As the creator of the children's picture book, Santa's Magic Ring, I found Joe to be excellent to work with and will seek him out should I need an illustrator. Not only did he listen and understand my demands, his creativity was beyond reproach. I highly recommend Huffy Creative. 5 stars... Jared McVay, author.

Colleen is really special. I’ve been working with her for the past few months on a diverse range of creative, academic, and emotional goals: she is helping me develop my Master’s Thesis at Columbia University, publish my first zine of comics, and proactively plan and prioritize my life from a place of independence and strength. Colleen’s specific toolset and background are perfectly suited to provide practical support as well as creative inspiration in each of these areas. As a creative herself, she has pointed me towards references and directions that are spot-on and invigorating, while at the same time offering a larger structure and organization for my work that allows me to actually get things done. One of the most concrete benefits I’ve experienced from working with Colleen is a huge improvement in my productivity and mood during the work day. Colleen crafts personalized schedules for my day based on neuroscience, and as a result I have literally doubled my essay-writing speed. Colleen is incredibly talented on an emotional level as well: she creates a safe space and time that is just for me, and I can tell that she is really listening and actively thinking about my goals because of her invariably insightful responses. It’s been wonderful having such a supportive partner in my life, and best of all, it is so fulfilling to actually accomplish goals that I’ve dreamt about for a long time. Colleen is magic – her coaching is the best thing to enter my life in a long time and she has my highest, most enthusiastic recommendation.

I am more than happy to write this testimonial in relation to the website design and development company Swift Whale Creative and its Studio Director, Anne Weeks. I am happy to do so for two reasons; firstly: I now have a website which makes my writing stand out in the crowd of cyberspace sites. I am a writer and author, poet and publisher, researcher and scholar in the evening of my life. My website is the venue for marketing my work and in the three months my site has been on the world-wide-web(21/3/'11 to 21/6/'11) it has shone brightly in the pantheon of my competitors. I don't expect to be famous or rich, but I want to and expect to be read and this expectation has been more than satisfied in just these three months of the presence of my site on the net. Secondly, I was involved in negotiating the style and content, the strategy and the many fine details of what is and was my complex and extensive site with Anne Weeks, the Studio Director, from the preliminary phase of my site's construction in September 2010 until after my site went live in March 2011. My site has some 72 categories and sub-categories of my writing and content and several million words. It's a relatively big slice of cyberspace given the infinity of space in that parallel universe. Anne possessed many qualities that made this 8 month process of getting my site on the interent the relatively easy road that it was. I write and have written 1000s of emails in the last ten years of my life on the internet and I know how easy it is to say the wrong thing and upset the sensitivities of my readers, friends and associations, without even trying--indeed, in the process trying to put one's best foot foreward, so to speak. Anne was consistently: patient, diplomatic, understanding of my needs and desires, prompt to reply to my myriad requests for information and ideas, a provider of explanations which were simple to follow, a skilled co-ordinator and facilitator between myself and Daniel Sullivan and the rest of the Swift Whale Creative team. I have no trouble in recommending Anne and Swift Whale Creative to others who want to design and build a framework for their websites using the user friendly CMS system. Indeed, I would be more than happy to provide even more of a testimonial over the phone(03-63824790), by email(ronprice@gmail.com), or snailmail(6 Reece Street, George Town, Tasmania, Australia, 7253) since my writing is out there in the world getting 1000s, indeed, hundreds of thousands of readers thanks to the work of Swift Whale Creative and the team, Anne Weeks, Daniel Sullivan and, of course, myself---since I have become even more of an internet entrepreneur as well. Yours sincerely Ron Price George Town Tasmania

For two years Deb facilitated a weekly Writer’s Circle (now known as Tuesdays With Deborah - please Google it). Thanks to her gentle and encouraging persistence I went from non-blogger to blogger. We got to know each other and I shared my second book with her (Résumés That Resume Careers) and we decided to co-author a much-expanded second edition (Burn Your Résumé! You Need a Professional Profile. http://amzn.to/GDwKYo). What Deb brought to the second edition is significant: a. the subtitle and expanded focus of this edition (Winning the Inner and Outer Game of Finding Work or New Business), b. the elements of how to play an effective Inner Game, c. an additional focus on Solopreneurs, d. editing and layout of the book’s interior using EndDesign, e. sourcing and managing graphic artist for cover design, f. coordination with the printer, and g. website maintenance and update, and h. marketing and related workshops, which we are doing together. Thanks to Deb a number of authors now have books in print, and in the near future she and I will add a Kindle version of Burn Your Resume! to our offerings, and others will follow. She has my total, 100% endorsement.

“I love being a creative, but I’m horrible at self-promotion. Michelle is a natural at bringing out the best in others and helping them stand out from the crowd. She has been my chief editor and general promotions manager for almost 5 years now and I don’t know what I’d do without her. She initially presented me with a promotional plan, calendar, and a strict to-do list and because I listened to her advice, I can say that the sales for my music and book have increased by at least 30%! I only know this because she presents me with stat reports on a regular basis – all I know is that I have been busier than ever with one speaking or singing engagement after another. My motivational speaking career is also finally taking off and I have been invited to speak at charity events all over California. My story is getting out there and I couldn’t be happier. She asks me often, “How are you doing? Can you handle more?” To which I say, “Yes, bring it on!” Here’s one example, while planning a personal vacation in Italy this last summer, I knew about a music festival and told Michelle about it. One call from her and I was booked to perform live on the stage in Italy! I’m sure there were more negotiations behind it than that, but all I had to do was show up. My advice? Be good at what you do and let Michelle be good at what she does, helping you shine.”

I retained Ms. Daniel to edit my manuscript for publishing. This was a manuscript of poetry and abstracts that would require an editor a great deal of patience. While I didn't have a deadline to complete this editing task, it would require her professionalism and constructive thinking. She tackled the issues with a very positive and forward thinking approach. She expanded the readership for the manuscript dramatically and addressed each poem and abstract in such a way that I was awed by her creativeness. We maintained excellent communication throughout the entire process, even though we were 1500 miles apart. My manuscript is now ready for publication and the publisher is very impressed with the high quality of the manuscript which I credit Ms. Daniel.

Judith was both editor and publisher of my book in 2012. Her technical skills for the page were exceptional. She has a fine eye for detail and for artistic look. Her keen sense of story made the book better on every level. The prospect of getting a book to print and to e-reader readiness was daunting for this author. Judith handled it all professionally and with good humor. Tasks were accomplished on time. The finished product has garnered many compliments. I'm very happy to be working with her on a second book.

    About

We created our company to work one-on-one with authors to make excellent books with an eye on contemporary (and future) publishing and distribution practices. We are long-time publishing professionals who run independent presses, making books with national distribution. Our decision to launch The Publishing World grew from a belief that we can work with authors in the same fashion as a conventional publishing house (editing, design, sales & marketing, publicity, etc.), demonstrate our value to authors (without hidden costs and fees that occur with conventional publishing), and ensure that authors retain 100% of their rights and royalties. INDEPENDENT PUBLISHING We can help you publish independently, no matter what stage you’re at with your book. We can assist with the larger, structural editing right down to the copy edits. We can find you the right designer (print and ebook) and printer, and negotiate on your behalf. We also help arrange distribution, author websites, social media, reviews, publicity, and events. When you hear of the giant success stories of the rare independent writer whose book blows up, it’s because they hired people to compete with the big traditional publishers. TRADITIONAL PUBLISHING DEAL If you want to pursue a traditional publishing deal, we can help you write the best possible version of your book to convince an agent and/or publisher to jump on your book. We know a lot of people in the industry, and we can help you with your pitch and...managing the book deal.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

    • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
    • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
    • Expertise in your target area.
    • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

    • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
    • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
