Holly K. says, "Roberto was quick to respond and very easy to communicate with. He came out the same day as submitting the quote which was super reasonable! He was very polite and handed me his business card before coming in as a nice gesture to set me at ease. He even took off his shoes before coming in which was great because I can’t even get my boyfriend to do that! Roberto got to work and quickly found the problem while explaining what he was doing. He was in and out in no time at all and our drain is finally doing its job again. Since Roberto also does electrical, I don’t need to look any further to find a bonafide handyman here in Seattle! Bonus: he even cleaned out our tub before he left! It’s the small things that show you who the true professionals are."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Do electricians offer remote or virtual services?

While electrical work is typically performed in person, you may come across some electrician profiles that state the pro is offering remote services. If you do, contact local electricians to discuss your particular project and what type of remote services they may offer.

Electrician was thorough and enjoyable. He took the time to figure out the problem and fix it. So glad I called as it was a safety issue that could have been bad.

Daniel did a great job installing 2 chandeliers, a bunch of recessed lights, changed all electric switches, and patched up the ceiling. It was all done in 2 days and look great. I can't even tell were the patch work is. I will be working with Daniel on future outdoor lighting project and would recommend him to all that ask me about a good electrician.

I had Drew install two separate single pole 30 amp breakers along with an install of a Tesla wall charger and it’s required 50 amp circuit. Drew was able to complete the installation in only a couple hours and was able to beat other electricians by only charging a quarter of the cost that had been quoted to me by other contractors. The install was done to code with all of the particulars required for accommodating powering multiple server cabinets in a garage. I’ll be coming back to Drew for any other electrical work.

My husband and I just bought a new house. We knew there were a lot of electrical issues and we're worried about finding a good electrician and price. I found Chris on Thumbtack and he responded to my request same day. We quoted me 450 to 500 and arrived promptly on agreed time. He completed the wiring of the garage, fixed the code issues on the breaker box from the previous owners, installed a 220 volt outlet for our electric cars, and fixed lights and switches throughout the house. He even offered to bring over coffee in the morning. To top it off the whole job ended up costing 100 less than originally thought. I will request his services when needed in the future and recommend him to others. Thank you for the great work.
