Colleen is really special. I’ve been working with her for the past few months on a diverse range of creative, academic, and emotional goals: she is helping me develop my Master’s Thesis at Columbia University, publish my first zine of comics, and proactively plan and prioritize my life from a place of independence and strength. Colleen’s specific toolset and background are perfectly suited to provide practical support as well as creative inspiration in each of these areas. As a creative herself, she has pointed me towards references and directions that are spot-on and invigorating, while at the same time offering a larger structure and organization for my work that allows me to actually get things done. One of the most concrete benefits I’ve experienced from working with Colleen is a huge improvement in my productivity and mood during the work day. Colleen crafts personalized schedules for my day based on neuroscience, and as a result I have literally doubled my essay-writing speed. Colleen is incredibly talented on an emotional level as well: she creates a safe space and time that is just for me, and I can tell that she is really listening and actively thinking about my goals because of her invariably insightful responses. It’s been wonderful having such a supportive partner in my life, and best of all, it is so fulfilling to actually accomplish goals that I’ve dreamt about for a long time. Colleen is magic – her coaching is the best thing to enter my life in a long time and she has my highest, most enthusiastic recommendation.

Grant tutored both my sons from Elementary school and beyond. My children caught up quickly in the areas they were deficient and are both currently in AP high school level classes. Grant is a creative teacher and always has a variety of materials to suit each child's needs. My younger son particularly liked the brain teasers and puzzle worksheets. On top of education, Grant worked on binder organization and general preparation. I highly recommend him.

Karen and I met online through a neighborhood Facebook group, and when she offered a mini session/shoot, I jumped at the chance, because I've been wanting some nice portraits of me and my boyfriend. Not really engagement portraits, since we're not quite ready to get married, but just some beautiful portraits to frame and hang in our home. Before the shoot, I gave Karen a description of where I wanted to do the shoot, and what I envisioned. Karen was totally receptive and excited about my ideas, and let me know that she also had her own style. I was totally excited and said that with a couple of my ideas and her artistic talent, I thought we could get some beautiful photos. I wanted to go to the Volunteer Park Conservatory, and we agreed to meet there on a Sunday morning to make the most of the natural light. When the day of the shoot arrived, Karen was really prompt and even sent me a reminder before the shoot, which is always appreciated. As we got started, she was friendly and easy to talk to, and my boyfriend Aaron and I were instantly at ease and excited to do the shoot. The session went really smoothly, and Karen was great at talking us through her ideas, the poses, and also letting us be ourselves and be natural. She definitely knew what she was doing, and even though I usually hate being photographed (I tend to self-conscious and self-deprecating), she really put me at ease and made the whole experience fun and enjoyable. Since it was a mini session/shoot, the turnaround for the finished photos was super quick, so I was able to post them on Facebook and show them off to all my friends and family really soon. Everyone loved them, but most importantly, my boyfriend and I love them, and we will treasure those photos for many years to come. I would highly recommend Karen as a photographer. She's talented, friendly, professional, and her photos are GORGEOUS. :)

I asked Duane to provide creative copy for articles and brochures. His copy was thoughtfully constructed and strategically driven. He patiently listened to the scope of the project and made great suggestions that improved the text in order to meet the desired goals for the targeted audience. I would highly recommend Duane Kelly and will use him again for future projects.

Great writer. Quick delivery. I got more than I asked for, and would use him again. This was a unique project, but his theatrical and film background came in very handy to me.

Best bet in town. I usually do not take time to make reviews but Iris Creative was amazing. They were prepared, knew what to do and were very prodessional. I was very happy with the qaulity of work produced and what the prices included (much more than other photographers in the area). I reccomend their services to anyone wanting a portrait session or event.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
