I prefer to do everything myself, but is there anything worse than moving? I don't have many friends who work for beer these days, so I broke down and decided to pay some movers this time around. They arrived on time and worked quickly. The moving process is much easier when you pay for help. Hopefully, I will not be moving again soon, but if I do, I'll give them repeat business.

This was an ideal moving experience for us! We had Sheldon and Ian as our moving guys; they had such a great attitude throughout the entire process and their approach to customer service is why I would use this company again. On the day of the move, the movers contacted us via phone to let us know they were leaving the warehouse. They showed up on time and made sure that they did not block any of our neighbors' driveways or the street (Ballard=No Parking). Ian, the lead, provided me with an outline of what they would be doing for us and provided the details of their start time, etc. This was very clear so there would be no confusion of what we would be charged for and I really appreciate having this information. Once everything was signed, they started moving stuff and packing the truck and they were super-fast and efficient, all while being able to have a good rapport with myself, my husband, and each other. They could empty out our second floor 1 bed/1bath condo in about 2 hours and move all our things into the new place (1 level) in less than 1 hour. They were very careful with moving the furniture in and out of both places, made sure to put each item in the correctly labeled room or ask for direction, and there was no damage to our things or either location. Once everything was completed, they again outline the end time and explained the final costs. I would use this company again because of the crews' great attitude and because they were detailed oriented with the actual move and letting us know what to expect. Alex and his partner showed up on time, prepared, and ready to start loading our household items. They had a top notch truck and equipment with plenty of protective gear to insure our things were not damaged. They didn’t scratch or nick anything at either location as well as any of our things. They were very nice and had a great positive attitude. They were very fast and efficient. The price was shockingly affordable. I highly recommend these guys for any move, across town or cross country.

I've hired Cross Country Movers for two moves now in WA , and both times it has been a great experience (as much as a move can be). The guys are hard working and efficient and you can't beat the price to value. You can feel confident that you are in good hands.

Great American Moving Systems handled our move with great precision at a very reasonable cost. My primary reason for hiring them was their quote. I’m happy to report that they didn’t cross that estimate in the final bill. I have heard stories about inefficient movers but the movers were nothing like them. They were prompt, skilled and always ready to help. They really outperformed my expectations. They were done with all the packing and loading in just 3 hours. The quality of their work is top notch. The delivery was made on time with all my belongings unharmed. I just don’t have words to say how grateful I am to these men.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
