Introduction: I have been teaching piano and keyboard lessons for almost three decades, I believe I am very patient and detail-oriented when it comes to teaching! I offer lessons in English, Polish, and Czech. Although most students meet only with me once a week, each next lesson builds on the previous one. I believe that practice and assigned weekly theory assignments are integral components in mastering piano. My students are also offered opportunities for recitals and piano exams to practice their performance skills. I love to learn - whether it is new techniques to teaching, learning and mastering new piano pieces, or even learning about my students! My favorite part of teaching is meeting students of a range of ages, learning abilities, as well as cultures. My youngest students are less than 4 years old and my oldest are seniors. The ability levels range from having no experience and students that even have a decade of experience! I believe that is never too early or too late to begin music lessons.

Janina is an excellent piano instructor and a very kind person. My older son learned from her for 10 years before he moved on to college and the younger son has been taking lessons for the past 5 years. She has also taught our friend's children of various age group and she is very patient with them and encourages them to do their best. I have never seen her get angry or raise her voice at the children. She also guides and nurtures them to be confident and invites them to participate it recitals twice a year in front of family and friends. I have observed that the children are happy to participate in the recitals and do not feel overwhelmed or shy. The children march confidently to the piano and play their piece! As the students advance through their learning, she encourages them to appear for National Piano Playing Auditions. She takes care to prepare them by working on their piano skills and gives them the confidence to perform in the auditions. Janina is very mindful of the skill levels of the children and would choose appropriate piano pieces for them. She is very flexible in her approach in the sense, if a child has inclination for contemporary music, she encourages them to explore. My wife and I would recommend Janina wholeheartedly as a piano instructor for your children.

Janina Beran is very experienced working with the younger kids. Both of my boys started taking piano lessons when they were about 4 and half years old. Janina is patient with them, always making sure my kids understand the piece that they are working on. Through Janina's encouragments, my older son, now 7 years old, plays in recitals twice a year and takes the annual piano guild exams. In addition, he performs in school talent show every year. I see a positive transformation from a shy boy to a confident on stage performer. My younger son has been taking lessons for 5 months now. He keeps talking about how he wants to play as good as his older brother and performs on stage in school one day. All thanks to Janina for believing in my kids and with all of her positive reinforcements she has been giving them. I am so grateful that I have found a wonderful piano teacher!

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I offer a free trial lesson for new students to see if they truly would enjoy pursuing lessons with me. During the first lesson, I go over my syllabus, contract, and the structure of my lessons - I specifically favor the Faber and Faber teaching method, which involves the duo's books. However, the lessons are what you choose to make of them! If you have an interest of musical pieces to learn, I am all ears. If all sounds enticing, we will begin weekly or biweekly lessons to your desire!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Along with a degree from the University of Wroclaw in Poland, I attended the University of Washington School of Music to pursue a Post Baccalaureate Certification in Music Education.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
Music is like another language. I started teaching piano lessons as a hobby in Poland and Austria, but grew to love the field, to where I wanted to transform my hobby into a career. Currently I have been teaching for about 26 years.
