I have moved 5 times in the past 12 years. Some moves were inter-state, others in-city and I have always needed to hire people for lifting and moving furniture. My experiences include young college kids that are making extra cash during the summer. These guys were usually pretty eager, but not quite experienced and needed more guiding. Other times the movers were official movers, but disinterested and almost unwilling to do the job. People Movers were so efficient, experienced and fast, that we used them twice for our two part move AND my family will use them for their upcoming moves as well. They are fast in loading and unloading furniture, boxes, etc. They dismounted our bed frame and remounted it in the new place in no time. They were friendly, fun and overall a pleasure to work with. We will continue to recommend them to everyone we know. I've had so many nightmarish experiences moving, that it was refreshing to see a moving company do its job so well!

He had a difficult time locating the address, totally understandable so we got a late start. But he picked up, delivered my bed from Seattle to Federal Way. He also reassembled it and carried on a piece of furniture I was storing in my car that I had purchased the day before. His price was very reasonable for the time and distance. I would definitely use him again in the future should the need arise! 0

This is an excellent moving company. Moving is stressful. They made the experience stress free. Came right on time, offered excellent advice about getting a street parking permit for their truck so that they had a place to park on my crowded street when they arrived. Very efficient at packing truck, delivered all of my furniture to my new condo without any damage, were polite and professional.

These guys were incredible from the first moment they were giving me a bid, packing, moving me two states and to the last piece of bubble wrap being hauled away. Every single person was warm and friendly and they did an excellent job. All my breakables were carefully packed and unpacked. They took time to put things where I wanted and I just absolutely cannot recommend them highly enough! Seriously. You have to hire them.

I cannot recommend Polo enough, his number will stay bookmarked in my phone for any landscaping needs in the future as well as recommendations to friends and family. I've been burned by contractors in various trades both residentially and in my business, it seems there are far more disreputable ones than not out conning the masses with over promised and under delivered while upping their bids or coming up with "unforeseen costs". In the state of Washington, anyone can get a contractor's license, without testing (except for electrical and plumbing), as long as he or she post a bond with the state and have insurance. As a result, there are so many "drunk uncles" out there bidding jobs and then throwing unqualified minimum wage paid workers on them to bilk unsuspecting home owners with no state oversight to protect you. It is "Buyer Beware". POLO is the opposite! After seeking bids from multiple contractors through Home Advisor and Thumbtack I sensed an immediate affinity with his professional attitude, communication, respect, and honesty. Polo brought in a crew of diligent, hard working guys focused on the tasks at hand and exceeded my always high expectations. He is personable, punctual, assessed me of all options, intelligently made recommendations that were taken (at no additional cost to the fair and agreed upon bid) and is providing additional oversight of the landscaping for a month, included at no additional fee, so as to assure plantings are established and stable. I am heartened to say Polo has diminished some of my cynicism by showing me there are still ethical young contractors establishing professional businesses the old fashioned way; by doing what they say they are going to do and then going the extra mile and actually doing more! Give Polo a call before his calendar is too full with other happy clients such as my wife and I! Mark Monroe / Mercer Island

They were going to be 1/2 hour late and called to state as much. They did not wrap much of furniture even though it was a short trip. Could have been more organized maybe, in loading truck, or have had larger truck, as had to take 2 trips for what I thought was a reduced load. Definite plus was that I had booked only 1 or 2 days before work was to be performed.

The guys were just wonderful! When we first booked the job, Brian was very accessible and the correspondence between us was good ... He send me a contract and a copy of the Washington State Consumer guide (as required by the State statute) via email.. The guys were 15 minutes behind time but I was given a call and notified in advance which I appreciated. The crew was friendly and worked efficiently. All my furniture was protected in blankets and wrapped just as shown on their page... I will use them again..

These guys are amazing. I was so stressed out about last minute move and my lack of preparation for it- I booked PNW guys the day before my move and it was the best decision. These guys worked so quickly and efficiently. Packed up and wrapped all my furniture and loaded it on the truck in about an hour, they were done moving me into my new place an hour after that. They were courteous and professional and took all the stress off of my move. I will move again in a few months and absolutely use them again.

I required Great American Moving Systems to pick up my belongings from a storage unit in Bellevue, WA and then transport them to my house in Waco, TX. I might add here that the company who put my things in the storage unit did their job very poorly. They literally threw things in there haphazardly. When the men from Great American Moving Systems arrived there, they inspected everything very carefully, made notes for the damages already suffered and the repacked pretty much everything. They had given me a 4 day window for the delivery but delivered on the first day. Everything was in the same state they left the storage. My lawyer is definitely going to sue the other company but for Great American Moving Systems, I only have admiration.

I found Sergio through Thumbtack after struggling to find any handyman services that weren't booked out weeks/months in advance and actually responded to me. I emailed Sergio from the website to initiate the process and from our initial email we began communicating via text message. Sergio came out on a Monday to provide a quote for significant yard work. The yard work included removing tons of overgrown and invasive plants on my grandmother-in-law's Kingston property (think blackberries et al) and removal of some random junk on the property, as well as cutting down of bamboo (grandma's property has a creek running through it and there's more bamboo than the fertile lands of Asia). Sergio reviewed everything we wanted done and quoted it would take about 40 hours with 3 guys to process the work and removal of everything we wanted done. The rate is $25 per hr per worker so the estimate worked out to about 3k. Of course, I'm always expecting unexpected things to come up and I have zero experience hiring someone to do significant yard work like this. Sergio and I agreed to the work via text after receiving the quote. The next Monday morning he and one of his guys showed up promptly at 8am and began hacking away at junipers and blackberry plants on the property with machetes (what. haha.) I live in Seattle so I wasn't easily able to come out and constantly check on their progress. Sergio had one guy with him on Monday and Tuesday-Thursday he had two guys with him. Initially, we planned on them finishing on Friday but something came up and they promptly came (four guys, actually) on Saturday and finished everything off. The actual cost for (approximately) 40 hours with 3 guys was about $3,300 with about $750 in dump run fees (yeah bringing all those trimmings and leaves sure get expensive at the Kitsap dump, I've done it on my own in the past). And then sales tax for his services a couple hundred. Overall, it was about 4k, which was 1k over budget but seeing as $750 was dump run costs and like $350 was sales tax, it totally met my expectations. Sergio and his crew are polite, fast, friendly, and hard working. I'm pleased that we selected Sergio for our yard work. They did a significant amount of yard waste hacking and removal. My grandmother-in-law is very attached to some of the plants so they were very careful about preserving and protecting specific plants (whichever plants so wanted stayed, and the overgrown invasive plants growing on top of them were removed) and Sergio and his crew were clearly professionals at handling these Pacific Northwestern flora. If you're looking for someone who will work hard for you and be very fair, I would recommend emailing, calling, or texting Sergio to bring him out for a quote. Other projects we are about to have done that Sergio may be involved with and stated he and his crew can do, and will quote separately: -power washing and painting her house -grading, levelling, and filling her drive way with rock -aerating and seeding grass and laying sod -placing pavers to create unprecedented walkways -removal of old fences and installation of new fences So in addition to yard and junk waste removal, as well as professionally manicuring her plants, shrubs, and trees, Sergio and his team can do pretty much anything. Contact him for a quote. I highly recommend. :)

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
