Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to fix a fence?

The average cost of fence repairs is around $250, with most homeowners paying anywhere between $200 and $300. Fence repairs have a wide range of potential costs, however, ranging from $50 to as much as $1,443. The cost of your fence repair project depends on multiple factors, including where you live, what type of repair you need, the terrain and the fence materials used.

Contact several fence repair professionals near you to get an accurate cost estimate for your fence.

Why does my gate sag?

A gate can sag for a number of reasons. One common reason is that the screws holding the hinges in the wood or other post material have come loose, causing gravity to pull the fence down. Another common problem is the gate post’s lack of stability. Posts can become loose and start to lean, or if they are wooden, they can even rot at the point where they meet the ground.

How much does it cost to fix a gate?

Gates can be more expensive to fix than other parts of a fence, and there are several reasons for this. The first is that gates are the only moving parts on a fence — hence they have more components that can wear out, as well as friction and the potential for rusting and sagging. Fixing a gate may require a total replacement or simply replacing certain components like hinges. Sometimes, the repair may involve fixing the surrounding fence.

Contact several gate repair professionals near you to get an accurate cost estimate for your gate.

What are some common fence repairs?

The most common fence repairs are aimed at fixing:

  • Missing boards or slats. This is a common problem with wood fences.
  • Fence material corrosion. This occurs on metal fences like chain link and iron.
  • A sagging gate. This could result from a tilting fence post or loose hinges.
  • Post movement. Typically, this is caused by frost, corrosion or water.
  • Stains. Moisture and other elements can stain fencing, which may require a professional to remove it.
  • Warping. Warped, curled, cupped or bent boards are unsightly and less effective and need to be replaced.

If you notice any of the above issues with your fence, reach out to fence repair professionals near you to start getting cost estimates and schedule an appointment.

Should I repair or replace my fence?

Fence repair is better for common problems that only affect small areas, such as a broken picket or a shifting fence post. However, there is a rule of thumb to follow: If the repair project requires replacing 20% or more of your fence, it’s probably time to replace the whole fence. The exception to this rule is if the fence is fairly new and just part of it is damaged.

Who installs fences?

Fencing contractors are the best choice when you want to have a fence installed on your property. While there are several types of professionals who can likely handle this service — including handymen, landscapers and general contractors — a fencing contractor has the experience to know what could cause potential problems in the long run. This might include wet spots, vegetation or other issues with the land.

When choosing a professional to install a fence on your property, make sure they have credentials and experience.

What are some common gate repairs?

The most common gate repairs tend to be associated with a sagging gate. A gate repair professional will check the hinge system. If the hinges have come loose, they will detach the gate, set the hinges in the proper location and reattach everything.

Another common repair is replacing or repairing a sagging fence post by digging a new posthole and/or using a concrete footing.

What's the cheapest fence to install?

The cheapest type of fence to install is (usually) a chain-link fence. Averaging between $7 and $12 per linear foot, this type of fencing is strong and secure and allows homeowners to maintain visibility while adding protection to their property. Chain-link fences are constructed from steel coated in aluminum, vinyl or zinc for weather resistance.

You can get a more accurate cost estimate for your chain-link fence by contacting professionals who specialize in installing these fences.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

Reviews for Kent fence professionals

HighLand Fence did an amazing job replacing my back fence & two side section of my fence in between my yard & my neighbors. I requested 3 companies to come out & HighLand Fence responded within a timely manner regarding my additional questions. They were upfront about what they can & cannot do and did not pressure me to make a decision & allowed me to think about my options. They completed my fence replacement in 2 days. The 2 men team working on my fence were friendly, helpful to answer my questions & professional. They cleaned up everything when they were done. This was my first time hiring help to replace my fence & I’m thankful I made the right choice hiring HighLand Fence.

You know that sound if you live in the Seattle area...it sounds like a freight train running full speed outside and it doesn't stop for hours! Wind speeds in excess of 50 MPH overnight snapped the 4x4's to the gate and the adjoining fence panel on the west side of our home, snapped another 4x4 in the back fence and blew over a 30+ foot juniper tree in the front yard. Shiny was one of only three contractor teams to respond within two days of my inquiry. While his bid was not the least expensive overall, the work of his team and overall value was excellent. Shiny was very flexible to our requests and offered ways to ensure that the performance of the fence and gate replacement would outperform the original. I also had the team replace additional fencing (70 feet total). They did an outstanding job replacing the fence, gate, the individual post in the back fence and removed the tall tree (and stump!) that had blown down in the front yard. To the best of my observation, all work was done without damage to our in-ground irrigation system and landscaping. All old fence materials and the fallen tree were hauled per their bid. Day One: Removed all old fencing, posts and concrete. Set concrete on all new posts. Day Two: Built fence and created gate segment. Day Three: Completed gate and removed fallen tree.

Needed part of fence that was detached & other rotting boards to be replaced but mostly the detached part. Edgar did a great job! I was even happy to see him arriving with a mask & social distancing. He used quality cedar boards as well. Price was fair, too. I would call him again in the future & refer him to family or friends in need of a fence repair or a new fence! Attached is before & after pics of the detached part ( kinda hard to see with tree branches).

I worked with Jimmy to get an old fence removed and a new fence installed. He was extremely responsive, came and gave me a quote the same day and really explained the process and the cedar product he uses. His team was very professional and they did such a great job installing the new fence, it looks so nice. His price was very competitive and they got it done in 2 days and were able to fit me in quickly. I would highly recommend Jimmy.

They did a beautiful job. I have a corner lot where portions of the fencing were replaced by the previous owners at different times. They seamlessly integrated the new fencing into the style of the old. They were courteous, punctual and cost efficient. I am already using them for other jobs around my house. I highly recommend!

Jose presented me the best game plan for replacing a 120 ft. fence behind one of the buildings at our townhome complex. His quote was the best for what we were getting; a very high quality fence that should last 30+ years. His crew did excellent work; started and finished the project on time. They were a pleasure to work with. I will gladly hire Calel’s Landscaping again!

He had originally come over to do estimate of my two fence gates. He ended up fixing them right on the spot. Set a post in concrete, replaced broken chewed up pieces of wood. Made them open and close better than they have the whole time we owned the house. Very impressed, would definitely use when we are ready to replace the whole fence.

Christian and his team were great to work with. They built a new replacement fence between us and our neighbor on a sloping hill. They also repaired 2 sections of our back fence with a failing retaining wall that the neighbor didn’t want to tear out and fix. Christian was the only contractor out of 4 that we had look at it, that was willing to take on that difficult fix for us. Thank you. I would highly recommend Christian and his team.
