Our landscape/yard needed pruning and cleanup. Mr. Herrera called and we arranged a time... he arrived as scheduled... did all work as requested. Our cost was reasonable as expected. All in all a job well done!

Carlos and team did a good job cutting our trees and charged a fair price. He answered emails promptly and stopped by to provide a quote. They showed up mid-morning instead of after 4:30 as agreed, luckily my husband was home unexpectedly. Would hire again for future landscaping needs.

The Apple Landscaping Crew showed up on-time, did a great job with my jungle of a yard, and even blew off the driveway and deck without having to ask. I am genuinely impressed with both their skills and work quality. Couldn't be happier with their work!!!

Pedro came today to do my landscaping project . He did a great job . He followed and made recommendations of what I wanted . My front and back yard look so nice now . As most people's yard the winter months take a toll on yard. I don't own any yard equipment so happy I found family landscaping . I have hired him to come back in a few weeks to do yard lawn mowing . Pedro was very reasonably priced . Did an excellent job .

I was very fortunate to work with G&E Landscape Contractor. I was impressed with Polo's excellent customer service. He was quick to respond any questions or doubts I had & would give suggestions of things that would work better. Along with his suggestions he would give reasons why it would be a better idea. He never tried to upsale. On contrary, he would help find better deals. Polo & his team did a wonderful job in an efficient timely manner. They surpassed my expectaions. I can't recommend G&E enough.

Julio and his crew have been hard at work for me for at least the past 5 yrs. His work ethics, communication skills, knowledge base and skills are outstanding. He always finds time to fit me into his very busy schedule. I have watched him transform his business from a start up landscape company to a very experienced and solid business worthy of top marks. I highly recommend him and his crew to many people in my community.

R&R (and the owner Ricardo) was the main contractor that implemented my landscape plan (had a landscape architect draw this up separately). He came in with a fair bid and executed the following: 1.) Build of a block retaining wall with capstones 2.) Complete replacement of soil and mulch for the yard 3.) Planting of various species of trees and plants for the yard according to the landscape plan 4.) Installation of pavers and gravel where needed My property was not in an easily location (elevated) - so the work was back-breaking to haul up and down the stairs. His people did this without complaint and R&R was done 4 days before the final date promised on the landscaping. In addition to the landscaping, Ricardo (owner of R&R) is extremely knowledgeable about construction so is able to help you plan around future projects that you may want to put in place (e.g., pergolas). I wish I had known him before I bought my current fence as well. I would recommend R&R without hesitation.

I'm a real estate broker who was getting bids for my seller to get his yard cleaned up and his property on the market. The yard is large and completely overgrown. I got a total of 5 bids for my seller to pick from and met with all the landscapers personally. Alex had a very reasonable bid and started immediately. He powered through to get the property cleaned up and show ready. I'll definitely recommend him to my other clients.

Alec and his team are absolutely top notch. In this day and age, communication is key, and Alec was on top of things from the get go. He was communicative, clear on the scope of the project, and put in quality work to not only get the job done, but went above and beyond with following up to ensure success. He wants us to continue to follow up with him as time passes to keep him posted on the status of our (very old) transplant. That means a lot to us, as his investment in his work really provides a lot of value. We’ll definitely be calling Alec for al our landscape and arborist needs in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
