I had seen Bree’s work on Facebook when a longtime friend had some pictures done for her boyfriend. My friend looked beautiful, and I wondered if my hubby would be interested in me taking any pics as a present for his big 4-0. I showed him Bree’s photos and he was all in. We looked at other photographers and their work, and we agreed Bree’s work was definitely the right style for us. I didn’t need to look like an art piece, heck, if I turned out half as gorgeous as my friend, it would all be okay by me! So I picked up the phone on a Saturday afternoon and talked to Bree. Working with Bree was easy. In one phone call I was set up for a session with so many choices I thought my head would spin. While I had the option of choosing an outfit from her extensive collection with lots of size range, I ended up using an outfit from home with one small missing piece. I could not find shoes I liked, and here was Bree to the rescue with not only one, but 3 pairs of shoes to choose the right pair! My makeup made me look at least 10 years younger, my hair was beautiful, and the Mimosas divine! Bree is really good at getting to know you in a short period of time so you are comfortable and opens up her home studio in an absolutely welcoming way. She’s good at her job, and has great passion for showing her subject in a way that is visually striking, and yet very true to the personality of the person on the other end of the camera. I was apprehensive, being in the midst of a weight loss journey, and not being as confident at photographing well, and Bree put me at ease. The only complaint I had was that I smiled so much I should have brought Vaseline for my teeth like a supermodel. :-) Then we got the images. I was so beautiful. Shames me to say I forgot I could look so beautiful. I don’t think my husband has skipped looking at the photos at least once a day since we got them back! This was a total game changer for my self confidence and I would do it again in a minute- and then do it again!

It was so great working with Zoe on a recent family photo shoot at my house. She was incredibly responsive and easy to work with. She was flexible with her schedule when I had to move the date due to one of my kids being sick. And she and her assistant, John, were great at working with my three kids during the shoot. It was a great family portrait session and the photos turned out beautifully.

We were thrilled with the pictures from Jason Kim Photography! He was easy to work with, responded quickly and agreed to meet us in our preferred location. He clearly loves his work and his enjoyment was infectious - my son reluctantly agreed to getting senior pictures taken but ended up really enjoying the process and the results. My husband and I are amateur photographers but were disappointed with our own results when trying to photograph our son, so we're so glad we decided to work with Jason. We never would have able to get such amazing results; we can take good pictures but nothing like what Jason was able to produce. And I felt like the pictures we received were better than a lot of my friends who spent much more. He's a pleasure to work with, gives great results quickly and is a great value. I highly recommend!

Katrina has a way of capturing her subjects at exactly the right time - between frowns or just at the moment that their smile lights up their entire face. For many years, she took photos of my family. The last big photoshoot she did for us was just after my step-dad was diagnosed with Alzeimers. I wanted photos that showed him as we want to remember him. Katrina took his portrait in front of his neatly organized yard tools. It was PERFECT! In a 2 hour event, we got enough photos to fill a small book. Most of the photos were candid and all of them were delightful! I wish she still lived in Houston!

I'd seen Rachel's work around the city from various contacts within my network and had wanted to use her for some headshots for a long time. But I'm one of those people who hates being in front of the camera. Knowing that she excels in making her studio sessions comfortable and enjoyable, I went ahead and made my appointment. I just had the headshots done this past weekend and WOW; I was so not disappointed. I pointed to some examples she had on the wall - some high-profile model photos - and she totally incorporated those looks in our shoot. I started out feeling super awkward and inhibited. But by the time we were finished, I actually loved some of the shots she got, even before editing. And I honestly enjoyed the shoot. Her work speaks for itself. She is cutting edge and impeccable. She is kind and engaging. She possesses that gift that artists have to get the key moment and amplify it beautifully. I am so very glad I took the time and investment to get these photos done and plan to return for some family photos soon. In my opinion, she's too good and too cheap for the quality and type of work she produces. I highly recommend using her now. She won't be undiscovered for very much longer.

I am writing this testimonial for a true artist and a professional photographer. I’ve met Jeffrey after enrolling in one of his classes many years ago. I was nicely surprised and very impressed by his knowledge of the subject and his passion for photography which make him a fine photographer. We all know that strategy matters and passion rules. Jeffrey has both in addition to being very creative and meaningful. He knows how to operate a camera, how to use it in order the get the best effect, and always capture the essence of the image. After meeting him as an instructor, I decided to use his service for my professional business because I know he would capture the important as he really gets the thorough picture of what we want to see and get. Photography is an art and Jeffrey is truly a competent photographer and an artist in his field. He is very experienced and knows his camera and any other camera students bring in the classroom. As a teacher, he is able to help you getting to know your camera and using it at its best. As a personal professional photographer, he knows what you need and the result is always impressive.

I hired Jennifer for a self-directed shoot (as I was unable to attend to art-direct). She was responsible for coordination with the subject, and it was up to her to make sure everything went smoothly and the photos were exactly what we needed. Jennifer delivered. Thanks!

John is by far one of the best photographers we've worked with—we hire photographers in 12 cities for corporate events we produce. He arrived early, took all the shots on our shot list, and is just a friendly guy. His work is just as great—the composition, color, and style. It's not easy to find a corporate photographer whose work and professionalism are of high-quality. Duffernutter Photography is our top pick for Seattle photography—and it should be yours too!

Andrew Achong is AMAZING! He delivers high level professionalism with a unique creativity I have yet to see others exude. In fact, when we were taking bridal portraits at the White House hotel in Biloxi, several staff members commented on the uniqueness of the shoot. They said that they see photographers in there constantly but all of them take the same shots. Not Andrew. He was laying on the ground, climbing on furniture and ledges, making you laugh (or in my case, helping me not be awkward) all to get the PERFECT shot. He definitely knows how to capture the moment. He loves black and white photos but, of course, is amazing with color as well. He shares a passion for photography that so many photographers have lost. You can tell he has fun doing it and that shows in his work. He is super flexible, efficient and accommodating. So much so that he was able to get my bridal portraits shot, edited, printed and displayed in less than a week before the wedding. Delivering the impossible! He is an exceptional guy and an even more remarkable photographer. He is incredible to work with and you will not be disappointed in his shots. He excels in capturing action shots with impeccable timing. He is super responsive and we always received our pictures from him so quickly! I used him for family portraits (including one baby and a toddler {takes skill}), bridal portraits, rehearsal dinner, and our wedding. I can’t say enough positive things about Andrew. I absolutely, without a doubt, recommend his services to EVERYONE. You will love reliving the moment with his photos.

I definitely recommend Natalie and will hire her again in the future! I've hired her 3 times, both as a photographer and retoucher. 1. She photographed / retouched our small family wedding ceremony (7 people) -- including indoor dinner and outdoor family photos. 2. She photographed / retouched our larger wedding reception (100 people) -- outdoor and night photography. 3. She took professional headshots for me. She's warm and friendly - even family members and friends who claim they don't like having their photo taken loved working with her. People loved the photos, many ordered prints of themselves/their families from our wedding. She's also great at picking interesting backgrounds and I particularly like how she coaches you to bring out your best angles. Her retouching costs more, but definitely worth it for the photos we chose to print/hang. It's natural -- no cheesy photoshopping, so everyone looks great.

She is also super responsive, which speeds up communication. We enjoyed working with Vuong and would definitely consider hiring her again the next time we have the need. I recommend her.

Camille was an awesome photographer who really made the whole experience a lot easier and better. While searching for a photographer a lot of the people I spoke to where more interested in booking you rather than trying to see if they were the right fit or not. Camille was eager and very responsive and put up with a lot of questions in the process of getting booked and really seemed like she cared. If anyone is looking I would highly recommend Camille not only is she a great photographer but she makes you feel right at home during the shoot which makes for better pictures.

Very fun and great family photos! Has a great eye, especially for outdoor photos; also works great with babies, children, preteen and teens (even when they can get in a mood!) as well as capturing those special candid moments. Thanks Candace we had such an excellent experience!

Emily was easy and fun to work with. She spent time learning about the event as well as post the shoot hand delivered the pictures in a usb (beautiful bag). Lots of photographers are great on the event date but beyond that it is so hard to get in touch with them. Emily is a true professional. The pictures have come out really well as well. Thankyou Emily for making our day special !

Jennifer did the photography for our wedding. She was so easy to work with, and the photographs are so beautiful. I cannot wait to order my book and share the photos with my friends. Her unique photographic perspective resulted in photos that stand apart from standard wedding pictures. She is a true artist and professional; I highly recommend her and will gladly use her services again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do you tip a photographer for family photos?

Tipping a photographer for family portraits is not standard etiquette. A great way to recognize a family photographer who goes above and beyond is to write them a glowing review. You probably found your photographer by reading online reviews, so paying it forward by letting everyone know how much you appreciate their work is a great gift. Write your review after they have delivered the final edited photos on time and you’ve confirmed that you’re happy with the terrific portraits they took.

What should you wear for a family photo?

A family photographer captures your family in a series of professionally edited portraits. You can be goofy, you can be formal, you can be exactly how you want to be. To that end, you can wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident — feeling good translates to looking good in photos. However, top family photographers do have some style suggestions that will make your family photos more visually cohesive:

  • Ask the photographer for color suggestions if you’re doing an outdoor photo shoot. Location and time of day can affect which shades will fade in the sunlight and what will stand out in a good way.
  • Stay away from a mix of stripes or plaids on multiple people — the effect is too busy.
  • Steer clear of tiny patterns, which blend together too much.
  • Avoid wearing matching outfits.
  • Do wear outfits that are complementary in color.
  • Choose color over black-and-white outfits.
  • Do choose a theme, such as pastels, fall colors or summer colors.
  • Opt for tonally similar colors.
  • Go easy on makeup for outdoor photo shoots.

How much do photographers charge for family portraits?

Family portraits are a great way to mark the passage of time, create lifelong keepsakes and have gorgeous-looking photos for your annual holiday card. The national average cost for hiring family photographers ranges from $150 to $200. Pricing can range higher depending on where you live, length of the photo shoot, the number of edited photos you request, and the background and reputation of your family photographer. Before hiring, make sure you understand their fees up front. Ask how many finished images are included in the quoted price and whether you will receive all the photos taken (not just edited photos). Ask whether you’ll be able to download digital photos or if you’ll have to print them or purchase digital copies through the photographer. Here are some average examples of family photographer pricing:

  • $175 for a one-hour studio session in Kansas.
  • $200 for a one-hour studio or outdoor session in Georgia. Includes two outfit changes, access to an online gallery, and about 200 high-resolution, edited digital photo files on a DVD, with permission to print.
  • $400 for a one-hour outdoor session in Southern California. Includes 25-30 fully edited photos accessible online or via CD/DVD.
  • $425 or more for a one-hour outdoor or in-home session in Illinois. Includes more than 50 professionally edited images, online access and print release.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
