As the creator of the children's picture book, Santa's Magic Ring, I found Joe to be excellent to work with and will seek him out should I need an illustrator. Not only did he listen and understand my demands, his creativity was beyond reproach. I highly recommend Huffy Creative. 5 stars... Jared McVay, author.

Good for adult piano beginners, a bit intense and demanding but I don’t mind the extra motivation. Chris says that students rise to expectations, and I've found this to be true after slogging through a book in a week my old teacher would take three months to cover.

Kristine rewrote my entire web page all 11 pages of them for Big Johns Oil and Lube Auto Repair she also took the time to show how weak the SOC'S where written and explained in detail how they work and why they work , it was like having my English teacher in grade school standing write beside me . I felt confident that Kristine was going to have my web page working for me rather then against me , Kristine's understanding and knowledge of the how and the why everything has to work together (key words) made a big difference in driving business our way. Kristine was knowledgeable and patient and under stood our frustration , The other writers we had talked with seemed uninterested in educating us or did not seem to have the passion or concern to get to know us on a personal level . I truly appreciate the dedication and drive that Kristine had in straightening things out for us ,She went above and beyond in many ways . I would definatley use Kristine again to write my web page now and in the future you will find none more efficent or as detailed as Kristine I would highly recommend Kristine for all of your writing needs wether it is SOC'S or writing a book she can make it happen in a blink of an eye . Thanks Kristine . John Wilson Owner Big Johns Oil and Lube / Auto repair

Colleen is really special. I’ve been working with her for the past few months on a diverse range of creative, academic, and emotional goals: she is helping me develop my Master’s Thesis at Columbia University, publish my first zine of comics, and proactively plan and prioritize my life from a place of independence and strength. Colleen’s specific toolset and background are perfectly suited to provide practical support as well as creative inspiration in each of these areas. As a creative herself, she has pointed me towards references and directions that are spot-on and invigorating, while at the same time offering a larger structure and organization for my work that allows me to actually get things done. One of the most concrete benefits I’ve experienced from working with Colleen is a huge improvement in my productivity and mood during the work day. Colleen crafts personalized schedules for my day based on neuroscience, and as a result I have literally doubled my essay-writing speed. Colleen is incredibly talented on an emotional level as well: she creates a safe space and time that is just for me, and I can tell that she is really listening and actively thinking about my goals because of her invariably insightful responses. It’s been wonderful having such a supportive partner in my life, and best of all, it is so fulfilling to actually accomplish goals that I’ve dreamt about for a long time. Colleen is magic – her coaching is the best thing to enter my life in a long time and she has my highest, most enthusiastic recommendation.

I have worked with Dale for 25 years. He is incredibly talented. Dale has done a range of work for me from developing a complete marketing design package, which included logo and website design to signage for sales office and fliers, as well as personal artistic projects. Every family milestone is marked by Dale's ingenuity. From doing decade by decade posters for an 80th bday that included events and inventions of the decade to humorous posters for husband's birthday (including frazzled golf poster, to baby books for daughter's baby shower hand bound to wedding collages, Dale is your guy.

For two years Deb facilitated a weekly Writer’s Circle (now known as Tuesdays With Deborah - please Google it). Thanks to her gentle and encouraging persistence I went from non-blogger to blogger. We got to know each other and I shared my second book with her (Résumés That Resume Careers) and we decided to co-author a much-expanded second edition (Burn Your Résumé! You Need a Professional Profile. http://amzn.to/GDwKYo). What Deb brought to the second edition is significant: a. the subtitle and expanded focus of this edition (Winning the Inner and Outer Game of Finding Work or New Business), b. the elements of how to play an effective Inner Game, c. an additional focus on Solopreneurs, d. editing and layout of the book’s interior using EndDesign, e. sourcing and managing graphic artist for cover design, f. coordination with the printer, and g. website maintenance and update, and h. marketing and related workshops, which we are doing together. Thanks to Deb a number of authors now have books in print, and in the near future she and I will add a Kindle version of Burn Your Resume! to our offerings, and others will follow. She has my total, 100% endorsement.

Haley made the cover for my book, The Nihility. I accredit her amazing artwork for most of my sales. She took the notes that I sent her and made a breathtaking piece of art that embodies my story perfectly. I will be using her again for the covers to book 2 and 3 of my series!

Judith was both editor and publisher of my book in 2012. Her technical skills for the page were exceptional. She has a fine eye for detail and for artistic look. Her keen sense of story made the book better on every level. The prospect of getting a book to print and to e-reader readiness was daunting for this author. Judith handled it all professionally and with good humor. Tasks were accomplished on time. The finished product has garnered many compliments. I'm very happy to be working with her on a second book.

    About

We created our company to work one-on-one with authors to make excellent books with an eye on contemporary (and future) publishing and distribution practices. We are long-time publishing professionals who run independent presses, making books with national distribution. Our decision to launch The Publishing World grew from a belief that we can work with authors in the same fashion as a conventional publishing house (editing, design, sales & marketing, publicity, etc.), demonstrate our value to authors (without hidden costs and fees that occur with conventional publishing), and ensure that authors retain 100% of their rights and royalties. INDEPENDENT PUBLISHING We can help you publish independently, no matter what stage you’re at with your book. We can assist with the larger, structural editing right down to the copy edits. We can find you the right designer (print and ebook) and printer, and negotiate on your behalf. We also help arrange distribution, author websites, social media, reviews, publicity, and events. When you hear of the giant success stories of the rare independent writer whose book blows up, it’s because they hired people to compete with the big traditional publishers. TRADITIONAL PUBLISHING DEAL If you want to pursue a traditional publishing deal, we can help you write the best possible version of your book to convince an agent and/or publisher to jump on your book. We know a lot of people in the industry, and we can help you with your pitch and...managing the book deal. Writing a book is some of the most difficult - and rewarding - work a person can accomplish in a life-time. It's amazing to help people complete such a project and share it with the world.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

    • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
    • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
    • Expertise in your target area.
    • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

    • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
    • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
