Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a fence professional during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The first step to setting up a consultation with a fence professional during the COVID-19 pandemic is sending the pro a message, which you can easily do online. Ask potential pros if you can set up a phone call or video chat to explain what fencing services you need. A video chat is useful because it allows the fence installer to guide you so they can get the necessary information. During the consultation, discuss virtual payments, the timeline of the project and any precautions you’ll both take to ensure safety.

How can I find out if a fence professional is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To figure out whether a fence professional can be considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, check the website of your city or state government. Another useful resource is CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19, which provides information in a nationwide context.

Within it are 16 different categories of infrastructure sectors that are considered essential. But keep in mind that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for fence and gate installation and repairs?

Currently, many fence and gate professional use common digital payment services like Venmo, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Zelle and more. Many more are quickly adopting the platforms as COVID-19 continues to force companies to digitally transform.

Contact the professional beforehand to discuss whether you can make digital payments, and take all measures to comply with social distancing recommendations. Compare fence professionals side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Does a fence professional need to enter my home?

Fencing jobs are done outdoors, so a fence professional or contractor will most likely not need to enter your home during the project. The exception to this may be any electrical work.

However, you may be able to work with fence professional to give them the information they need ahead of time through video chats, emails and photos sent digitally. Avoid all contact and practice social distancing guidelines set forth by the CDC and your local government. Discuss the best approach with local fence pros before they arrive at your home.

Do fence installers offer remote or virtual services?

Because fence installation needs to be done in person, fence professionals usually cannot offer remote services. If you come across profiles that state they offer remote services, message the fence installer to see what those services include.

For consultations and meetings, ask the fence professional if you can coordinate a virtual consultation in which you explain the project to them through video, photos and drawings transferred online. If not, it may be wise to postpone the project and book an appointment at a later date

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

Does adding a fence increase property value?

Fencing may increase the value of your property. However, this depends on what type of fence is installed and the purpose of the fence. For example, a fence may be worth more to a property that needs it to diminish noise coming from a highway. Fences may also be a plus to dog owners who require a backyard fence.

When deciding whether to install a fence in your yard, consult with your realtor or real estate expert. They can help you prioritize home improvement projects that will add value to your home.

Needed part of fence that was detached & other rotting boards to be replaced but mostly the detached part. Edgar did a great job! I was even happy to see him arriving with a mask & social distancing. He used quality cedar boards as well. Price was fair, too. I would call him again in the future & refer him to family or friends in need of a fence repair or a new fence! Attached is before & after pics of the detached part ( kinda hard to see with tree branches).

They tore down 12 panels of wood fence and replaced it with vinyl in just 2 days. During the initial consultation they even described in detail what extra steps they planned to take in the installation of the new posts to prevent the weakening rot from reoccurring. The new fence is beautiful, we are very pleased with their work. We especially appreciate the 6 year warranty on their construction. Considering the extra steps they took to make this fence so much more permanent than the last one, we don't anticipate needing to call in the warranty.

Nate was great. He worked with us and our insurance company to get our fence replaced after a wind storm. He also was great about making it a stronger, better fence while still making it conform to our HOAs rules. He also listened to what we wanted, explained what he was doing and why, and made modifications based on our requests without hassle.

He had originally come over to do estimate of my two fence gates. He ended up fixing them right on the spot. Set a post in concrete, replaced broken chewed up pieces of wood. Made them open and close better than they have the whole time we owned the house. Very impressed, would definitely use when we are ready to replace the whole fence.

Nate was fantastic to work with from the start. His communication was excellent, his price was very competitive, and he was willing to work around my schedule. Nate and his crew quickly built about 100' of fencing, using quality materials, cleaned up well afterward, and the end product looks great! He even came back later to do some extra work for me and got stung by a wasp, but finished the job anyway. I highly recommend NLJ construction for fence work.

Update August 2018 - called Jeff for another job on my property to run a privacy fence across the back of my lot, about 120'. The job got done in about 3 working days and looks great. Was exactly what I wanted. Dec 2015 Jeff was professional, prompt and knowledgeable. I had an idea of what I wanted but was not sure. Jeff's suggestions completed the picture. Then he got the job done a day earlier that I expected even though he had to clear 80' of the fence line. Outstanding job. Scott

I couldn’t be more pleased. Fixed my fence as promised, and it looks great. I was also so impressed with the care for my property. They had to work around a lot of landscape, and they did it without damaging anything, and that is not easy. Thank you!!!

Allan and his father built a gate for me and three feet of fence around the gate only to stabilize and have it attach to something I like the gate. Especially the front. (Please see photos ...front and back). They say...a picture speaks a thousand words

Nate was very responsive with our communications. He came the first time to the house and it was raining. He was patient with my questions and gave me some suggestions. His estimate was quick, honest and affordable. When we had confusion with the changes with the fencing. He came back to the house again to make sure everything is clear. My husband need a chain saw to cut a tree, and he offered their equipment. He made us a beautiful fence. The woods are evenly and perfectly cut. Nails are aligned well. Very flexible with time and informed me with any circumstances. Nate was not pushy and respectful with my decision. I highly recommend his expertise to anyone.

Nate and his team replaced our aged, falling apart old fence with a beautiful new one in three days. We're extremely happy with the quality of the new fence, and the overall performance of NLJ. Our soil is full of large rocks, making hand digging (vs the power auger) the only option for the new post holes. The crew handled it in stride and delivered the finished product on time. Nate even replaced an old gate on the fly for our neighbor. He shows genuine care in the quality of the work. Responsiveness is excellent (not easy to find in most contractors). Pricing was fair too. Really can't say enough positive things about them. We'll recommend NLJ to all our friends and neighbors.

Nate and crew showed up on-time, and completed the project in 3 days. This included tear down and removal of old fence, installation of 80' chain link, and over 90' of cedar, including 4 gates, horse panels and one really really cool gate! Wish we could upload a pic. Tina :)

Jeff did a great job mending our fence. We have a unique back yard, so the job was pretty complicated. He was quickly available, responsive, and thorough. We were out of town while the work was being completed, but Jeff stayed in contact, providing pictures of work completed (see before and after shots) and detailed receipts. Trustworthy and honest. Highly recommend!

This contractor did such a poor job on installing a gate to our fence. When he arrived he couldn't stop talking about how great he was that he was licensed and bonded. He told me that he does excellent work and was even critiquing the deck that we just had done. He was very unprofessional and was rather arrogant and even kept demanding water from me. I know its a hot day but he was very rude about it. He said that he had a dinner to go to later that evening but would be back the next day. The work was not finished and I was not happy. First of all, the gate was not what I wanted. I wanted something that had a decorative top that matched our fence or that actually looked like a fence with the dog ear top. He said he gave me an option of what I wanted. He gave me no option. In fact, the picture he showed me from Home Depot where he got the materials was the one with the dog ear top which I thought he was getting. When I said I didn't like it he acted offended. Secondly, he didn't even finish it. The sides had to be leveled because one side was leaning and there was a big gap right next to one of the ends. He wanted all the money up front for the gate. He charged us $300 for materials and $300 for labor. I told him that I absolutely would not pay him until the job was 100% complete. After that he got offended and he said "ma'am I am licencensed and bonded." After that I felt really uncomfortable with how he was talking to me so I went to grab my husband. My husband gave him the $300 for materials which now I believe we paid more for what he paid for it (he didn't show us the receipts). He agreed to come back the next day and to this day we still have not seen him, about a month later. He even texted me that night with a decorative topper that would match our fence. Since then, no word. He also didn't take the old wood which we now have to dump ourselves and the gate is left unfinished. See attached image below.

We needed to replace our entire rotting fence. We received our estimate on that Saturday and then on Tuesday they started working on it. This was our 3rd landscaping company that we got a quote for and they were by far the most reasonable that did not take advantage of you. It only took them 3 days to do it and worked with a crew of more than 5. The only issue was that there was a little bit of a language barrier and they didn't include our gate replacement in the estimate because they thought we wanted to keep the gate that we had. They did a beautiful job! We will definitely be contacting them again for our other landscaping needs that we will be needing after the winter time.

This review has been long overdue but even after half a year later I am still very impressed and thankful for having found Jeff. It was my first experience of using Thumbtack as the client and honestly didn't know what to expect. I appreciate the fact that some of the vendors came to see the project and gave me an honest quote. Jeff was professional, honest and made you feel comfortable during the whole process. I swear he never even took a break, he'd show up and in the middle of summer, took great care in removing our old fence and installing a new one. Additionally, we asked him to do a couple other repairs in our home and we are so thankful. Jeff, you are very much appreciated in the Ducay residence and wish you all the best in what you do. We'd give hime 10 STARS if we could!
