old drywall in our garage that had never been painted. He did a fantastic job drywalling, repairing, and painting, and now the garage is the best looking room in our house. Thanks, Chris! Paula

We used All Purpose Drywall for a rehab project and were thrilled with the results. They installed drywall on the ceiling, walls and patched several holes in addition to completing a new closet we had framed in. Their work is excellent and I would not hesitate to use them again. The price was very reasonable and they were able to complete the job on time.

Mike's finishing work was done very well and in a timely manner, in a knockdown style in the upstairs area, and a smooth as silk finish in the lower level. Only problem was our shop vac running amuck, sending drywall dust all over. Mike was quick to help remedy that situation. He also charges a reasonable rate for the work he does.

PNW was a near-obvious choice among the 3 places we got estimates from to install insulation in our attic. All were very professional and responsive, but PNW came in with the best price to boot. We were also really happy with their work, they were quick and efficient and a pleasure to have in our home for a couple of hours.

2.5 days of work was accomplished over a 5-day period. Jesse, the owner, and two workers repaired and repainted the drywall in a few areas, installed new attic stairs, moved a lighting fixture, and tiled a small backsplash. Some appointments were rescheduled by Goodface with notice. The work was of good quality and reasonably priced. There was a bit of difficulty communicating with the workers as English was not their first language, but Jesse checked in daily to ensure everything was running smoothly. The workers cleaned up at the end of each day, but final cleanup was still necessary (and expected) when the job was done.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

    • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
    • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

    • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
    • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
    • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
