I called Mike because our house only had one gutter above the porch. He came out within a couple of days and gave me a bid for not only the entire house but the garage as well. We booked him within a couple of days and had our brand new gutters hung within a week. Mike was fast and friendly. He walked me through the process and made suggestions when needed. He performed the work quickly and our new gutters are kickin like a chicken!

Gordy did an excellent job on my front porch deck. I would not hesitate to hire him again. And it could be a coincidence but the couple who came by to see the house the day he was finishing bought my house after 3 months on the market. Good job Gordy.

I wasn't home but everything looked good. I just wish they took the gutter clean out with them or put them the trash rather than leave a bag by front porch. Not a big deal though.

Very pleased with Steve's ability to rebuild and restore the front porch of our home built in the 1920s. He used quality materials and craftsmanship to recreate the look that we wanted on the front of our house. We would definitely hire Steve again.

Robert Selander was an absolute pro. The rebuild of our back porch, a covered deck on a garage and downstairs entry turned out beautiful! He is on top of his communication, expectation, design and budget. If we need construction in the future he will be our guy to contact. I would refer him wholeheartedly.

We had Erik rebuild our deck and front porch. After having issues with previous contractors, Erik and his crew were a breath of fresh air. We enjoyed working with everyone, Paco and Mike were always on time and a pleasure to be around. Erik was always on site to ensure things were running smoothly. We appreciate the quick communication and timely manner in which everything was done. Overall, it was a wonderful experience and we would recommend Gafco to everyone!

Jim restored a converted mudroom into the original style craftsman porch. He was very knowledgeable and we liked the quality of work. He stuck to the original fixed bid amount, even when parts of it seemed to be more complicated than originally intended.

The stairs leading to our second story porch were swaying when we walked on them and needed other repairs, so we hired Kenny to do the work. He gave a very reasonable bid and started the work right away. He fixed our stairs and added supports, so now they are very sturdy and safe! He also fixed the rain gutter on our front porch, so water will travel down the pipe and not over the side of the house! We are very happy with his work, professionalism and attention to detail.

JW builders did a great job with my backyard porch. Removed the old rotted wood and left the cross beams (not rotted) still intact. Josh also added on to my deck for a hot tub

We are very happy with the work Mr. Smith did on our house. We hired him for two projects: a closed in porch and a walk-in stone tile shower. Both projects were completed on time and with good results. The shower is very beautiful. Family and friends that come to visit say its gorgeous and they love taking a shower in it. Mr. Smith does excellent work and is a very friendly and professional contractor. We would definitely recommend him. Charity

We needed a railing put in our front walkway leading to our porch. Zack did a great job installing this railing. Not only is it rock solid, but Zack did a nice job integrating the railing to the existing front porch railing so that it tied in very nicely visually. He is professional, seems knowledgeable about building code, and was efficient. His bid was reasonable. I would not hesitate to call him back to do some more projects for us.

John was an absolute pleasure to work with. While it took some time to wait for him to get to my project, it was worth the wait! I explained the ideas I had for remodeling my front porch, siding and gable. John and his assistant, Mike, went above and beyond my expectations to turn my dreams into reality. They took a keen interest in guiding me to understand what my ideas would look like and suggesting better alternatives on many occasions. They worked my remodel as they would have on their own homes. The one thing John could have done better was provide me with quotes that included taxes. This caused a wrinkle at the end of the project. Despite this, I would highly recommend him.

We contracted with Devon to prepare our house to be listed for sale in an aggressive time line, and he did an outstanding job. We could not be happier with the results. He listened to what we wanted, offered advice on how to save time and costs without sacrificing quality, and did whatever it took to get the job done on time. With the help of one or two other guys, Devon was able to remodel two bathrooms, retile the entryway, rebuild part of our porch, install carpet, paint many rooms and the garage, and many many other little things. The amount he accomplished in a short time frame is simply amazing. My only regret is that we didn't find Devon four years ago when we started this remodel project! Devon has my complete confidence and I recommend him to anybody looking for a quality handyman who can tackle just about any project.

Chris was great. Came out fast for the estimate and got to our project the next week. He was very nice to work with and I feel he did a great job on our porch cover. I would recommend him and would use him again for another project.

Bryan built our chain link fence a couple years ago, turned out beautiful...just what we wanted. He also built from his own plan a awesome chicken coop for me. The "girls" love it! He later did a porch roof and some indoor remodeling for us and our neighbors, some wrought iron. He was always on time and professional, finishing in a timely manner. I'll be hiring him again when I find more that needs doing!

Doug has done 2 jobs for us. Last year he built a beautiful, craftsman style front porch roof for us. It is exactly what I described. About 2 weeks ago he painted our interior, did a great professional job. Honest, neat & a hard worker.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
