Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

After just 2 sessions I'm already seeing tremendous improvements with my dog, an 11 year old shepherd mix rescue with dog-aggression issues. I recently started working at Amazon and want to take my dog to work, but her behavior with other dogs (barking, growling, lunging) would be unacceptable in the workplace. I am confident Jevry will quickly get my dog to be well-behaved around other dogs. Jevry also very honest, talking me out of a 9 session training plan, telling me she thinks a 5 session plan would be enough. Her price is a great deal; it would be hard to find such a good trainer at this price.

Martha is wonderful. We were having some fighting between our dogs along with a couple other issues. I was happily surprised for the quick response from both of our dogs to her training techniques. Thank you Martha!!

We adopted two doodle puppies. We needed someone to come help train our pups. We saw the reviews for Martha and decided to give her a call. She showed up and one of our pups for the first time jumped out of the playpen. Martha said let me go to my car, she returned with one of her training tools (although that was over two weeks ago) our dog has never jumped out of their playpen again. For me, Martha is more about training the owners than training the dogs. The dogs are looking for someone to be in charge so that they can just relax. I would recommend her to anyone considering training. We have lots of lessons to go through, but, we are hopeful that with aunt Martha‘s help we will have good our pups… Will be good citizens.

martha is incredible ! i learned a lot and noticed a big difference in my relationship with my dog right away, based on what she taught me. very knowledgeable. my dog is reactive and resource guards with other dogs, she taught me information about my body language, responsiveness, mindset, and my own interpretation of dog behavior. she called me out on not being a strong leader, and gave me specific examples that she noticed just in our time together that made so much sense. i spend A LOT of time working with my dog, she knows many words and constantly gets comments on how well trained she is....but i’ve never been able to acquire the necessary knowledge that i learned from martha in conversations with other trainers and watching literally hundreds of hours of youtube videos. unlike other trainers she works with you at a lower rate for hours, to holistically help you. she taught me strategies to teach my dog a, “friend” cue to let her know that the approaching dog/human is not a threat. she also taught me the game of, “lose your dog” super valuable notion that at dog parks practice walking in the opposite direction of your dog, to teach them to chase YOU instead of people who constantly scream their dogs name until it loses meaning, chasing them with no avail. she also makes herself available to you via phone anytime afterwards, which is unheard of and completely invaluable. she actually cares about the well being of you and your dog as a team, most trainers are adamantly only informed by one approach, she has MANY years of experience (i believe she said 50!!) and is informed by many kinds of approaches, and seems to be open to new ones as well! i interviewed 5 trainers before i decided on martha. would recommend to anyone!

I recently finished a private session with Martha. Our Aussie is a a smart and classic, energetic herding breed with a fear of strangers. I initially chose Martha based on her amazing reviews and chose to work with her due to her experience working with herding breeds and in particular helping dogs with their fears of strangers. Martha’s comprehensive private training covers not only all the issues you want to work through, but also lessons about health, leadership and various other topics. I valued this holistic approach to dog training, as it’s not something you get from traditional dog training classes. I noticed immediate results during our session with my dog’s reaction to strangers with coaching from Martha. She taught me specific exercises and gave me practical tools to help my dog become more comfortable around strangers. I’m excited at the fact to continue working with Martha by using my phone consultation privileges to help make my Aussie grow up into a fine dog. I highly recommend you choose Martha for any dog training needs, especially if you have specific issues you want to address and correct.

We (my dog Louie and I) looove Jey. From day one, Louie recognized Jey as a confident pack leader and I was comforted with Jey's daily text updates on Louie's progress. My dog was starting to get on an aggressive path so I signed him up for boarding and six private lessons. Worth every dollar as Jey helped me be a better leader, trained Louie advanced basics (sit, down, heel, etc. but with longer duration and better focus) and still checks in periodically. A thousand thank yous to Emerald Dog Training.

Martha was very responsive and knowledgeable about dog behavior and was able to coach me how to train my dog. Before he was not able to stay home alone even just while I went to get grocery’s. Now he can stay home while I get groceries and even go to work for 5 hours.

We have a 4 year old German Shepherd Dog, Lila, that is a perpetual puppy--extremely high energy and playful. We were having a lot of issues while out walking or hiking with her because of constant pulling and leash reactivity around other dogs. We found Julie and were immediately impressed with her resume of handling large dogs (Malamutes) and training them through positive reinforcement. Julie has been full of valuable tips and strategies that have focused on positive reinforcement, repetition, and the gradual increase of distractions when training. After several sessions and lots of practice in the neighborhood, we are really starting to see results. Taking Lila out for a stroll is now much more pleasant and manageable. We have thoroughly enjoyed working with Julie and would absolutely recommend her!

Martha is an incredibly effective trainer! I was hesitant to call a trainer because my 6-month mini aussie Cooper is such a great dog, but he was having issues with over excitement with people and dogs while walking on a leash. I am going to be transitioning into a new job where I will be bringing Cooper with me to work, so I wanted to make sure he was well behaved enough to not be disruptive in an office environment. Boy am I glad I called Martha!!!! Not only did she correct Cooper’s leash behavior that same day she came out to meet us, but she also assisted me in coming up with a plan to transition Cooper successfully into an office. She gave me the right tools and corrective behavior template to be able to correct any future problems Cooper has now that he’s nearing his teenage years. Martha is very holistic and knows how to ask the right questions to really understand your training needs and your pet’s personality. I was completely captivated by all of the knowledge Martha shared during our training session. For months I have been researching training methods, watching you tube videos, and making some progress with training Cooper, but it was just absolutely incredible how quickly Martha’s methods work compared to the other strategies I’ve been trying. Calling Martha for your training needs is a no brainer.

I have a lot of information to work with thanks to the recorded tapes Martha creates. I also found out why my rescue dog had such a strong reaction to the vet and another trainer. There are several exercises I need to work on with her to correct a few of her issues.

Martha is truly amazing! I have a 5 year old long-haired Chihuahua who has been displaying fear-based aggression for the past 4 years. I've been trying to "deal" with his behavior attempting to fix but never with any success. Our walk path has always been determined by walking away from and avoiding other dogs. I was always stressed going on hikes with Choco because I knew I would have to face other dogs in narrow trails. Martha came by today and met Choco for the first time and we already made great progress! She is incredibly knowledgeable. We talked for over 3-4 hours about how we should communicate with dogs, how dogs communicate, how food and other things can have an impact on a dog's behavior, etc. There were so many aspects that I didn't know about how to communicate with dogs and how our behaviors and energy affect our dogs. We went out for a brief walk after the conversation to observe Choco's behavior and Choco started to catch on to Martha's training tool almost right away. What I couldn't do for the past 4 years, Martha could in a matter of few hours! After the initial meeting in person, she also offers free phone follow ups, which is such a relief for me because her guidance today made such a difference. I'd recommend Martha to any pet pawrent who is looking to do their initial puppy training, or for an adult dog behavior modification like me!

Julie was very helpful in getting my 1 year old reactive rescue German Shepard to stop lunging and barking. She stayed with me as I developed trust with my dog. Taught her to calm down, walk on leash calmly, basic commands. We now enjoy working on agility training. Julie is wonderful at assesing the strengths and weaknesses of the owner and the dog. Then helping the two to grow together. I now have a fabulous member of my family.

We just completed a full training session with Martha. I truly wish every dog owner could experience her services and benefit from her knowledge. We covered so much in our time together and learned so much from her. Martha is an excellent teacher and quickly demonstrated so many things for us, getting an immediate response from our dog, Maggie. I can’t recommend Martha’s services enough. For the value we received, she way undercharges!

My husband and I hired Jevry to help us with our 50 lb male dog Leto. He is a very nervous dog and expresses it through aggression. He is dog and human aggressive. He hasn't bitten any humans but has tried and has a history of dog fighting. The first session was great. My dog responded well and the use of the prong collar seemed easy and humane. We did our homework every day 10 minutes a day, plus a walk. We also transferred what we learned to our female dog with no issue. The second session however, Jevry basically choked my dog out with a prong collar for about five minutes. She tried to get him to lay down and when he didn't she tightened the pronge collar by removing two links and then used her foot as a leverage point so that she could create a doward force with his leash and collar. When he yelped, pooped himself and tried to bite her boot out of pain she had me muzzle him. Jevry then proceeded to try and force him to lay down without any verbal command given. He fought her hard but finally gave into laying down. After she left our home our dog had a partially prolapsed eye, a cut on his right, rear paw, a bloody tounge and a limp. She told us that these injuries are normal. He can't sit down due to pain and is so confused about what we want from him. He has been set back almost three weeks in terms of aggression toward strangers and trust in our leadership. This experience was not what I expected. I did not expect a professional dog trainer to do what she did. It was aweful to watch and probably even more aweful to be the one with the collar on. I don't even know how I feel about the prong collar anymore either. At first it seemed like such an amazing tool but now I'm afraid to use it with my dog for fear of him being too scared to enjoy walking or respond to training. During session one it worked and helped me communicate with my dog but then I saw what it was capable of when used the way I saw Jevry use it. Do your own research about prong collars and decide for yourself but for us this particular use (tightening and holding the collar for long periods of time) was over the top aggressive and doesn't work for us. We have asked for a refund of the sessions that Jevry has not booked out for us yet. We are hoping she does the right thing and helps us pay to hire a different trainer and a vet visit to address our dogs eye.

Julie has been amazing in training us on how to train our rescue. She has been very responsive via email/text/phone, and shows up early or on time. She is focused and does not waste time working on the basics and moving onto higher level stuff when our dog was ready. She tailored her teachings to things specific to our dog. For example he was afraid of our dark apartment stairwell that has a lot of sound echo, and would bark and lunge at our neighbors. She quickly identified specific ways to reinforce positive behaviors and now he is fine. She also helped him do better on walks without pulling on the leash and learning manners for meeting other dogs. He had resource guarding problems and she helped us with that too. We have had him for over two months now and he is getting socialized at the dog park regularly. We even went on our first hike together and he was a champ. We’ve only had two sessions so far and are so pleased with all of the progress he has made. We are so grateful for Julie and her expertise.

Working with Julie was the best decision I made. Scout, a heeler-border collie mix, was exceedingly possessive and lacked basic commands. We initially lived in a rural area where being off leash was not an issue, but with moving to a city crowded with other people and dogs, training became a necessity. After working with Julie, Scout now responds positively to commands and understands what I want from her. Now she is much more approachable when it comes to strangers and other dogs. I highly recommend working with Julie. The overall experience was exceedingly reassuring and insightful. -Kelsey

My husband and I are getting ready to sell our home and move. We realized that now would be a good time to work on our dog's (Ali) aggressive behavior and barking - before we get settled into our new home. Martha was incredibly thorough - from making suggestions about Ali's diet (to help with her allergies) to amazing tools to train and redirect Ali's behavior. We immediately saw results!

Martha is AMAZING! I am so thankful that I was able to have her do training work with my family. We adopted a 6yr old Chiweenie from a rescue and learned pretty quickly that we needed help. It has been about 10 days since Martha was at our home and we have a more peaceful home, a happier dog, and hopeful humans. Martha is truly an expert in her field. Thank you for all of your insights and expertise Martha. We are on the right track, and Mac is making great progress.

Rebecca is amazing! She came to our house for 1:1 training sessions with our 10 week old Corgi. We worked with Rebecca for 4 sessions after that and could not be more pleased with the experience. She was always punctual, made us feel comfortable and we accomplished a lot in each session. Even after the first session our puppy’s biting decreased significantly. We were very surprised! Rebecca is very intuitive and knowledgeable. She provided us with great advice and tricks that really work. She was able to address our puppy’s specific needs and behaviors immediately as they arose. In addition, she showed us how to clip nails, brush teeth and taught us how to socialize our puppy with puppy play dates. Dog training with Rebecca is a great investment and we are very happy to have found her! I highly recommend Rebecca.

Martha is a master at what she does. Our dogs had started fighting after years of living peacefully, and after working with her we understood more of their tensions and rivalry. Good leaders are needed for the pack to feel secure and we were letting them rule the household. Martha also helped us understand how to communicate with them and taught us about how our energy impacts them. At the end she ran some magnetic wands over beagle and said she felt an inner middle ear imbalance release. Given he has had some issues that we have not been able to explain medically, that was super interesting. We are open minded but fairly science based, so she was a little alternative for us but regardless knows how to train dogs and help create better leadership. She did amazing work with our dogs in a very short time. My husband and I are kind of "get to the point and the specifics" kind of people and she had her own process and pace, but it was all good info. She is also reasonably priced, provides free phone follow-up and genuinely cares about your success. Highly recommend. Now we have to work on applying everything she taught us!
