I hired Highland Tree Service and received an estimate on Monday - scheduled for Wednesday. Tree trimming for a 25ft Japanese Maple that was skimming the roof - and getting close to my neighbor. The tree was thinned beautifully and topped and looks wonderful! I cannot tell you how happy I am I hired Highland Tree Service. I don't know how many different tree services I have contacted in the past - either they did not respond at all - or they responded and then failed to show up after giving an estimate to failed to show up at all. You will not regret getting Highland Tree Service a go! Work was done in a timely fashion. Work area cleaned up and while I was not home - they did not need someone to oversee their work and tell them what to do at every point of the way. Color me very pleased that I hired them!

We hired Ernesto Duran to build a backyard retaining wall (from 3 quotes with other builders in the area). He built a beautiful, well crafted and high quality wall (see pictures) which was about 50 feet long and 36 inches high, turning an original 45 degree hill slope to an almost level foundation. He and his crew built the retaining wall in about 3 full days of work. We chose the Manorstone blocks (6" x 12" x 16") from Mutual Materials. In addition, Ernesto fully landscaped our backyard by removing the old grass and all of the weeds and replaced it with new grass and planted about 30 new plants as well as moving/replanting the existing bushes and trees. If you are looking to top quality, then Ernesto Duran is the Retaining wall/Landscaper" to hire. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Carlos did a wonderful job with the 3/4 removal of a tree located in a very tight spot between 2 city homes, whose branches also had grown into the power lines. This required a power drop and additional care and knowledge. He and his crew did the job for the price quoted, which was very reasonable, and left no branch behind! I was more than pleased with the work, will use Carlos Landscaping again, and will recommend him to anyone needing ANY type of lawn, land or tree care! :-)

Apples did a very credible job for us. The work involved sidewalk replacement. The price was quite reasonable. Pedro and his crew were timely, delivered as promised and quickly made arrangements for another contractor to grind tree roots, as that was necessary. Apples coordinated with the city inspectors and worked to their specifications and satisfaction.

The Cloudy Sky crew took down a 100 ft. maple tree that had branches hanging over a power line. They arrived on time, went right to work, and worked safely and efficiently all day long. The guys went above and beyond what was required and though it was the end of the day and I knew they were tired, asked if I wanted them to saw up some of the larger rounds. I am so glad I chose Cloudy Sky Tree Service to complete this work for me. One of the questions this website asks is what could have been better? My answer is that I could have given the neighbors a heads up that we were having a tree removed so they could plan for it, but as it was, CS even graciously moved their equipment a few times for my neighbors! Their service was fantastic!

Grays landscaping did a wonderful job with our yard. I wish I had before pictures, but before our yard was mostly dirt and we had a huge bottom deck on top of a falling apart concrete patio. Grays landscaping removed all the old concrete and bottom deck and our old grass. Placed in new soil and sod and added beautiful bark around our tree and around the trim of the yard. I love how it turned out and I look forward to doing business with them again.

Julio and his team did a great job of cleaning up my rock gardens and saving an apple tree from a neighboring bamboo plant. They aerated the soil and laid down compost prior to completing the job. Before they left they also cleaned up a couple of other areas on my property and made arrangements to come back to complete a task which they discovered while working and did not have the right tools for. They arrived on time and completed the job on time and completely cleaned up before they left. My yard looks fantastic and my apple tree is starting to show signs of recovery! I would not hesitate to hire them again. Great crew - a pleasure to do business with.

Working with George and his team at The Honest Arborist made the decision trim a series of tricky trees. Three things stood out for us with working with this company: 1) Their small size meant George was hands-on and friendly, with plenty of communication. 2) They were prompt and on time, and 3) They wanted to be sure we were happy before they packed up, cleaned-up and left. If you're looking for a tree trimmer, and since the trees we trimmed were on neighbors properties, and a person who communicates well and offers terrific value, call The Honest Arborist.

What a fantastic job, Dillon did with topping my 10 trees plus my bushes that blocked our view of the Puget Sound. Not only was he very professional in his work but extremely personal and very well knowledgable in his line of work! I love his enthusiasm and positive energy! I even recommended my neighbor to Dillon's company and he absolutely was impressed with his quality of work and professionalism. We will definitely use his company again in the future!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
